    Full text link
    Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) is a form of controller which can be programmed for various needs. The basic mechanism of how PLC works is by connecting or disconnecting electric current of an instrument. The objective of this research is to design and evaluate the performance of PLC in handling Multi Input and Multi Output (MIMO) in floriculture for chrysanthemum. The PLC is given task to activate pump for supplying nutrient solution periodically and to control plant environment according to specified set point. The environmental parameters are acidity and temperature of nutrient solution, air temperature and humidity inside the greenhouse. If one of these environmental parameters is above or below the set point, then an appropriate action will be taken according to the programmed algorithm in the PLC. Special attention has been paid for controlling the acidity of nutrient solution. If the acidity of nutrient solution is 5.257, then it will be corrected by opening the bases solenoid valve for 75 times until the acidity increase to 6.017, according to the specified set point (6.0 – 6.5). If the acidity is 6.755, then it will be corrected by opening the acids solenoid valve for 23 times until its acidity decrease to 6.505. Results showed that PLC performed well in controlling the environment parameters of chrysanthemum grown in ebb and flow system

    Parachuting Behavior and Predation by Ants in the Nettle Caterpillar, Scopelodes contracta

    This paper documents the bizarre descending behavior from the tree crown to the ground of the larvae of the moth, Scopelodes contracta Walker (Lepidoptera: Limacodidae) and the interaction of the larva with predatory ants. S. contracta larvae infest leaves of many tree species in urban areas and orchards in Japan. Mature larvae and leaves without basal leaf parts were found under trees of four species infested with S. contracta larvae in Osaka, Japan. Individual larvae riding on leaves were observed falling from tree crowns to the ground. Many S. contracta cocoons were found in the soil below the trees two weeks after the observed parachuting. These observations indicate that S. contracta larvae parachuted to the ground where they spin their cocoons in the soil. When a larva that had just parachuted down was returned to an arboreal twig, the larva repeated the parachuting behavior. This parachuting behavior appears to be adaptive, because larvae can descend to the ground safely and with low energy cost. Worker ants of Tetramorium tsushimae Emery (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) and Pristomyrmex punctatus Mayr (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) occasionally attacked larvae on the ground before they had a chance to burrow in the soil

    Cardiac-Specific SOCS3 Deletion Prevents In Vivo Myocardial Ischemia Reperfusion Injury through Sustained Activation of Cardioprotective Signaling Molecules.

    Myocardial ischemia reperfusion injury (IRI) adversely affects cardiac performance and the prognosis of patients with acute myocardial infarction. Although myocardial signal transducer and activator of transcription (STAT) 3 is potently cardioprotective during IRI, the inhibitory mechanism responsible for its activation is largely unknown. The present study aimed to investigate the role of the myocardial suppressor of cytokine signaling (SOCS)-3, an intrinsic negative feedback regulator of the Janus kinase (JAK)-STAT signaling pathway, in the development of myocardial IRI. Myocardial IRI was induced in mice by ligating the left anterior descending coronary artery for 1 h, followed by different reperfusion times. One hour after reperfusion, the rapid expression of JAK-STAT-activating cytokines was observed. We precisely evaluated the phosphorylation of cardioprotective signaling molecules and the expression of SOCS3 during IRI and then induced myocardial IRI in wild-type and cardiac-specific SOCS3 knockout mice (SOCS3-CKO). The activation of STAT3, AKT, and ERK1/2 rapidly peaked and promptly decreased during IRI. This decrease correlated with the induction of SOCS3 expression up to 24 h after IRI in wild-type mice. The infarct size 24 h after reperfusion was significantly reduced in SOCS3-CKO compared with wild-type mice. In SOCS3-CKO mice, STAT3, AKT, and ERK1/2 phosphorylation was sustained, myocardial apoptosis was prevented, and the expression of anti-apoptotic Bcl-2 family member myeloid cell leukemia-1 (Mcl-1) was augmented. Cardiac-specific SOCS3 deletion led to the sustained activation of cardioprotective signaling molecules including and prevented myocardial apoptosis and injury during IRI. Our findings suggest that SOCS3 may represent a key factor that exacerbates the development of myocardial IRI

    In the title compound, C24H25N3O4, the pyrrolidine ring adopts an envelope conformation while the pyrrolidine-2′′,5′′-dione ring adopts a twist conformation. The indoline unit is planar [maximum deviation of −0.050 (9) Å] and forms a dihedral angle of 40.36 (4)° with the methoxyphenyl ring. Intramolecular C—H⋯O hydrogen bonds are observed. In the crystal, molecules are linked into a two-dimensional network parallel to the ab plane by intermolecular C—H⋯O hydrogen bonds and C—H⋯π interactions

