The discovery space of ELT-ANDES. Stars and stellar populations

The ArmazoNes high Dispersion Echelle Spectrograph (ANDES) is the optical and near-infrared high-resolution echelle spectrograph envisioned for the European Extremely Large Telescope (ELT). We present a selection of science cases, supported by new calculations and simulations, where ANDES could enable major advances in the fields of stars and stellar populations. We focus on three key areas, including the physics of stellar atmospheres, structure, and evolution; stars of the Milky Way, Local Group, and beyond; and the star-planet connection. The key features of ANDES are its wide wavelength coverage at high spectral resolution and its access to the large collecting area of the ELT. These features position ANDES to address the most compelling and potentially transformative science questions in stellar astrophysics of the decades ahead, including questions which cannot be anticipated today.Comment: 46 pages, 8 figures; submitted to Experimental Astronomy on behalf of the ANDES Science Tea

Managerial Power, Stock-Based Compensation, and Firm Performance: Theory and Evidence

We study theoretically and empirically the relation among CEO power, CEO pay and firm performance. Our theoretical model follows the rent extraction view of CEO compensation put forward by the managerial power theory. We test our theoretical findings using the sample of S&P1500 firms. The predicted relation between power and pay is largely supported. However, the relation between power and firm performance has mixed support, suggesting that, while the managerial power theory has relevance in explaining the relation between power and pay, the scope of power needs to be broadened for better understanding of how managerial power affects firm performance

Creating a Sustainable Business Model for Open-Source Trishaw Designs

Cycling Without Age (CWA), a non-profit organization with the goal of aiding the elderly, sells and distributes trishaws to their community and customers/chapters. Trishaws are cycles with a carriage in the front for passengers to sit. A challenge to CWA is that trishaws are not affordable in the Global South. A sustainable, open-source business model and a test of that business model were created to help CWA address this problem. These outline how CWA locations can choose available trishaw designs to build locally through different open-source options, based on the resources available to them

Sources of COVID-19 Vaccine Promotion for Pregnant and Lactating Women in Bangladesh

COVID-19 vaccines are an effective public health intervention to reduce COVID-19-related morbidity and mortality. Given that pregnant and lactating women have a higher risk of severe COVID-19 complications, it is paramount to understand the factors that inform vaccine decision-making among this population. In this study, we sought to identify facilitators and barriers to COVID-19 vaccine acceptance and vaccine promotion in pregnant and lactating women in Bangladesh. We conducted 40 in-depth interviews with 12 pregnant women, 12 lactating women, and 16 health workers from one urban and four rural communities in Bangladesh. We used a grounded theory approach to identify emerging themes. Our results suggest that health workers and religious leaders played key roles in promoting COVID-19 vaccines in this population. Further, we found that the culture of trust in public health authorities and the existing vaccine infrastructure facilitated vaccine promotion. However, changes in vaccine eligibility and myths and rumors acted as both facilitators and barriers to vaccine promotion within our study. It is crucial that maternal immunization vaccine promotion efforts push pregnant and lactating women toward vaccine acceptance to protect the health of mothers and their babies. Additionally, as new maternal vaccines are developed and licensed, understanding how to best promote vaccines within this group is paramount
