Steady Hall Magnetohydrodynamics Near a X-type Magnetic Neutral Line
Hall magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) properties near a two-dimensional (2D) X-type
magnetic neutral line in the steady state are considered via heuristic and
rigorous developments. Upon considering the steady-state as the asymptotic
limit of the corresponding \textit{time-dependent} problem and using a rigorous
development, Hall effects are shown to be able to sustain the hyperbolicity of
the magnetic field (and hence a more open X-point configuration) near the
neutral line in the steady state. The heuristic development misses this subtle
connection of the steady state with the corresponding \textit{time-dependent}
problem and predicts only an elongated current-sheet configuration (as in
resistive MHD). However, the heuristic development turns out to be useful in
providing insight into the lack of dependence of the reconnection rate on the
mechanism breaking the frozen-in condition of the magnetic field lines. The
latter result can be understood in terms of the ability of the ions and
electrons to transport equal amounts of magnetic flux per unit time out of the

Integrating Assertive Community Treatment and Illness Management and Recovery for Consumers with Severe Mental Illness
This study examined the integration of two evidence-based practices for adults with severe mental illness: Assertive community treatment (ACT) and illness management and recovery (IMR) with peer specialists as IMR practitioners. Two of four ACT teams were randomly assigned to implement IMR. Over 2 years, the ACT–IMR teams achieved moderate fidelity to the IMR model, but low penetration rates: 47 (25.7%) consumers participated in any IMR sessions and 7 (3.8%) completed the program during the study period. Overall, there were no differences in consumer outcomes at the ACT team level; however, consumers exposed to IMR showed reduced hospital use over time
Using digital and hand printing techniques to compensate for loss: re-establishing colour and texture in historic textiles
Conservators use a range of 'gap filling' techniques to improve the structural stability and presentation of objects. Textile conservators often use fabric supports to provide reinforcement for weak areas of a textile and to provide a visual infill in missing areas. The most common technique is to use dyed fabrics of a single colour but while a plain dyed support provides good reinforcement, it can be visually obtrusive when used with patterned or textured textiles. Two recent postgraduate dissertation projects at the Textile Conservation Centre (TCC) have experimented with hand printing and digital imaging techniques to alter the appearance of support fabrics so that they are less visually obtrusive and blend well with the colour and texture of the textile being supported. Case studies demonstrate the successful use of these techniques on a painted hessian rocking horse and a knitted glove from an archaeological context
The Role of Sulfur Dioxide in Stratospheric Aerosol Formation Evaluated by Using in situ Measurements in the Tropical Lower Stratosphere
Stratospheric aerosols (SAs) are a variable component of the Earth\u27s albedo that may be intentionally enhanced in the future to offset greenhouse gases (geoengineering). The role of tropospheric-sourced sulfur dioxide (SO2) in maintaining background SAs has been debated for decades without in situ measurements of SO2 at the tropical tropopause to inform this issue. Here we clarify the role of SO2 in maintaining SAs by using new in situ SO2 measurements to evaluate climate models and satellite retrievals. We then use the observed tropical tropopause SO2 mixing ratios to estimate the global flux of SO2 across the tropical tropopause. These analyses show that the tropopause background SO2 is about 5 times smaller than reported by the average satellite observations that have been used recently to test atmospheric models. This shifts the view of SO2 as a dominant source of SAs to a near-negligible one, possibly revealing a significant gap in the SA budget. ©2017. American Geophysical Union
Postseismic Deformation Following the 2015 M_w7.8 Gorkha (Nepal) Earthquake: New GPS Data, Kinematic and Dynamic Models, and the Roles of Afterslip and Viscoelastic Relaxation
We report Global Positioning System (GPS) measurements of postseismic deformation following the 2015 M_w7.8 Gorkha (Nepal) earthquake, including previously unpublished data from 13 continuous GPS stations installed in southern Tibet shortly after the earthquake. We use variational Bayesian Independent Component Analysis (vbICA) to extract the signal of postseismic deformation from the GPS time series, revealing a broad displacement field extending >150 km northward from the rupture. Kinematic inversions and dynamic forward models show that these displacements could have been produced solely by afterslip on the Main Himalayan Thrust (MHT) but would require a broad distribution of afterslip extending similarly far north. This would require the constitutive parameter (a − b)σ to decrease northward on the MHT to ≤0.05 MPa (an extreme sensitivity of creep rate to stress change) and seems