    What Are the Visible and Invisible Archaeologies of Conflict in the Irish Landscape of Donegal and How May These Be Contextualised and Represented Through Arts Practice

    The research question - What are the visible and invisible archaeologies of conflict in the Irish landscape of Donegal and how may these be contextualised and represented through arts practice? has been addressed through textual and historical research and through arts practice, using lens-based media in the exploration of an historic series of military circumstances, in the contemporary Irish landscape of County Donegal. The research undertaken and the resulting outcomes are presented as a textual narrative and as visual arts practice. The thesis material is composed of five chapters, each of which discusses selected arguments in the fields of, respectively; the modification of human sight through opticality and the emergence of modern photography, origins of the geographical discipline and the visual influence on formations of cultural landscape, a contemporary archaeological approach to sites of conflict and examples of relevant artwork, and a characterisation and discussion of Ireland\u27s position of neutrality during the Second World War, including a critical review of the images produced on this topic. This fourth chapter is intended to function as context and framework for the fifth chapter, the re-imagining of the landscape through the arts practice, shown in the Arc of Fire website, which is composed of selected visual material from the live research phase and the site-specific exhibition installed in Fort Dunree in the Inishowen peninsula. The conclusions form the final part of the thesis.     Of Heinrich von Kleist's eight Novellen, Das Erdbeben in Chili was amongst the first to be written. Whilst it is impossible to state with any certainty its chronology in relation to others of his early Novellen, it was probably completed by autumn 1806 and was certainly the first to be published.¹

    Derivation and validation of murine histologic alterations resembling asthma, with two proposed histologic grade parameters

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The objective was to define murine histologic alterations resembling asthma in a BALB/c OVA model and to suggest grading criteria. Identified were six salient histologic findings in lungs with putative allergic inflammation: 1) bronchoarterial space inflammation; 2) peri-venular inflammation; 3) inflammation about amuscular blood vessels; 4) inter-alveolar space inflammation, not about capillaries; 5) pleural inflammation; and 6) eosinophils within the inflammatory aggregates. An initial study comprised six groups of twelve mice each: 1) stressed, control; 2) stressed, sensitized; 3) stressed, challenged; 4) not physically stressed, control; 5) not physically stressed, sensitized; 6) not physically stressed, challenged. A second study comprised four experimental groups of twenty mice each: 1) stressed, control; 2) stressed, challenged; 3) not physically stressed, control; 4) not physically stressed, challenged. A third study evaluated two grading criteria, 1) the proportion of non-tracheal respiratory passages with inflammatory aggregates and 2) mitoses in the largest two non-tracheal respiratory passages, in five groups of five mice each, evaluated at different times after the last exposure.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The first study suggested the six histological findings might reliably indicate the presence of alterations resembling asthma: whereas 82.4% of mice with a complete response had detectable interleukin (IL)-5, only 3.8% of mice without one did; whereas 77.8% of mice with a complete response were challenged mice, only 6.7% of mice without complete responses were. The second study revealed that the six histological findings provided a definition that was 97.4% sensitive and 100% specific. The third study found that the odds of a bronchial passage's having inflammation declined 1) when mitoses were present (OR = 0.73, 0.60 - 0.90), and 2) with one day increased time (OR = 0.75, 0.65 - 0.86).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>A definition of murine histologic alterations resembling asthma in the BALB/c OVA mouse was developed and validated. The definition will be of use in experiments involving this model to ensure that all mice said to have undergone an asthmatic attack did indeed reveal allergic pulmonary inflammation. Proposed grading criteria should be further evaluated with additional studies using physiologic measures of attack severity and increased airway resistance.</p

Recent research, international legislation and Scottish education policy have refocused the notion of ‘special educational needs’ based on ideas of individual deficit to support and provision for all learners. As teachers are therefore charged with responsibility for an increasingly diverse population of learners, the National Framework of Inclusion was developed to support both pre-service and qualified teachers to work inclusively to provide fair and meaningful experiences for all learners. The paper examines the underpinning principles of the Framework, describes the collaborative process of its development and provides one innovative example of its use

    The IMPROVE guidelines (Ischaemia Models: Procedural Refinements Of in Vivo Experiments)

    Most in vivo models of ischaemic stroke target the middle cerebral artery and a spectrum of stroke severities, from mild to substantial, can be achieved. This review describes opportunities to improve the in vivo modelling of ischaemic stroke and animal welfare. It provides a number of recommendations to minimise the level of severity in the most common rodent models of middle cerebral artery occlusion, while sustaining or improving the scientific outcomes. The recommendations cover basic requirements pre-surgery, selecting the most appropriate anaesthetic and analgesic regimen, as well as intraoperative and post-operative care. The aim is to provide support for researchers and animal care staff to refine their procedures and practices, and implement small incremental changes to improve the welfare of the animals used and to answer the scientific question under investigation. All recommendations are recapitulated in a summary poster (see supplementary information)

