    Comparing Change Management Processes for Requirements and Manufacturing: An Interview Based Study

    This study compares requirement and manufacturing change management processes to determine the processes in use and if similar processes can be used for both types of changes. A literature review is used to identify prescribed process stages. Ten stages are identified for both requirements and manufacturing change management. A series of interviews are then conducted with four different population groups to determine the process stages actually used in the field. The resulting requirement and manufacturing change process models are compared with the process models from the literature and with each other. Further, a thematic analysis is performed on the interview findings. Ultimately, differences are found between the prescribed and practiced change management models for both types of changes. Formal documentation stages are more prevalent for the manufacturing domain, though documentation in practice is less than what is prescribed. This includes the issuance of change requests and change orders in manufacturing change management that are not present in requirement change management processes. Significant differences were also found between the two change types; namely, requirement changes deal with more abstract concepts and as such can afford more informal documentation, whereas manufacturing changes deal with existing artifacts and require solid documentation. Additional research thrusts are identified to help reconcile change management processes across the life cycle

    Campus Community Health Assessments Using Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring

    Background and Purpose: Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM), frequently used by bio-anthropologists as a research tool, provides a detailed assessment of daily blood pressure variation in response to activity and mood. The purpose of this study was to explore associations between ADLs, blood pressure, and health risk behaviors, including nicotine, using ABPM. This study was guided by Pender’s Health Promotion Model. Methods: This cross-sectional descriptive study with a case control group and convenience sample used survey methodology and biometric data collection. Data were analyzed using SPSS 25 and statistical tests appropriate to each research hypothesis. Results: University campus members (N=61) were recruited. Researchers referred 23.8% (N = 15) to primary care providers (PCP) for assessment and treatment of blood pressure. Of these, 47% (N = 7) were nicotine users; 53% (N = 8) were non-users. 3% of nicotine users (N = 2) asked for nicotine replacement therapy and referral to employee assistance. Conclusions & Implications: Sample demographics suggest that nicotine, especially vaping, is more prevalent among college students than staff. Many participants required referral to PCP, indicating an unmet need for cardiovascular health screenings. This warrants further study to determine causal factors and the role of campus health in its solution.https://orb.binghamton.edu/research_days_posters_spring2020/1057/thumbnail.jp

    Benefits of group foraging depend on prey type in a small marine predator, the Little Penguin

    Group foraging provides predators with advantages in over-powering prey larger than themselves or in aggregating small prey for efficient exploitation. For group-living predatory species, cooperative hunting strategies provide inclusive fitness benefits. However, for colonial-breeding predators, the benefit pay-offs of group foraging are less clear due to the potential for intra-specific competition. We used animal-borne cameras to determine the prey types, hunting strategies, and success of little penguins (Eudyptula minor), a small, colonial breeding air-breathing marine predator that has recently been shown to display extensive at-sea foraging associations with conspecifics. Regardless of prey type, little penguins had a higher probability of associating with conspecifics when hunting prey that were aggregated than when prey were solitary. In addition, success was greater when individuals hunted schooling rather than solitary prey. Surprisingly, however, success on schooling prey was similar or greater when individuals hunted on their own than when with conspecifics. These findings suggest individuals may be trading-off the energetic gains of solitary hunting for an increased probability of detecting prey within a spatially and temporally variable prey field by associating with conspecifics

    Departure time influences foraging associations in little penguins

    Recent studies have documented that little penguins (Eudyptula minor) associate at sea, displaying synchronised diving behaviour throughout a foraging trip. However, previous observations were limited to a single foraging trip where only a small number of individuals were simultaneously tracked. Consequently, it is not known whether coordinated behaviour is consistent over time, or what factors influence it. In the present study, breeding adults were concurrently instrumented with GPS and dive behaviour data loggers for at least 2 consecutive foraging trips during guard and post-guard stage at two breeding colonies (London Bridge and Gabo Island, south-eastern Australia) of contrasting population size (approximately 100 and 30,000-40,000, respectively). At both colonies, individuals were sampled in areas of comparable nesting density and spatial area. At London Bridge, where individuals use a short (23 m) common pathway from their nests to the shoreline, > 90% (n = 42) of birds displayed foraging associations and 53-60% (n = 20) maintained temporally consistent associations with the same conspecifics. Neither intrinsic (sex, size or body condition) nor extrinsic (nest proximity) factors were found to influence foraging associations. However, individuals that departed from the colony at a similar time were more likely to associate during a foraging trip. At Gabo Island, where individuals use a longer (116 m) pathway with numerous tributaries to reach the shoreline, few individuals (< 31%; n = 13) from neighbouring nests associated at sea and only 1% (n = 1) maintained associations over subsequent trips. However, data from animal-borne video cameras indicated individuals at this colony displayed foraging associations of similar group size to those at London Bridge. This study reveals that group foraging behaviour occurs at multiple colonies and the pathways these individuals traverse with conspecifics may facilitate opportunistic group formation and resulting in foraging associations irrespective of nesting proximity and other factors

