Location assessment, relocation and firm performance

Most studies on firm relocation focus on firms that did relocate. The reasons why they moved and why they settled somewhere else, are always seen as the location factors. The assumption behind this is that firms which did relocate assessed their former location unfavourable compared to their production requirements, while firms that did not relocate were more favourable to their location. By means of longitudinal panel survey data on firms in the Netherlands we investigate whether this assumption is valid. First we focus on the location assessment and investigate which location factors are most important in the overall assessment. Next we analyse changes of the location assessment over time. Secondly we analyse stated and revealed relocations in relation to the locations assessment and firm performance (measured in the level of employment). This paper concludes with a discussion on the notion of location factors. Particularly we will focus on their role in the relocation decision process which basically is a matching process between spatial production requirements put forward by firms and locational properties and characteristics of productions site

The research aims to discover the impact of personal auditor’s characteristics, including employee’s performance, auditor burnout, professional commitment, turnover intention, selfesteem, locus of control, towards dysfunctional audit behavior acceptance, and its impact on the quality of audit through dysfunctional audit behavior. The technique employed in this research was purposive sampling with 121 auditors at BPKP Province of Papua representative office and Papua Inspectorate Office as the size of the sample. However, there were only 94 used. Structural Equation Model (SEM) with Partial Least Square (PLS) WrapPLS 6.0 method was also used as technical analysis to test the variable’s impact. The research found that employee performance and self-esteem have no impact on the dysfunctional audit behavior, however auditor burnout, professional commitment, and external locus of control have significant and positive impacts on the dysfunctional audit behavior. Auditor burnout, turnover intention, and external locus of control have no impact on the quality of the audit, however, the employee’s performance, professional commitment, and self-esteem do have a significant and positive impact on the quality of audit. All auditor’s characteristics have no impact on the quality of audit through dysfunctional audit behavior acceptance, another word, the dysfunctional audit behavior acceptance is not necessarily the intervening variable between auditor’s personal characteristic towards the quality of audit

Ageing in a Long-term Regeneration Neighbourhood: A Disruptive Experience or Successful Ageing in Place?

The aging population of European cities raises enormous challenges with regard to employment, pensions, health care and other age-related services. The housing preferences of the aging population are changing rapidly where more and more people want to live independent lives for as long as possible. At the same time governments need to reduce the costs of expensive institutionalized care. A precondition for 'ageing in place' is that elderly people perceive their neighbourhoods as familiar and safe places. In the Netherlands, many neighbourhoods with a rapidly ageing population have been subject to urban regeneration policies. Hence, an important question is to what extent these policies affect the housing situation, social support networks and socioeconomic position of elderly people, because these factors strongly assist the ability of elderly people to live independently. We answer this question through the analysis of a small but unique panel data set with 2007 and 2012 measurements from Hoogvliet, a district of Rotterdam. Contrary to claims about large, disrupting impacts of urban regeneration, the results show that even in times of economic crisis regeneration in Hoogvliet has enabled 'ageing in place'. There appears no relationship between the Hoogvliet policies and changes in income of elderly people and their ability to get by financially. Those who have moved home often report regeneration benefits, mostly related to accessing better quality housing in the same area. Finally, we found no clear evidence of decreased social support or increased loneliness through regeneration-induced disruption of social networks

The Measurement and Analysis of Housing Preference and Choice

What are the current trends in housing? Is my planned project commercially viable? What should be my marketing and advertisement strategies? These are just some of the questions real estate agents, landlords and developers ask researchers to answer. But to find the answers, researchers are faced with a wide variety of methods that measure housing preferences and choices. To select and value a valid research method, one needs a well-structured overview of the methods that are used in housing preference and housing choice research. This comprehensive introduction to this field offers just such an overview. It discusses and compares numerous methods, detailing the potential limitation of each one, and it reaches beyond methodology, illustrating how thoughtful consideration of methods and techniques in research can help researchers and other professionals to deliver products and services that are more in line with residents’ needs

Living in a Dangerous World: The Shaping of Behavioral Profile by Early Environment and 5-HTT Genotype

Anxiety and anxiety disorders are influenced by both, environmental and genetic factors. One genetic factor under scrutiny for anxiety disorders is the genetically encoded variation of the serotonin transporter (5-HTT). The aim of this study was to elucidate the effects of a threatening environment during early phases of life on anxiety-like (ANX) and exploratory behavior (EXP) in adult mice, varying in serotonin transporter (5-HTT) genotype. For this purpose, pregnant and lactating 5-HTT +/− dams were repeatedly exposed to olfactory cues of unfamiliar adult males by introducing small amounts of soiled bedding to their home cage. These stimuli signal the danger of infanticide and simulate a threatening environment. Control females were treated with neutral bedding. The offspring (5-HTT +/+, +/−, −/−) were examined for their ANX and EXP. The main results were: (1) a main effect of genotype existed, with 5-HTT −/− showing higher levels of ANX and lower levels of EXP than 5-HTT +/− and wildtypes. (2) When mothers had lived in a threatening environment, their offspring showed increased ANX and reduced EXP compared to controls. (3) These effects were most pronounced in 5-HTT −/− mice. By applying a new ecologically relevant paradigm we conclude: If 5-HTT +/− mothers live in a threatening environment during pregnancy and lactation, their offspring behavioral profile will, in principle, be shaped in an adaptive way preparing the young for an adverse environment. This process is, however, modulated by 5-HTT genotype, bearing the risk that individuals with impaired serotonergic neurotransmission (5-HTT −/−) will develop an exaggerated, potentially pathological level of anxiety from gene × environment interactions

Within organic agriculture it is difficult to provide all components necessary for poultry feeding. Sprouts of cereals with valuable composition could possibly compensate for this shortage. For that, it is necessary to analyze the content, the composition and the properties of sprouts from different varieties of cereals during germination. In order to produce a high-quality feed for poultry criteria for an optimal process of germination and a consistently good quality have to be defined

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Lumefantrine (benflumetol) is a fluorene derivative belonging to the aryl amino alcohol class of anti-malarial drugs and is commercially available in fixed combination products with β-artemether. Impurity characterization of such drugs, which are widely consumed in tropical countries for malaria control programmes, is of paramount importance. However, until now, no exhaustive impurity profile of lumefantrine has been established, encompassing process-related and degradation impurities in active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and finished pharmaceutical products (FPPs).</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Using HPLC-DAD/UV-ESI/ion trap/MS, a comprehensive impurity profile was established based upon analysis of market samples as well as stress, accelerated and long-term stability results. <it>In-silico </it>toxicological predictions for these lumefantrine related impurities were made using Toxtree® and Derek®.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Several new impurities are identified, of which the desbenzylketo derivative (DBK) is proposed as a new specified degradant. DBK and the remaining unspecified lumefantrine related impurities are predicted, using Toxtree® and Derek®, to have a toxicity risk comparable to the toxicity risk of the API lumefantrine itself.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>From unstressed, stressed and accelerated stability samples of lumefantrine API and FPPs, nine compounds were detected and characterized to be lumefantrine related impurities. One new lumefantrine related compound, DBK, was identified and characterized as a specified degradation impurity of lumefantrine in real market samples (FPPs). The <it>in-silico </it>toxicological investigation (Toxtree® and Derek®) indicated overall a toxicity risk for lumefantrine related impurities comparable to that of the API lumefantrine itself.</p
