GW Librae: Still Hot Eight Years Post-Outburst
We report continued Hubble Space Telescope (HST) ultraviolet spectra and
ground-based optical photometry and spectroscopy of GW Librae eight years after
its largest known dwarf nova outburst in 2007. This represents the longest
cooling timescale measured for any dwarf nova. The spectra reveal that the
white dwarf still remains about 3000 K hotter than its quiescent value. Both
ultraviolet and optical light curves show a short period of 364-373 s, similar
to one of the non-radial pulsation periods present for years prior to the
outburst, and with a similar large UV/optical amplitude ratio. A large
modulation at a period of 2 h (also similar to that observed prior to outburst)
is present in the optical data preceding and during the HST observations, but
the satellite observation intervals did not cover the peaks of the optical
modulation so it is not possible to determine its corresponding UV amplitude.
The similarity of the short and long periods to quiescent values implies the
pulsating, fast spinning white dwarf in GW Lib may finally be nearing its

iPTF13beo: The Double-Peaked Light Curve of a Type Ibn Supernova Discovered Shortly after Explosion
We present optical photometric and spectroscopic observations of the Type Ibn
(SN 2006jc-like) supernova iPTF13beo. Detected by the intermediate Palomar
Transient Factory ~3 hours after the estimated first light, iPTF13beo is the
youngest and the most distant (~430 Mpc) Type Ibn event ever observed. The
iPTF13beo light curve is consistent with light curves of other Type Ibn SNe and
with light curves of fast Type Ic events, but with a slightly faster rise-time
of two days. In addition, the iPTF13beo R-band light curve exhibits a
double-peak structure separated by ~9 days, not observed before in any Type Ibn
SN. A low-resolution spectrum taken during the iPTF13beo rising stage is
featureless, while a late-time spectrum obtained during the declining stage
exhibits narrow and intermediate-width He I and Si II features with FWHM ~
2000-5000 km/s and is remarkably similar to the prototypical SN Ibn 2006jc
spectrum. We suggest that our observations support a model of a massive star
exploding in a dense He-rich circumstellar medium (CSM). A shock breakout in a
CSM model requires an eruption releasing a total mass of ~0.1 Msun over a time

Investigation and management of an outbreak of Salmonella Typhimurium DT8 associated with duck eggs, Ireland 2009 to 2011.
Salmonella Typhimurium DT8 was a very rare cause of human illness in Ireland between 2000 and 2008, with only four human isolates from three patients being identified. Over a 19-month period between August 2009 and February 2011, 34 confirmed cases and one probable case of Salmonella Typhimurium DT8 were detected, all of which had an MLVA pattern 2-10-NA-12-212 or a closely related pattern. The epidemiological investigations strongly supported a linkbetween illness and exposure to duck eggs. Moreover, S. Typhimurium with an MLVA pattern indistinguishable (or closely related) to the isolates from human cases, was identified in 22 commercial and backyard duck flocks, twelve of which were linked with known human cases. A range of control measures were taken at farm level, and advice was provided to consumers on the hygienic handling and cooking of duck eggs. Although no definitive link was established with a concurrent duck egg-related outbreak of S. Typhimurium DT8 in the United Kingdom, it seems likely that the two events were related. It may be appropriate for other countries with a tradition of consuming duck eggs to consider the need for measures to reduce the risk of similar outbreaks
An asteroseismic constraint on the mass of the axion from the period drift of the pulsating DA white dwarf star L19-2
We employ an asteroseismic model of L19-2, a relatively massive M? ∼ 0.75M and hot (Teff ∼ 12 100 K) pulsating DA (H-rich atmosphere) white dwarf star (DAV or ZZ Ceti variable), and use the observed values of the temporal rates of period change of its dominant pulsation modes (Π ∼ 113 s and Π ∼ 192 s), to derive a new constraint on the mass of the axion, the hypothetical non-barionic particle considered as a possible component of the dark matter of the Universe. If the asteroseismic model employed is an accurate representation of L19-2, then our results indicate hints of extra cooling in this star, compatible with emission of axions of mass ma cos2 β . 25 meV or an axion-electron coupling constant of gae . 7×10−13Instituto de Astrofísica de La PlataFacultad de Ciencias Astronómicas y Geofísica
Found: the progenitors of AM CVn and supernovae .Ia
