The book minutely depicts the territorial organization of religions and confessions in the Crown part of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in the second half of the eighteenth century. It focuses on the spatial range and variety of the communities in the region, which was a melting pot of many different religions, confessions and denominations. The picture the book paints owes its depth and detail both to the characterization of the borderlands, and to the heterogeneous and homogeneous zones. Prof. Michael Müller: "The book represents a methodologically most innovative, and empirically very rich, contribution to at least three fields of study: historical geography, religious history and historical demography. For the first time, we get a full, and reliable, picture of the churches of all Christian denominations and of the synagogues (and of the religious institutions and organizations behind them) that existed in the lands of the Crown prior to the first partition of Poland.

One-degree-of-freedom motion induced by modeled vortex shedding

The motion of an elastically supported cylinder forced by a nonlinear, quasi-static, aerodynamic model with the unusual feature of a motion-dependent forcing frequency was studied. Numerical solutions for the motion and the Lyapunov exponents are presented for three forcing amplitudes and two frequencies (1.0 and 1.1 times the Strouhal frequency). Initially, positive Lyapunov exponents occur and the motion can appear chaotic. After thousands of characteristic times, the motion changes to a motion (verified analytically) that is periodic and damped. This periodic, damped motion was not observed experimentally, thus raising questions concerning the modeling

Profesor Stanisław Litak (1932-2010) – przyczynek do biografii naukowo-dydaktycznej

The scientific and didactic portrait of Professor Stanisław Litak includes a considerable area of research on the social and religious history of the modern era carried out during the many years of work at the Catholic University of Lublin in the years 1961–2005. In the period of his professional activity, Professor Litak co-created the Lublin environment of researchers dealing with the structures of the modern Church and historical geography and he represented it on the international forum. A parallel role in his scientific interests was played by the history of education of the pre-partitioning period. The fruit of those interests was a popular academic textbook written by him about the history of education and still used by students concerned with the issues referring to the history of education. The duality of research work is also reflected in the circumstances in which Professor Litak was employed both at the Institute of History and the Institute of Pedagogy of the Catholic University of Lublin. The aftermath of his work includes numerous scientific publications written within the convention of the adopted scientific research directions. The Professor’s legacy in the form of human capital, namely students from the seminar, scientific students and colleagues who undertake the effort to continue the research directions established by him, remains invaluable. Professor Litak established standards in research work which deserve to be followed. He was also known as a warm, modest but demanding university teacher and head of teams. What should be emphasized and appreciated are his merits for the Polish humanities, which are due to the value of his works, constituting a permanent element of historiography. Memory about him as a man of science who epitomized research values and maintained good human relationships also deserves to be kept alive in academic circles.Sylwetka naukowo-dydaktyczna prof. Stanisława Litaka obejmuje znaczący obszar badań nad historią społeczno-religijną epoki nowożytnej, realizowaną w trakcie wieloletniej pracy zawodowej na Katolickim Uniwersytecie Lubelskim w latach 1961–2005. W trakcie aktywności zawodowej prof. Litak współtworzył lubelskie środowisko badaczy struktur Kościoła nowożytnego i geografii historycznej oraz reprezentował je na forum międzynarodowym. Równorzędną rolę w Jego naukowych zainteresowaniach pełniła historia oświaty epoki przedrozbiorowej, która zaowocowała autorstwem popularnego podręcznika akademickiego o historii wychowania, wykorzystywanego do dziś przez studentów zainteresowanych zagadnieniami historii edukacji. Dualizm pracy naukowej odzwierciedlają również okoliczności zatrudnienia prof. Litaka zarówno w Instytucie Historii oraz w Instytucie Pedagogiki KUL. Pokłosiem lat pracy są liczne publikacje naukowe, utrzymane w konwencji przyjętych kierunków badawczych. Nieoceniona pozostaje też spuścizna Profesora w postaci kapitału ludzkiego – seminarzystów, uczniów naukowych, współpracowników, którzy podejmują trud kontynuacji obranych przez Niego kierunków badawczych. Profesor Litak wyznaczył standardy w pracy naukowej, które pozostają godne naśladowania, dał się również poznać jako ciepły, skromny, ale wymagający nauczyciel akademicki i kierownik zespołów pracowniczych. Warto podkreślić i docenić Jego zasługi dla humanistyki polskiej, ze względu na wartość merytoryczną prac, które na stałe weszły do historiografii. Pamięć o Nim, jako o człowieku nauki, który niósł ze sobą wartości badawcze i utrzymywał dobre relacje międzyludzkie, zasługuje również na propagowanie w środowiskach akademickich