    The Genetic Impact of Stress Responsiveness and Disease Susceptibility in Pigs

    126 p.Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2005.Stress can impact various aspects of the immune system by either stimulating or suppressing the specific immune response initiated by the stressor. The experiment described in chapter 1 was designed to evaluate the impact of five breeds of pigs at three different ages on aspects of the innate immune system, cortisol (CORT) concentrations, and performance measures. Overall, there was a significant breed x age interaction for CORT, immunoglobulin G, phagocytosis (PHAGO), chemotaxis (CHTX), and performance measures. The experiment in chapter 2 was designed to determine the impact of subjecting three breeds and two commercial lines of pigs to stressors for 14 continuous days on various aspects of the innate immune system, CORT, and performance measures and the impact social status has on these responses. Pig breed or pig line did not influence the immune response to the stressors imposed in this study, but stress affected CORT, lymphocyte proliferation (LPA), and natural killer cytotoxicity (NK). Furthermore, among stressed-pigs, social status influenced total white blood cell counts (WBC), NK, and PHAGO. The experiment described in chapter 3 was designed to determine the effect of heat stress and social status on the immune response and performance of pigs infected with porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) virus. Total WBC, CORT, macrophage sub-populations, PHAGO, and performance measures were different in pigs infected with PRRS compared to non-infected pigs. Heat stress influenced CORT and performance measures of pigs. However, PRRS and heat stress did not have an additive impact on the immune responses assessed in this study. Furthermore, pig social status affected body weight, macrophage sub-populations, interferon-gamma, LPA, and NK. In conclusion, there are baseline differences in the immune status among different breeds of pig but pig breed does not apparently influence the immune responsiveness to stressors imposed for 14-d. Heat stress does not appear to have an additive negative affect on the immune responsiveness of young pigs to PRRS. However, social status consistently influenced the immune responsiveness of pigs to both stressors and PRRS.     Animal Health and Welfare Issues Facing Organic Production Systems

    The demand for organically-grown produce is increasing worldwide, with one of the drivers being an expectation among consumers that animals have been farmed to a high standard of animal welfare. This review evaluates whether this expectation is in fact being met, by describing the current level of science-based knowledge of animal health and welfare in organic systems. The primary welfare risk in organic production systems appears to be related to animal health. Organic farms use a combination of management practices, alternative and complementary remedies and convenional medicines to manage the health of their animals and in many cases these are at least as effective as management practices employed by non-organic producers. However, in contrast to non-organic systems, there is still a lack of scientifically evaluated, organically acceptable therapeutic treatments that organic animal producers can use when current management practices are not sufficient to maintain the health of their animals. The development of such treatments are necessary to assure consumers that organic animal-based food and fibre has not only been produced with minimal or no chemical input, but under high standards of animal welfare

    Clove Oil Delays Rather Than Prevents Scur/Horn Growth in Dairy Cattle

    The objective of this study was to evaluate if administration of clove oil prevents scur/horn growth in dairy cattle long term. At approximately 4 days of age, calves had one of four treatments assigned to each horn bud: (1) clove oil administered subcutaneously under the horn bud (CLOV, n = 132); (2) cautery disbudded and the horn bud removed (BUDOFF, n = 126); (3) cautery disbudded and the horn bud tissue left intact (BUDON, n = 129); (4) a liquid nitrogen filled probe applied to the horn bud area (CRYO, n = 131). At approximately 16 months of age, all cattle were checked for scur or horn development. A sub-set of scurs/horns from the CLOV cattle were removed to evaluate tissue and structural development. In total, 5% of CLOV buds developed into horns and 63% into scurs; 10% of the scurs looked like normally developed horns but they were not attached to the skull. Cautery disbudding prevented scur and horn development in cattle when the horn bud tissue was removed, but some scur growth was observed in the BUDON treatment. CRYO was 100% ineffective at preventing scur/horn growth. Injecting clove oil under the horn bud appeared to delay horn development, but not prevent it, when administered to 4 day old dairy calves

    Effects of Transport at Weaning on the Behavior, Physiology and Performance of Pigs

    Transport of pigs to separate production facilities at the time of weaning is a common practice, primarily performed to reduce vertical transfer of disease and enhance production and overall farm efficiency. During transport, pigs are exposed to numerous stressors in conjunction with the stress experienced as a result of weaning. In this review, the behavioral and physiological response of pigs experiencing weaning and transport simultaneously will be described, including the effects of space allowance, season and transport duration. Based on the scientific literature, the gaps in the knowledge regarding potential welfare issues are discussed. Changes in behavior and physiology suggest that weaned pigs may experience stress due to transport. Space allowance, season and duration are aspects of transport that can have a marked impact on these responses. To date, the literature regarding the effects of transport on weaned pigs has primarily focused on the short term stress response and little is known about the effects of concurrent weaning and transport on other aspects of pig welfare including morbidity and mortality rates. Greater understanding of the short and long term consequences of transport on weaned pig welfare particularly in relation to factors such as trip duration, provision of feed and water, and best handling practices would benefit the swine industry.