We present optical and X-ray observations of two tidally distorted, extremely low-mass white dwarfs (WDs) with massive companions. There is no evidence of neutron stars in our Chandra and XMM observations of these objects. SDSS J075141.18−014120.9 (J0751) is an eclipsing double WD binary containing a 0.19 M⊙ WD with a 0.97 M⊙ companion in a 1.9 h orbit. J0751 becomes the fifth eclipsing double WD system currently known. SDSS J174140.49+652638.7 (J1741) is another binary containing a 0.17 M⊙ WD with an unseen M ≥ 1.11 M⊙ WD companion in a 1.5-h orbit. With a mass ratio of ≈0.1, J1741 will have stable mass transfer through an accretion disc and turn into an interacting AM Canum Venaticorum (AM CVn) system in the next ≈160 Myr. With a mass ratio of 0.2, J0751 is likely to follow a similar evolutionary path. These are the first known AM CVn progenitor binary systems and they provide important constraints on the initial conditions for AM CVn. Theoretical studies suggest that both J0751 and J1741 may create thermonuclear supernovae in ∼10^8 yr, either .Ia or Ia. Such explosions can account for ∼1 per cent of the Type Ia supernova rate
Influence of the Intestinal Microbiota on Colonization Resistance to Salmonella and the Shedding Pattern of Naturally Exposed Pigs
[EN] Salmonella colonization and infection in production animals such as pigs are a cause for concern from a public health perspective. Variations in susceptibility to natural infection may be influenced by the intestinal microbiota. Using 16S rRNA compositional sequencing, we characterized the fecal microbiome of 15 weaned pigs naturally infected with Salmonella at 18, 33, and 45 days postweaning. Dissimilarities in microbiota composition were analyzed in relation to Salmonella infection status (infected, not infected), serological status, and shedding pattern (nonshedders, single-point shedders, intermittent-persistent shedders). Global microbiota composition was associated with the infection outcome based on serological analysis. Greater richness within the microbiota postweaning was linked to pigs being seronegative at the end of the study at 11 weeks of age. Members of the Clostridia, such as Blautia, Roseburia, and Anaerovibrio, were more abundant and part of the core microbiome in nonshedder pigs. Cellulolytic microbiota (Ruminococcus and Prevotella) were also more abundant in noninfected pigs during the weaning and growing stages. Microbial profiling also revealed that infected pigs had a higher abundance of Lactobacillus and Oscillospira, the latter also being part of the core microbiome of intermittent-persistent shedders. These findings suggest that a lack of microbiome maturation and greater proportions of microorganisms associated with suckling increase susceptibility to infection. In addition, the persistence of Salmonella shedding may be associated with an enrichment of pathobionts such as Anaerobiospirillum. Overall, these results suggest that there may be merit in manipulating certain taxa within the porcine intestinal microbial community to increase disease resistance against Salmonella in pigs. IMPORTANCE Salmonella is a global threat for public health, and pork is one of the main sources of human salmonellosis. However, the complex epidemiology of the infection limits current control strategies aimed at reducing the prevalence of this infection in pigs. The present study analyzes for the first time the impact of the gut microbiota in Salmonella infection in pigs and its shedding pattern in naturally infected growing pigs. Microbiome (16S rRNA amplicon) analysis reveals that maturation of the gut microbiome could be a key consideration with respect to limiting the infection and shedding of Salmonella in pigs. Indeed, seronegative animals had higher richness of the gut microbiota early after weaning, and uninfected pigs had higher abundance of strict anaerobes from the class Clostridia, results which demonstrate that a fast transition from the suckling microbiota to a postweaning microbiota could be crucial with respect to protecting the animalsSIThis study was funded by the Food Institutional Research Measure (FIRM) administered by the Department of Agriculture Food and the Marine (DAFM). Low Levels of Peripheral CD161++CD8+ Mucosal Associated Invariant T (MAIT) Cells Are Found in HIV and HIV/TB Co-Infection
