    Effect of Rivet Rows on Propagation of Lambn Waves in Mechanically Fastened Two-Layer Aluminum Plates

    Feasibility of using Lamb waves for disbonds and corrosion detections in aircraft fuselage structures was investigated in recent years. Measurement performed on various laboratory-fabricated specimens as well as on panels removed from aircrafts has shown consistent results and demonstrated its potential applications for large area structural integrity evaluation [1–3]. It has been observed that structural flaws existing on the path of Lamb waves not only changed amplitude of waves but also affected their velocities as well. Amplitude change caused by a disbond of size less than 0.5 in. × 0.5 in. was significant and has been measured. Variation in phase velocity was used to quantify the corrosion-induced thickness reduction in aluminum sheets. An area of size 1 in. × 1 in. with 8% thickness loss in subsurface of an 1 mm thick aluminum plate was detected by monitoring the phase velocity increase of SO mode. While these tests made major progresses toward developing a practical and low cost flaw assessment system, effects due to the presence of certain structural elements, such as coatings and fasteners, on the propagation of Lamb waves are becoming important issues, and need to be analyzed. These effects are themselves interesting physical phenomenon and worth investigation, however, it is hoped that propagation variations of waves induced by structural defects can be separated from these effects and be quantitatively correlated to the physical properties of defects

    Magnetic Property Measurements on Single Wall Carbon Nanotube-Polyimide Composites

    Temperature and magnetic field dependent magnetization measurements were performed on polyimide nanocomposite samples, synthesized with various weight percentages of single wall carbon nanotubes. It was found that the magnetization of the composite, normalized to the mass of nanotube material in the sample, decreased with increasing weight percentage of nanotubes. It is possible that the interfacial coupling between the carbon nanotube (CNT) fillers and the polyimide matrix promotes the diamagnetic response from CNTs and reduces the total magnetization of the composite. The coercivity of the samples, believed to originate from the residual magnetic catalyst particles, was enhanced and had a stronger temperature dependence as a result of the composite synthesis. These changes in magnetic properties can form the basis of a new approach to investigate the interfacial properties in the CNT nanocomposites through magnetic property measurements

    Metal Decorated Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotube/Polyimide Composites with High Dielectric Constants and Low Loss Factors

    The measurement of observable electromagnetic phenomena in materials and their derived intrinsic electrical material properties are of prime importance in the discovery and development of material systems for electronic and aerospace applications. Nanocomposite materials comprised of metal decorated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were prepared by a facile method and characterized. Metal particles such as silver(Ag), platinum(Pt) and palladium(Pd) with diameters ranging from less than 5 to over 50 nanometers were distributed randomly on the MWCNTs. The present study is focused on silver decorated MWCNTs dispersed in a polyimide matrix. The Ag-containing MWCNTs were melt mixed into Ultem(TradeMark) and the mixture extruded as ribbons. The extruded ribbons exhibited a moderate to high degree of MWCNT alignment as determined by HRSEM. These ribbons were then fabricated into test specimens while maintaining MWCNT alignment and subsequently characterized for electrical and electromagnetic properties at 8-12 GHz. The results of the electromagnetic characterization showed that certain sample configurations exhibited a decoupling of the permittivity (epsilon ) and loss factor (epsilon") indicating that these properties could be tailored within certain limits. The decoupling and independent control of these fundamental electrical material parameters offers a new class of materials with potential applications in electronics, microwave engineering and optics

    High Temperature Resin/Carbon Nanotube Composite Fabrication

    For the purpose of incorporating multifunctionality into advanced composites, blends of phenylethynyl terminated imides-330 (PETI-330) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were prepared, characterized and fabricated into moldings. PETI-330/MWCNT mixtures were prepared at concentrations ranging from 3 to 25 weight percent by dry mixing the components in a ball mill. The resulting powders were characterized for degree of mixing, thermal and rheological properties. Based on the characterization results, PETI-330/MWCNT samples were scaled up to approximately 300 g and used to fabricate moldings by injecting the mixtures at 260-280 deg C into a stainless steel tool followed by curing for 1 h at 371 deg C. The tool was designed to impart a degree of shear during the injection process in an attempt to achieve some alignment of the MWCNTs in the flow direction. Obtained moldings were subsequently characterized for thermal, mechanical, and electrical properties. The degree of dispersion and alignment of MWCNTs were investigated using high-resolution scanning electron microscopy.     The HY5-PIF regulatory module coordinates light and temperature control of photosynthetic gene transcription