Rozwój struktur parafialnych i dekanalnych metropolii mohylewskiej (1783–1918)

The article presents, in chronological order, a geographic-historical analysis of the development of parish structures in the Mogilev metropolis in 1783–1918. The analysis has been based on two primary sources: the annual diocesan handbooks called Schematisms and registers of the clergy. The changes in the network of parishes are presented within the territorial administrative units of the higher level: deaneries and dioceses (of Mogilev, Vilnius, Samogitian diocese, and the dioceses of Lutsk and Zhytomyr, Kamianets-Podilskyi, Minsk, and Tiraspol). The paper attempts to interpret these changes by establishing their causes and circumstances.Artykuł w układzie chronologicznym przedstawia analizę geograficzno-historyczną rozwoju struktur parafialnych w metropolii mohylewskiej w latach 1783–1918. Główną podstawę źródłową stanowią schematyzmy diecezjalne oraz spisy duchowieństwa. Zmiany sieci parafialnej zostały ukazane w ramach jednostek administracyjnych wyższego rzędu: dekanatów oraz diecezji (mohylewskiej, wileńskiej, żmudzkiej, łucko-żytomierskiej, kamienieckiej, mińskiej, tyraspolskiej). Struktury religijne na przykładzie „Atlasu wyznań i religii w Rzeczypospolitej w drugiej połowie XVIII w.”

The present article deals with harmonization of selected geographical and historical information on territorial structures of religions and denominations in the 18th century Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and their cartographical presentation. It refers to two categories constituting the content of the map, namely churches and units of territorial administration of particular religions. The Author focuses on problems concerning interpretation of written and cartographic sources as well as the methods of transferring those interpretations onto the cartographic form, which requires precision and accuracy. He indicates the criteria for the qualification of sacral places (in the formal and functional-architectural aspects) which detertheir inclusion in “Atlas of Religions and Confessions in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in the 2nd Half of the 18th Century” Referring to the tradition of the existing cartographic forms, the Author discusses the categories of sacral places and the methods of presenting them in the main map in the scale 1:300 000. In the case of borders, the Author focused attention on the problem of harmonization of territorial structures of the Latin, Lutheran and Jewish denominations. The conclusion emphasizes the necessity for generalization and simplification of the presented phenomena which the recipient of cartographic presentations should be aware of. At the same time, the Author indicated a need for reliable information to be reflected in a content-related commentary and an index including the source basis and all kinds of remarks concerning the map

Inwentarz księgozbiorów parafialnych z drugiej połowy XVIII wieku – nowa metoda edycji

Gathering information on library collections is of primary importance in research on the intellectual culture of past times. Studying the church book collections, including the parish ones, is especially significant as the basis of analyzing the intellectual state of the clergy environment in the period before the partitions. The canon of research frameworks includes the analyses of both selected individual book collections and larger resources within selected temporal and geographical spaces. An overall analysis of the subject still remains an open matter because of a lack of technical solutions which would allow a quantitative and qualitative analysis of abundant library resources. The problem is solved by a proposal of developing and making available the computer data base as a tool supporting the preparation of inventories and catalogues of the source material as well as making them accessible. Computer solutions also enable spatial visualization, which additionally enhances the effect of the new form of edition for library inventories

