Green space and child weight status : does outcome measurement matter? Evidence from an Australian longitudinal study

To examine whether neighbourhood green space is beneficially associated with (i) waist circumference (WC) and (ii) waist-to-height ratio (WtHR) across childhood. Methods. Gender-stratified multilevel linear regressions were used to examine associations between green space and objective measures of weight status in the Longitudinal Study of Australian Children, a nationally representative source of data on 4,423 children aged 6 y to 13 y. WC and WtHR were measured objectively. Percentage green space within the local area of residence was calculated. Effect modification by age was explored, adjusting for socioeconomic confounding. Results. Compared to peers with 0-5% green space locally, boys and girls with >40% green space tended to have lower WC (βboys -1.15, 95% CI -2.44, 0.14; βgirls -0.21, 95% CI -1.47, 1.05) and WtHR (βboys -0.82, 95% CI -1.65, 0.01; βgirls -0.32, 95% CI -1.13, 0.49). Associations among boys were contingent upon age (p valuesage green space40% green space at 73.85 cm and 45.75% compared to those with 0-5% green space at 75.18 cm and 46.62%, respectively. Conclusions. Greener neighbourhoods appear beneficial to alternative child weight status measures, particularly among boys.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe
Broccoli or Sulforaphane:Is It the Source or Dose That Matters?
There is robust epidemiological evidence for the beneficial effects of broccoli consumption on health, many of them clearly mediated by the isothiocyanate sulforaphane. Present in the plant as its precursor, glucoraphanin, sulforaphane is formed through the actions of myrosinase, a β-thioglucosidase present in either the plant tissue or the mammalian microbiome. Since first isolated from broccoli and demonstrated to have cancer chemoprotective properties in rats in the early 1990s, over 3000 publications have described its efficacy in rodent disease models, underlying mechanisms of action or, to date, over 50 clinical trials examining pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics and disease mitigation. This review evaluates the current state of knowledge regarding the relationships between formulation (e.g., plants, sprouts, beverages, supplements), bioavailability and efficacy, and the doses of glucoraphanin and/or sulforaphane that have been used in pre-clinical and clinical studies. We pay special attention to the challenges for better integration of animal model and clinical studies, particularly with regard to selection of dose and route of administration. More effort is required to elucidate underlying mechanisms of action and to develop and validate biomarkers of pharmacodynamic action in humans. A sobering lesson is that changes in approach will be required to implement a public health paradigm for dispensing benefit across all spectrums of the global population
FORMULATING ENVIRONMENTAL AND SOCIAL INDICATORS FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT. ESRI Policy Research Series, 1996
The programme of the present government includes a commitment to "working
towards a new set of indicators of sustainable economic development which will
take account of environmental as well as social factors". The central concern is to
go beyond existing measures of economic activity produced within the national
accounting framework (such as GDP or national income) in order to develop a
more complete picture of economic and social progress in Ireland. The present
publication provides an overview of the issues and options which arise in
connection with this commitment, and suggests steps which might be taken in
pursuing it.
The publication is set out in two largely separate essays, one dealing with
environmental indicators, the other with social indicators. While it would be
desirable to deal with those two topics together, the differences in the intellectual
and institutional traditions from which they have developed are such that an
integrated approach has not yet emerged. In the final section of the present
summary, the recommendations emerging from the two essays are brought
together, though they are presented separately in the body of the report
Bicycle Handlebar Width Does Not Affect Spirometry, Ventilation, or Gas Exchange
Bicycle fit may affect comfort, aerodynamics, efficiency, ventilation, and power generation. Handlebars determine how the rider interacts with the bicycle. A wide range of handlebar widths are commercially available, but it is unclear if the resultant position affects lung function, ventilation, gas exchange, or efficiency. PURPOSE We aimed to measure the effects of handlebar widths on ventilation, gas exchange, spirometry, and comfort during moderate constant power exercise. METHODS Twenty-four recreationally active adults completed the study (32 ± 5 yrs., 175 ± 9 cm, 74 ± 12 kg, 8 women, 16 men). Participants completed three moderate constant power bouts of exercise on a cycle ergometer (Lode Excalibur PFM) while using handlebars set equivalent to, or ± 4cm in width to the participant shoulder width. We used a one-way RMANOVA to compare the three handlebar widths. RESULTS There was no difference in gas exchange and ventilation between the three handlebar widths: V̇O2 (F[2, 23] = 0.99, p = 0.38), V̇CO2 (F[1.47, 23] = 0.39, p = 0.62), V̇E (F[2, 23] = 0.53, p = 0.59], VT (F[2, 23] = 0.44, p = 0.65], fBr (F[2, 23] = 0.17, p = 0.84], PetO2(F[2, 23] = 0.45, p = 0.64), PetCO2 (F[2, 23] = 0.25, p=0.78]. Similarly, there were no differences in inspiratory capacity during the bout (F[1.49, 22] = 1.34, p = 0.27) or any spirometry variables immediately following exercise: FVC (F[1.43, 22] = 0.88, p = 0.39], FEV1 (F[2, 22] = 0.30, p = 0.74], FEV1/FVC (F[2, 22] = 0.18, p = 0.84], PEF (F[2, 22] = 0.14, p = 0.87]. There was no difference in the overall comfort (F[2, 23] = 0.90, p = 0.41] or shoulder discomfort (F [2, 23] = 0.90, p = 0.42). CONCLUSIONS Bicycle handlebar widths within 4 cm shoulder width do not result in changes to ventilation, gas exchange, efficiency, spirometry, or comfort during moderate power cycling exercise. Within the limits of rider preference, comfort, and safety, handlebar width can be adjusted substantially for aerodynamic purposes without affecting rider physiology

Effects of Training Intensity on Locomotor Performance in Individuals With Chronic Spinal Cord Injury: A Randomized Crossover Study
Background. Many physical interventions can improve locomotor function in individuals with motor incomplete spinal cord injury (iSCI), although the training parameters that maximize recovery are not clear. Previous studies in individuals with other neurologic injuries suggest the intensity of locomotor training (LT) may positively influence walking outcomes. However, the effects of intensity during training of individuals with iSCI have not been tested. Objective. The purpose of this pilot, blinded-assessor randomized trial was to evaluate the effects of LT intensity on walking outcomes in individuals with iSCI. Methods. Using a crossover design, ambulatory participants with iSCI \u3e1 year duration performed either high- or low-intensity LT for ≤20 sessions over 4 to 6 weeks. Four weeks following completion, the training interventions were alternated. Targeted intensities focused on achieving specific ranges of heart rate (HR) or ratings of perceived exertion (RPE), with intensity manipulated by increasing speeds or applying loads. Results. Significantly greater increases in peak treadmill speeds (0.18 vs 0.02 m/s) and secondary measures of metabolic function and overground speed were observed following high- versus low-intensity training, with no effects of intervention order. Moderate to high correlations were observed between differences in walking speed or distances and differences in HRs or RPEs during high- versus low-intensity training. Conclusion. This pilot study provides the first evidence that the intensity of stepping practice may be an important determinant of LT outcomes in individuals with iSCI. Whether such training is feasible in larger patient populations and contributes to improved locomotor outcomes deserves further consideration