    The ability to interpret daily and seasonal alterations in light and temperature signals is essential for plant survival. This is particularly important during seedling establishment when the phytochrome photoreceptors activate photosynthetic pigment production for photoautotrophic growth. Phytochromes accomplish this partly through the suppression of phytochrome interacting factors (PIFs), negative regulators of chlorophyll and carotenoid biosynthesis. While the bZIP transcription factor long hypocotyl 5 (HY5), a potent PIF antagonist, promotes photosynthetic pigment accumulation in response to light. Here we demonstrate that by directly targeting a common promoter cis-element (G-box), HY5 and PIFs form a dynamic activation-suppression transcriptional module responsive to light and temperature cues. This antagonistic regulatory module provides a simple, direct mechanism through which environmental change can redirect transcriptional control of genes required for photosynthesis and photoprotection. In the regulation of photopigment biosynthesis genes, HY5 and PIFs do not operate alone, but with the circadian clock. However, sudden changes in light or temperature conditions can trigger changes in HY5 and PIFs abundance that adjust the expression of common target genes to optimise photosynthetic performance and growth

    Solitary osteochondroma of the twelfth rib with intraspinal extension and cord compression in a middle-aged patient

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Osteochondroma is a disease of growing bone and thus typically presents in younger patients. It has rarely been described in middle-aged and elderly patients. Data on the occurrence of osteochondroma show that the reported incidence of costal osteochondroma is very low. Moreover, costal osteochondroma arising at the costovertebral junction with neural foraminal extension and spinal cord compression is extremely rare.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>This study reports the case of a 58-year-old patient with a solitary osteochondroma of the 12th rib with intraspinal extension and spinal cord compression. The clinical history, plain radiographs, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging, and pathologic findings of the reported patient have been reviewed. The relevant medical literature has also been reviewed. The patient was treated with surgery for complete tumour excision to avoid tumour recurrence. After surgery, the patient's symptoms improved. An additional CT scan obtained at 1 year after surgery did not show any evidence of recurrence.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>This patient is the oldest patient reported to have this rare form of costal osteochondroma. The age of the patient and the erosion of the adjacent bones raised clinical suspicion of malignancy; therefore, surgical management involved complete tumour excision with thoracolumbar fixation and fusion.</p

    Vertical distributions of organic matter components in sea ice near Cambridge Bay, Dease Strait, Canadian Archipelago

    Ice algae thriving within sea ice play a crucial role in transferring energy to higher trophic levels and influencing biogeochemical processes in polar oceans; however, the distribution of organic matter within the ice interior is not well understood. This study aimed to investigate the vertical distribution of organic matter, including chlorophyll a (Chl-a), particulate organic carbon and nitrogen (POC and PON), carbohydrates (CHO), proteins (PRT), lipids (LIP), and food material (FM), within the sea ice. Samples were collected from the bottom, middle, and top sections of the sea ice column near Cambridge Bay during the spring of 2018. Based on the δ13C signature, biochemical composition, and POC contribution of biopolymeric carbon (BPC), the organic substances within the sea ice were predominantly attributed to marine autotrophs. While the highest concentrations of each parameter were observed at the sea ice bottom, notable concentrations were also found in the upper sections. The average sea ice column-integrated Chl-a concentration was 5.05 ± 2.26 mg m−2, with the bottom ice section contributing 59% (S.D. = ± 10%) to the total integration. The column-integrated concentrations of FM, BPC, POC, and PON were 2.05 ± 0.39, 1.10 ± 0.20, 1.47 ± 0.25, and 0.09 ± 0.03 g m−2, respectively. Contributions of the bottom ice section to these column-integrated concentrations varied for each parameter, with values of 20 ± 6, 21 ± 7, 19 ± 5, and 28 ± 7%, respectively. While the bottom ice section exhibited a substantial Chl-a contribution in line with previous studies, significantly higher contributions of the other parameters were observed in the upper sea ice sections. This suggests that the particulate matter within the interior of the sea ice could potentially serve as an additional food source for higher trophic grazers or act as a seeding material for a phytoplankton bloom during the ice melting season. Our findings highlight the importance of comprehensive field measurements encompassing the entire sea ice section to better understand the distribution of organic carbon pools within the sea ice in the Arctic Ocean

    Mitochondrial DNA Haplogroup Analysis Reveals no Association between the Common Genetic Lineages and Prostate Cancer in the Korean Population

    Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) variation has recently been suggested to have an association with various cancers, including prostate cancer risk, in human populations. Since mtDNA is haploid and lacks recombination, specific mutations in the mtDNA genome associated with human diseases arise and remain in particular genetic backgrounds referred to as haplogroups. To assess the possible contribution of mtDNA haplogroup-specific mutations to the occurrence of prostate cancer, we have therefore performed a population-based study of a prostate cancer cases and corresponding controls from the Korean population. No statistically significant difference in the distribution of mtDNA haplogroup frequencies was observed between the case and control groups of Koreans. Thus, our data imply that specific mtDNA mutations/lineages did not appear to have a significant effect on a predisposition to prostate cancer in the Korean population, although larger sample sizes are necessary to validate our results