Religie i wyznania w Atlasie historycznym Polski XVI wieku

The article characterises the content pertaining to religious structures and their presentation methods in the Historical Atlas of Poland (AHP) programme. It identifies the causes and describes the circumstances of changes in the depiction of religious topics at various phases of the project. It also presents the paths of the AHP development, shaped by discussions around the role of historical cartography and socio-religious history, which influenced how religious issues were treated in the AHP programme and publishing series.Artykuł zawiera charakterystykę treści dotyczących struktur religijnych oraz metod ich prezentacji w programie „Atlasu historycznego Polski”. Identyfikuje przyczyny oraz opisuje okoliczności zmian w ujmowaniu tematyki wyznaniowej w poszczególnych fazach rozwoju projektu atlasowego. Ukazuje różne ścieżki rozwojowe AHP, kształtowane przez dyskusje wokół roli kartografii historycznej oraz historii społeczno-religijnej, które wpływały na sposób ujęcia problemów religijnych w programie i serii wydawniczej AHP

Harcerska służba dziecku w latach 1939–1944 w Lublinie

The article presents the work of Girl Scouts in aid of children in Lublin in the years 1939–1944. Caring for children was one of the scouting commitments which stemmed from the organization’s mission, understood as helping others, especially in the face of war. Taking up the topic of scouting service in children’s aid helps to draw attention to the aspect of supporting the civilians by the scouting community, which remained mostly in the shadow of more spectacular military service and was important for the protection of the life, health and psyche of the youngest victims of war. The analysis of the problem was based on the accounts of Lublin Girl Scouts, written down for the purpose of preserving the memory of the war events. The memoirs deposited in the KUL Library become a part-ly-modified elements of the studies on history of Lublin’s female scouts. After verifying the content of the printed messages with the unpublished version, the article recreates in a problem-chronological arrangement the participation of Girl Scouts in childcare in the years 1939–1944 in the form of interim, institutional and commemorative help. In the obtained image of scouting service for children, both a scheme of planned actions in case of war, as well as a number of unique solutions caused by the needs of the moment were identified. These are testimo-ny to the scouts’ dedication, which can inspire the continuation of the scouting spirit to face the challenges of the present day.Artykuł prezentuje pracę harcerek na rzecz pomocy dzieciom w Lublinie w latach 1939–1944. Troska o dzieci stanowiła jedno ze zobowiązań harcerskich wynikających z misji tej organizacji rozumianej jako pomoc bliźnim, szczególnie akcentowanej w czasie wojny. Podjęcie tematu służby dziecku sprzyja zwróceniu uwagi na ten aspekt wsparcia ludności cywilnej przez środowisko harcerskie, który pozostawał przeważnie w cieniu bardziej spektakularnej służby wojskowej, a był istotny z punktu widzenia ochrony życia, zdrowia i psychiki najmłodszych ofiar wojny. Analiza problemu oparta została na relacjach lubelskich harcerek, spisywanych na potrzeby zachowania pamięci o wojennych wydarzeniach. Materiały wspomnieniowe zdeponowane w Bibliotece KUL weszły w częściowo zmodyfikowanej formie do opracowań historii lubelskiego harcerstwa żeńskiego. Po zweryfikowaniu zawartości przekazów drukowanych i porównaniu z wersjami nieopublikowanymi, w artykule odtworzono w układzie problemowo-chronologicznym udział harcerek w opiece nad dzieckiem w latach 1939–1944 w formie pomocy doraźnej, instytucjonalnej oraz okolicznościowej. W uzyskanym obrazie harcerskiej służby dziecku zarysował się zarówno schemat planowanych na wypadek wojny działań, jak i szereg unikatowych rozwiązań spowodowanych potrzebą chwili. Są one świadectwem pełnej poświęcenia postawy harcerek, które może stanowić inspirację do kontynuowania ducha wychowania harcerskiego, wciąż aktualnego w obliczu wyzwań współczesności
