Communication research in Asia has enjoyed rapid growth in the 20th century amid Asia’s economic boom, rapid growth in communication technologies and expanded university faculty. To explore the extent to which the rise of Asian communication research continued in the 21st century, a total of 558 publications on Asian communication research in 14 top-ranked SSCI communication journals from 1995 to 2014 were analyzed. Results indicate that the rise of Asian communication research is afoot in the 21st century. However, the results of also suggest patterns of unevenness of the published scholarship in terms of publishing year, journals, region, research topics and methodology: Asian communication research was dominated by East Asia, which was dominated by China, South Korea and Japan; in terms of research areas by topic, Asian communication scholarship focused on a few areas, including media effects, political communication, communication technology, and health communication; in terms of research methodologies, the quantitative approach was found to be dominant in the publications, which accounts for more than twice that of qualitative research.

Repeated Radionuclide therapy in metastatic paraganglioma leading to the highest reported cumulative activity of 131I-MIBG

131I-MIBG therapy for neuroendocrine tumours may be dose limited. The common range of applied cumulative activities is 10-40 GBq. We report the uneventful cumulative administration of 111 GBq (= 3 Ci) 131I-MIBG in a patient with metastatic paraganglioma. Ten courses of 131I-MIBG therapy were given within six years, accomplishing symptomatic, hormonal and tumour responses with no serious adverse effects. Chemotherapy with cisplatin/vinblastine/dacarbazine was the final treatment modality with temporary control of disease, but eventually the patient died of progression. The observed cumulative activity of 131I-MIBG represents the highest value reported to our knowledge, and even though 12.6 GBq of 90Y-DOTATOC were added intermediately, no associated relevant bone marrow, hepatic or other toxicity were observed. In an individual attempt to palliate metastatic disease high cumulative activity alone should not preclude the patient from repeat treatment

A content analysis of research on China in top-ranked communication journals from 1995 to 2014: a comparison with other Asian countries

Scholars have recently turned their attention to China with its rapidly growing economic power. This present study analyzes and compares communication research on China in 14 top-ranked journals over the past 20 years. Our analysis reveals patterns, trends, and gaps in communication research on China during this period. The results indicate that China has received more scholarly attention with publication numbers increasing from 4 articles in 1995 to 13 articles in 2014. China is the most-researched East Asian country. Its research article numbers are twice that of the second-most-researched country, South Korea. China’s political system was the most-used rationale in the research articles. More China-focused studies used a critical/interpretative approach and fewer used mixed approaches compared to research on other Asian countries. As a first-of-its-kind study, our findings offer needed guidance for future research on Chinese communication