    Thoracoscopic detection of occult indeterminate pulmonary nodules using bronchoscopic pleural dye marking

    Background: The annual incidence of a small indeterminate pulmonary nodule (IPN) on computed tomography (CT) scan remains high. While traditional paradigms exist, the integration of new technologies into these diagnostic and treatment algorithms can result in alternative, potentially more efficient methods of managing these findings. Methods: We report on an alternative diagnostic and therapeutic strategy for the management of an IPN. This approach combines electromagnetic navigational bronchoscopy (ENB) with an updated approach to placement of a pleural dye marker. This technique lends itself to a minimally invasive wedge resection via either video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) or a robotic approach. Results: Subsequent to alterations in the procedure, a cohort of 22 patients with an IPN was reviewed. Navigation was possible in 21 out of 22 patients with one patient excluded based on airway anatomy. The remaining 21 patients underwent ENB with pleural dye marking followed by minimally invasive wedge resection. The median size of the nodules was 13.4 mm (range: 7–29). There were no complications from the ENB procedure. Indigo carmine dye was used in ten patients. Methylene blue was used in the remaining 11 patients. In 81% of cases, the visceral pleural marker was visible at the time of surgery. In one patient, there was diffuse staining of the parietal pleura. In three additional patients, no dye was identified within the hemithorax. In all cases where dye marker was present on the visceral pleural surface, it was in proximity to the IPN and part of the excised specimen. Conclusions: ENB with pleural dye marking can provide a safe and effective method to localize an IPN and can allow for subsequent minimally invasive resection. Depending on the characteristics and location of the nodule, this method may allow more rapid identification intraoperatively

    Full text link
    We report results of a study of charmless B meson decays to three-body KPiPi, KKPi and KKK final states. Measurements of branching fractions for B decays to K+0Pi+Pi-, K+K+K-, K0K+K-, KsKsK+ and KsKsKs final states are presented. The decays B0=>K0K+K-, B+=>KsKsK+ and B0=>KsKsKs are observed for the first time. We also report evidence for B+=>K+K-Pi+ decay. For the three-body final states K0K+K-, KsKsPi+, K+K+Pi- and K-Pi+Pi+ 90% confidence level upper limits are reported. Finally, we discuss the possibility of using the three-body B0=>KsK+K- decay for CP violation studies. The results are obtained with a 78 fb^-1 data sample collected at the Y(4S) resonance by the Belle detector operating at the KEKB asymmetric energy e+e- collider.Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures.     We report results on the decay BDCPKB^{-} \to D_{CP}K^{-} and its charge conjugate using a data sample of 85.4 million BBˉB\bar{B} pairs recorded at the Υ(4S)\Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric e+ee^{+}e^{-} storage ring. Ratios of branching fractions of Cabibbo-suppressed to Cabibbo-favored processes are determined to be B(BD0K)/B(BD0π)=0.077±0.005(stat)±0.006(sys){\cal B}(B^- \to D^0 K^-)/{\cal B}(B^- \to D^0 \pi^-)= 0.077 \pm 0.005(stat) \pm 0.006(sys), B(BD1K)/B(BD1π)=0.093±0.018(stat)±0.008(sys){\cal B}(B^- \to D_1 K^-)/{\cal B}(B^- \to D_1 \pi^-) = 0.093 \pm 0.018(stat) \pm 0.008(sys) and B(BD2K)/B(BD2π)=0.108±0.019(stat)±0.007(sys){\cal B}(B^- \to D_2 K^-)/{\cal B}(B^- \to D_2 \pi^-) = 0.108 \pm 0.019(stat) \pm 0.007(sys) where the indices 1 and 2 represent the CP=+1 and CP=-1 eigenstates of the D0D0ˉD^{0}-\bar{D^{0}} system, respectively. We find the partial-rate charge asymmetries for BDCPKB^{-} \to D_{CP}K^{-} to be A1=0.06±0.19(stat)±0.04(sys){\cal{A}}_1 = 0.06 \pm 0.19(stat) \pm 0.04(sys) and A2=0.19±0.17(stat)±0.05(sys){\cal{A}}_2 = -0.19 \pm 0.17(stat) \pm 0.05(sys).Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Physical Review
