The importance of financing sources like banks is a reality affecting all Spanish economic activities so hotel industry is not an exception in this framework. This study reviews first the main theoretical and empirical studies concerning the financial structure determinants of companies, particularly in hotel industry. Second, we empirically select factors that determine financial structure on Spanish hotel industry. This is useful to identify a few leaders whose financial structure gives indications to the other to reply it. We have defined the financial structure of the companies who are the object of this study based on a wide set of financial ratios grouped by means of a factorial analysis. Data retrieved identifies communalities amongst liquidity ratios, structure, size, growth and profitability. Trying to identify some clusters among the companies that are presenting consolidated financial information, nowadays it can be asserted that the leaders financial structure have some influence within the hotel sector, particularly with internationalized businesses.

Physics in tourism: Modeling destination growth

    Get PDF
Before the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the problem of tourist destination saturation or overtourism was a hot research topic among tourism researchers. The debate was focused on the definition and measurement of the phenomenon and on establishing the conceptual models that explain it. The objective of this note is to propose the use of Newton's Second Motion Law to model the growth of destinations and its derivation in potential issues of overtourism. This theory allows to incorporate more adequately relevant concepts in this context such as resistance to growth than other standard theories in the existing literature

Second homes vs. residential tourism: A research gap

Residential tourism and second homes are two closely related phenomena that constitute a growing research field, but the different names given to the concepts by researchers have led to a fragmented and disconnected literature. These two categories are essentially the same - or share many elements – but the research seems to be disjointed, which, in our opinion, has created a gap in the existing literature on this subject. Specifically, the research on "residential tourism" has expanded to integrate not only second home ownership issues, but the rental of holiday homes to tourists. This commercial use of second homes has been only occasionally referred to by second home authors. Mainstream literature, mainly focused on North American-Canadian and Scandinavian destinations, uses the term "second homes". Conversely, researchers in Mediterranean countries – e.g. Spain or France – prefer the term "residential tourism". Both phenomena are also related with a third concept, to take into account in this context, the visiting friends and relatives tourism (VFR). This note advocates an unified approach to studying this kind of tourism that will extend knowledge in the field and optimise future research efforts

This study analyzes the factors that influence the activity of established rural tourist MSMEs led by women in Costa Rica. Based on institutional theory, formal (human capital, bureaucratic barriers, access to financing and government support) and informal (codes of conduct, social norms and expected family roles) institutional elements influencing female entrepreneurial activity were selected. A fuzzy qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) was performed on a sample of 28 Costa Rican rural tourist businesswomen to find out the interactions between these factors affecting the generation of profits. The research results reveal five different configurations that lead to low or zero profits in female entrepreneurship. Formal factors (bureaucratic barriers and low levels of human capital), combined with the presence or absence of other institutional factors, both formal and informal, represent a critical condition linked to the low or no generation profits in these ventures. The implications of this research contribute to the knowledge of the formal and informal institutional elements affecting the growth of women-led businesses in the Costa Rican rural tourism sector, and to the strengthening of female business activity

This research article aims to define the profile of Costa Rican women entrepreneurs in the rural tourism sector and to determine whether their characteristics and those of their ventures are related to their performance. A mixed methodology has been adopted based on semi-structured and in-depth interviews. The results highlight the importance of family support and contact networks as essential elements for the development of successful enterprises. Family and networks provide two essential elements for the success of women entrepreneurs: access to finance and the formalization of their business. It is particularly important to point out the contribution of this research to the under-studied field of rural entrepreneurs, given their contributions to reducing poverty for which access to information has traditionally been very limited