unlikely in light of the low interseismic coupling and high midcrustal temperatures beneath southern Tibet. We conclude that the northward reach of postseismic deformation more likely results from distributed viscoelastic relaxation, possibly in a midcrustal shear zone extending northward from the seismogenic MHT. Assuming a shear zone 5–20 km thick, we estimate an effective shear‐zone viscosity of ~3·10¹⁶–3·10¹⁷ Pa·s over the first 1.12 postseismic years. Near‐field deformation can be more plausibly explained by afterslip itself and implies (a − b)σ ~ 0.5–1 MPa, consistent with other afterslip studies. This near‐field afterslip by itself would have re‐increased the Coulomb stress by ≥0.05 MPa over >30% of the Gorkha rupture zone in the first postseismic year, and deformation further north would have compounded this reloading
The Relationship Between Provider Competence, Content Exposure, and Consumer Outcomes in Illness Management and Recovery Programs
Provider competence may affect the impact of a practice. The current study examined this relationship in sixty-three providers engaging in Illness Management and Recovery with 236 consumers. Improving upon previous research, the present study utilized a psychometrically validated competence measure in the ratings of multiple Illness Management and Recovery sessions from community providers, and mapped outcomes onto the theory underlying the practice. Provider competence was positively associated with illness self-management and adaptive coping. Results also indicated baseline self-management skills and working alliance may affect the relationship between competence and outcomes
Organic nitrate and secondary organic aerosol yield from NO3 oxidation of ß-pinene evaluated using a gas-phase kinetics/aerosol partitioning model
The yields of organic nitrates and of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) particle formation were measured for the reaction NO3+beta-pinene under dry and humid conditions in the atmosphere simulation chamber SAPHIR at Research Center Julich. These experiments were conducted at low concentrations of NO3 (NO3+N2O5 < 10 ppb) and beta-pinene (peak similar to 15 ppb), with no seed aerosol. SOA formation was observed to be prompt and substantial (similar to 50% mass yield under both dry conditions and at 60% RH), and highly correlated with organic nitrate formation. The observed gas/aerosol partitioning of organic nitrates can be simulated using an absorptive partitioning model to derive an estimated vapor pressure of the condensing nitrate species of p(vap) similar to 5x10(-6) Torr (6.67x10(-4) Pa), which constrains speculation about the oxidation mechanism and chemical identity of the organic nitrate. Once formed the SOA in this system continues to evolve, resulting in measurable aerosol volume decrease with time. The observations of high aerosol yield from NOx-dependent oxidation of monoterpenes provide an example of a significant anthropogenic source of SOA from biogenic hydrocarbon precursors. Estimates of the NO3+beta-pinene SOA source strength for California and the globe indicate that NO3 reactions with monoterpenes are likely an important source (0.5-8% of the global total) of organic aerosol on regional and global scales
Fermi LAT Observations of the Supernova Remnant W28 (G6.4-0.1)
We present detailed analysis of the two gamma-ray sources,1FGL J1801.3-2322c
and 1FGL J1800.5-2359c,that have been found toward the supernova remnant(SNR)
W28 with the Large Area Telescope(LAT) on board the Fermi Gamma-ray Space
Telescope.1FGL J1801.3-2322c is found to be an extended source within the
boundary of SNR W28,and to extensively overlap with the TeV gamma-ray source
HESS J1801-233,which is associated with a dense molecular cloud interacting
with the supernova remnant.The gamma-ray spectrum measured with LAT from
0.2--100 GeV can be described by a broken power-law function with a break of
~1GeV,and photon indices of 2.090.08(stat)0.28(sys) below the break
and 2.740.06(stat)0.09(sys) above the break.Given the clear
association between HESS J1801-233 and the shocked molecular cloud and a
smoothly connected spectrum in the GeV--TeV band,we consider the origin of the
gamma-ray emission in both GeV and TeV ranges to be the interaction between
particles accelerated in the SNR and the molecular cloud.The decay of neutral
pions produced in interactions between accelerated hadrons and dense molecular
gas provide a reasonable explanation for the broadband gamma-ray spectrum. 1FGL
J1800.5-2359c, located outside the southern boundary of SNR W28, cannot be
resolved.An upper limit on the size of the gamma-ray emission was estimated to
be ~16 using events above ~2GeV under the assumption of a circular shape
with uniform surface brightness. It appears to coincide with the TeV source
HESS J1800-240B,which is considered to be associated with a dense molecular
cloud that contains the ultra compact HII region W28A2(G5.89-0.39).We found no
significant gamma-ray emission in the LAT energy band at the positions of TeV
sources HESS J1800-230A and HESS J1800-230C.The LAT data for HESS J1800-230A
combined with the TeV data points indicate a spectral break between 10GeV and