Background: High expression of CD161 on CD8+ T cells is associated with a population of cells thought to play a role in mucosal immunity. We wished to investigate this subset in an HIV and Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) endemic African setting. Methods: A flow cytometric approach was used to assess the frequency and phenotype of CD161++CD8+ T cells. 80 individuals were recruited for cross-sectional analysis: controls (n = 18), latent MTB infection (LTBI) only (n = 16), pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) only (n = 8), HIV only (n = 13), HIV and LTBI co-infection (n = 15) and HIV and TB co-infection (n = 10). The impact of acute HIV infection was assessed in 5 individuals recruited within 3 weeks of infection. The frequency of CD161++CD8+ T cells was assessed prior to and during antiretroviral therapy (ART) in 14 HIV-positive patients. Results: CD161++CD8+ T cells expressed high levels of the HIV co-receptor CCR5, the tissue-homing marker CCR6, and the Mucosal-Associated Invariant T (MAIT) cell TCR Vα7.2. Acute and chronic HIV were associated with lower frequencies of CD161++CD8+ T cells, which did not correlate with CD4 count or HIV viral load. ART was not associated with an increase in CD161++CD8+ T cell frequency. There was a trend towards lower levels of CD161++CD8+ T cells in HIV-negative individuals with active and latent TB. In those co-infected with HIV and TB, CD161++CD8+ T cells were found at low levels similar to those seen in HIV mono-infection. Conclusions: The frequencies and phenotype of CD161++CD8+ T cells in this South African cohort are comparable to those published in European and US cohorts. Low-levels of this population were associated with acute and chronic HIV infection. Lower levels of the tissue-trophic CD161++ CD8+ T cell population may contribute to weakened mucosal immune defense, making HIV-infected subjects more susceptible to pulmonary and gastrointestinal infections and detrimentally impacting on host defense against TB
The Type Ia Supernova Rate in Redshift 0.5--0.9 Galaxy Clusters
Supernova (SN) rates are potentially powerful diagnostics of metal enrichment
and SN physics, particularly in galaxy clusters with their deep,
metal-retaining potentials and relatively simple star-formation histories. We
have carried out a survey for supernovae (SNe) in galaxy clusters, at a
redshift range 0.5<z<0.9, using the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) on the
Hubble Space Telescope. We reimaged a sample of 15 clusters that were
previously imaged by ACS, thus obtaining two to three epochs per cluster, in
which we discovered five likely cluster SNe, six possible cluster SNe Ia, two
hostless SN candidates, and several background and foreground events. Keck
spectra of the host galaxies were obtained to establish cluster membership. We
conducted detailed efficiency simulations, and measured the stellar
luminosities of the clusters using Subaru images. We derive a cluster SN rate
of 0.35 SNuB +0.17/-0.12 (statistical) \pm0.13 (classification) \pm0.01
(systematic) [where SNuB = SNe (100 yr 10^10 L_B_sun)^-1] and 0.112 SNuM
+0.055/-0.039 (statistical) \pm0.042 (classification) \pm0.005 (systematic)
[where SNuM = SNe (100 yr 10^10 M_sun)^-1]. As in previous measurements of
cluster SN rates, the uncertainties are dominated by small-number statistics.
The SN rate in this redshift bin is consistent with the SN rate in clusters at
lower redshifts (to within the uncertainties), and shows that there is, at
most, only a slight increase of cluster SN rate with increasing redshift. The
low and fairly constant SN Ia rate out to z~1 implies that the bulk of the iron
mass in clusters was already in place by z~1. The recently observed doubling of
iron abundances in the intracluster medium between z=1 and 0, if real, is
likely the result of redistribution of existing iron, rather than new

Early Salmonella Typhimurium infection in pigs disrupts Microbiome composition and functionality principally at the ileum mucosa
[EN] Salmonella is a major foodborne pathogen which successfully infects animal species for human consumption such as swine. The pathogen has a battery of virulence factors which it uses to colonise and persist within the host. The host microbiota may play a role in resistance to, and may also be indirectly responsible from some of the consequences of, Salmonella infection. To investigate this, we used 16S rRNA metagenomic sequencing to determine the changes in the gut microbiota of pigs in response to infection by Salmonella Typhimurium at three locations: ileum mucosa, ileum content and faeces. Early infection (2 days post-infection) impacted on the microbiome diversity at the mucosa, reflected in a decrease in representatives of the generally regarded as desirable genera (i.e., Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus). Severe damage in the epithelium of the ileum mucosa correlated with an increase in synergistic (with respect to Salmonella infection; Akkermansia) or opportunistically pathogenic bacteria (Citrobacter) and a depletion in anaerobic bacteria (Clostridium spp., Ruminococcus, or Dialliser). Predictive functional analysis, together with metabolomic analysis revealed changes in glucose and lipid metabolism in infected pigs. The observed changes in commensal healthy microbiota, including the growth of synergistic or potentially pathogenic bacteria and depletion of beneficial or competing bacteria, could contribute to the pathogen's ability to colonize the gut successfully.
