Chemically modified polysulfones for molecular imprinting. Synthesis and complexation with a fluorescent model template

    Get PDF
Polysulfone (PSU) was chemically modified to prepare new molecular imprinted membranes (MIMs). Several amounts of amine and sulfonyl groups were introduced into the PSU chemical structure in order to create interactions with acid or base templates, such as biomolecules or biomacromolecules. A fluorescent dye, Acridine Orange base (AO), was used as a model template and its complexation with the prepared PSUs was monitored by spectroscopic techniques. This study showed an absence of complexation with the native PSU and a strong complexation with the aminated and the sulfonated PSUs. Partially allylated PSU bearing amine or sulfonyl groups were also synthesized. These compounds are expected to be used as precursors for designing new crosslinked molecular imprinting membranes (MIMs), exhibiting high stability of the template memory

Comorbid Depression Among Untreated Illicit Opiate Users : Results From a Multisite Canadian Study

    Get PDF
This study aimed to describe patterns of major depression (MDD) in a cohort of untreated illicit opiate users recruited from 5 Canadian urban centres, identify sociodemographic characteristics of opiate users that predict MDD, and determine whether opiate users suffering from depression exhibit different drug use patterns than do participants without depression. Baseline data were collected from 679 untreated opiate users in Vancouver, Edmonton, Toronto, Montreal, and Quebec City. Using the Composite International Diagnostic Interview Short Form for Major Depression, we assessed sociodemographics, drug use, health status, health service use, and depression. We examined depression rates across study sites; logistic regression analyses predicted MDD from demographic information and city. Chi-square analyses were used to compare injection drug use and cocaine or crack use among participants with and without depression. Almost one-half (49.3%) of the sample met the cut-off score for MDD. Being female, white, and living outside Vancouver independently predicted MDD. Opiate users suffering from depression were more likely than users without depression to share injection equipment and paraphernalia and were also more likely to use cocaine (Ps < 0.05). Comorbid depression is common among untreated opiate users across Canada; targeted interventions are needed for this population

Assessment of Exposure to Ochratoxin -A (OTA) through Ground Roasted Coffee in two Cameroonian Cities: Yaounde and Douala

Abstract Occurrence of ochrato xin A (OTA) in ground roasted coffee fro m d ifferent brands and types available in Yaounde and Douala cities was assessed. Based on these data, exposure of the Cameroonian population to OTA through coffee consumption was estimated. Coffee samples were purchased in hypermarkets and supermarkets of the two selected cities of Cameroon. OTA was extracted, cleaned-up by immunoaffin ity columns, and detected by HPLC-fluorescence detection. OTA was found in 64.7% of pure Arab ica coffee, 75% of pure Robusta coffee, and 62% of Arab ica / Robusta mixtu re coffee, with OTA levels ranging fro m 0.3 to 4.9 µg.kg -1 , 0.6 to 18 µg.kg -1 and 0.3 to 7.4 µg.kg -1 respectively. Robusta Coffee brands are the most contaminated, follo w by coffee mixture brands and Arabica coffee brands. The daily intake of OTA is 0.065 ng / kg bw per day. Consumption of OTA fro m coffee in the cities of Douala and Yaoundé are then very lo w compared to that of Europe who is 2-3 ng/kg bw per day. Consumption of OTA fro m coffee in the cities of Douala and Yaounde is very low co mpared to that of Europe, for wh ich the rate is 2-3 ng/kg bw per day