    Multicomponent frailty assessment tools for older people with psychiatric disorders: a systematic review

    Objective: To review evidence evaluating the use of multi-component frailty assessment tools in assessing frailty in older adults with psychiatric disorders. Methods: A systematic literature review was conducted to identify all multi-component frailty assessment tools (i.e. a tool that assesses ≥2 indicators of frailty). The items of each frailty assessment tool were compared to DSM-5 diagnostic criteria for psychiatric disorders to assess construct overlap. Studies conducted in community, inpatient and outpatient clinical settings were considered for inclusion. Participants: Adults aged ≥60 years old. Results: 5,639 studies in total were identified following the removal of duplicates; 97 of which were included for review. Of the 48 multi-component frailty assessment tools identified, no tool had been developed for, or validated in, older adult populations with psychiatric disorder. 24/48 frailty assessment tools contained a psychological assessment domain, with 18/48 tools using presence of depressed mood and/or anxiety as a frailty indicator. Common areas of construct overlap in frailty assessment tools and DSM-5 diagnostic criteria included weight loss (29/48) and fatigue (21/48). Conclusions: Significant construct overlap exists between the indicators of frailty as conceptualised in existing frailty assessment tools and DSM-5 diagnostic criteria for common psychiatric disorders, including Major Depressive Episode and Generalised Anxiety Disorder, which has the potential to confound frailty assessment results. Further research is necessary to establish a reliable and valid tool to assess frailty in this population

    Reinforcement Learning for Multiple HAPS/UAV Coordination: Impact of Exploration-Exploitation Dilemma on Convergence.

    This work analyses the application of Reinforcement Learning (RL) for coordinating multiple Unmanned High Altitude Platform Stations (HAPS) or Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) for providing communications area coverage to a community of fixed and mobile users. Multiple agent coordination techniques are essential for developing autonomous capabilities for multi-UAV/HAPS control and management. This paper examines the impact of exploration-exploitation dilemma on the application of RL for coordinating multiple UAVs/HAPS. In the work, it is observed that RL convergence is a challenge, as the RL algorithm struggles to find optimal positioning for maximum user coverage. This paper attempts to establish the source of the convergence issue with the RL technique for this specific application scenario. The work goes on to suggest methods to minimise this impact, and some insights for applying RL techniques for multi-agent coordination for communications area coverage

    Cognitive Spectrum Management in Dynamic Cellular Environments: : A Case-Based Q-Learning Approach

    This paper examines how novel cellular system architectures and intelligent spectrum management techniques can be used to play a key role in accommodating the exponentially increasing demand for mobile data capacity in the near future. A significant challenge faced by the artificial intelligence methods applied to such flexible wireless communication systems is their dynamic nature, e.g. network topologies that change over time. This paper proposes an intelligent case-based Q-learning method for dynamic spectrum access (DSA) which improves and stabilises the performance of cognitive cellular systems with dynamic topologies. The proposed approach is the combination of classical distributed Q-learning and a novel implementation of case-based reasoning which aims to facilitate a number of learning processes running in parallel. Large scale simulations of a stadium small cell network show that the proposed case-based Q-learning approach achieves a consistent improvement in the system quality of service (QoS) under dynamic and asymmetric network topology and traffic load conditions. Simulations of a secondary spectrum sharing scenario show that the cognitive cellular system that employs the proposed case-based Q-learning DSA scheme is able to accommodate a 28-fold increase in the total primary and secondary system throughput, but with no need for additional spectrum and with no degradation in the primary user QoS

    Frequency of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) testing in urban vs. rural areas of the United States: Results from a nationally-representative sample

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Studies in the United States show that rural persons with HIV are more likely than their urban counterparts to be diagnosed at a late stage of infection, suggesting missed opportunities for HIV testing in rural areas. To inform discussion of HIV testing policies in rural areas, we generated nationally representative, population-based estimates of HIV testing frequencies in urban vs. rural areas of the United States.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Secondary analysis of 2005 and 2009 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) data. Dependent variables were self-reported lifetime and past-year HIV testing. Urban vs. rural residence was determined using the metropolitan area framework and Urban Influence Codes and was categorized as 1) metropolitan, center city (the most urban); 2) metropolitan, other; 3) non-metropolitan, adjacent to metropolitan; 4) non-metropolitan, micropolitan; and 4) remote, non-metropolitan (the most rural).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The 2005 sample included 257,895 respondents. Lifetime HIV testing frequencies ranged from 43.6% among persons residing in the most urban areas to 32.2% among persons in the most rural areas (P < 0.001). Past-year testing frequencies ranged from 13.5% to 7.3% in these groups (P < 0.001). After adjusting for demographics (age, sex, race/ethnicity, and region of residence) and self-reported HIV risk factors, persons in the most remote rural areas were substantially less likely than persons in the most urban areas to report HIV testing in the past year (odds ratio 0.65, 95% CI 0.57-0.75). Testing rates in urban and rural areas did not change substantively following the 2006 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommendation for routine, population-based HIV testing in healthcare settings. In metropolitan (urban) areas, 11.5% (95% CI 11.2-11.8) reported past-year HIV testing in 2005 vs. 11.4% (95% CI 11.1%-11.7%) in 2009 (P = 0.93). In non-metropolitan areas, 8.7% (95% CI 8.2%-9.2%) were tested in 2005 vs. 7.7% (95% CI 7.2%-8.2%) in 2009 (P = 0.03).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Rural persons are less likely than urban to report prior HIV testing, which may contribute to later HIV diagnosis in rural areas. There is need to consider strategies to increase HIV testing in rural areas.</p

    The Acinetobacter baumannii two-component system aders regulates genes required for multidrug efflux, biofilm formation, and virulence in a strain-specific manner

    The opportunistic pathogen Acinetobacter baumannii is able to persist in the environment and is often multidrug resistant (MDR), causing difficulties in the treatment of infections. Here, we show that the two-component system AdeRS, which regulates the production of the AdeABC multidrug resistance efflux pump, is required for the formation of a protective biofilm in an ex vivo porcine mucosal model, which mimics a natural infection of the human epithelium. Interestingly, deletion of adeB impacted only on the ability of strain AYE to form a biofilm on plastic and only on the virulence of strain Singapore 1 for Galleria mellonella. RNA-Seq revealed that loss of AdeRS or AdeB significantly altered the transcriptional landscape, resulting in the changed expression of many genes, notably those associated with antimicrobial resistance and virulence interactions. For example, A. baumannii lacking AdeRS displayed decreased expression of adeABC, pil genes, com genes, and a pgaC-like gene, whereas loss of AdeB resulted in increased expression of pil and com genes and decreased expression of ferric acinetobactin transport system genes. These data define the scope of AdeRS-mediated regulation, show that changes in the production of AdeABC mediate important phenotypes controlled by AdeRS, and suggest that AdeABC is a viable target for antimicrobial drug and antibiofilm discovery. IMPORTANCE Acinetobacter baumannii is a nosocomial pathogen and is an increasing problem in hospitals worldwide. This organism is often multidrug resistant, can persist in the environment, and forms a biofilm on environmental surfaces and wounds. Overproduction of efflux pumps can allow specific toxic compounds to be pumped out of the cell and can lead to multidrug resistance. This study demonstrates the role of the A. baumannii efflux pump AdeB, and its regulator AdeRS, in multidrug resistance, epithelial cell killing, and biofilm formation. Deletion of the genes encoding these systems led to increased susceptibility to antibiotics, decreased biofilm formation on biotic and abiotic surfaces, and decreased virulence. Our data suggest that inhibition of AdeB could prevent biofilm formation or colonization in patients by A. baumannii and provides a good target for drug discovery
