On the use of rotational splitting asymmetries to probe the internal rotation profile of stars. Application to β\beta Cephei stars

Rotationally-split modes can provide valuable information about the internal rotation profile of stars. This has been used for years to infer the internal rotation behavior of the Sun. The present work discusses the potential additional information that rotationally splitting asymmetries may provide when studying the internal rotation profile of stars. We present here some preliminary results of a method, currently under development, which intends: 1) to understand the variation of the rotational splitting asymmetries in terms of physical processes acting on the angular momentum distribution in the stellar interior, and 2) how this information can be used to better constrain the internal rotation profile of the stars. The accomplishment of these two objectives should allow us to better use asteroseismology as a test-bench of the different theories describing the angular momentum distribution and evolution in the stellar interiors.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures; IV International Helas conference proceedings (refereed). Investigando la relación entre el autocontrol, la edad y el desajuste psicológico en adolescentes y jóvenes adultos españoles

Este estudio explora las tendencias evolutivas en el autocontrol y su relación con el desajuste psicológico en adolescentes y jóvenes adultos. La muestra estuvo compuesta por 1,600 adolescentes y jóvenes adultos españoles de entre 12 y 34 años (M = 22.28, DT = 6.94) seleccionados aleatoriamente. Se administraron medidas de autocontrol, adicción a internet y síntomas de ansiedad-depresión. El sexo y la edad fueron utilizados como variables de control. Los resultados indicaron que los adolescentes con edades comprendidas entre los 15 y 19 años mostraron las puntuaciones más bajas en autocontrol, mientras que los participantes de más edad puntuaron más alto. Puntuaciones bajas en autocontrol estuvieron significativamente asociadas con mayor consumo de sustancias, más síntomas de ansiedad-depresión y puntuaciones más elevadas en la escala de adicción a internet. Además, los participantes con puntuaciones más altas en la escala de adicción puntuaron más bajo en autocontrol. Estos resultados evidencian las relaciones entre el autocontrol y algunos problemas emocionales y conductuales y sugieren la importancia de promover el autocontrol para prevenir la adicción a internet, el consumo de sustancias y los problemas de ansiedad-depresión en adolescentes y jóvenes adultos.This study explores the relationships of self-control with age and psychological maladjustment in adolescents and young adults. The sample consisted of 1,600 randomly selected Spanish adolescents and young adults, aged 12-34 years ( M = 22.28, SD = 6.94). Measures of self-control, Internet addiction, and anxiety-depressive symptoms were administered. Control variables included age and sex. Results indicated that adolescents between 15 and 19 years old showed the lowest self-control scores, while older participants showed greater scores. Low scores in self-control were significantly associated with greater substance consumption, more anxiety-depression symptoms, and higher scores on the Internet addiction scale. Also, participants with high scores on the addiction scale scored lower on self-control. Daylighting Performance of Solar Control Films for Hospital Buildings in a Mediterranean Climate

One of the main retrofitting strategies in warm climates is the reduction of the effects of solar radiation. Cooling loads, and in turn, cooling consumption, can be reduced through the implementation of reflective materials such as solar control films. However, these devices may also negatively affect daylight illuminance conditions and the electric consumption of artificial lighting systems. In a hospital building, it is crucial to meet daylighting requirements as well as indoor illuminance levels and visibility from the inside, as these have a significant impact on health outcomes. The aim of this paper is to evaluate the influence on natural illuminance conditions of a solar control film installed on the windows of a public hospital building in a Mediterranean climate. To this end, a hospital room, with and without solar film, was monitored for a whole year. A descriptive statistical analysis was conducted on the use of artificial lighting, illuminance levels and rolling shutter aperture levels, as well as an analysis of natural illuminance and electric consumption of the artificial lighting system. The addition of a solar control film to the external surface of the window, in combination with the user-controlled rolling shutter aperture levels, has reduced the electric consumption of the artificial lighting system by 12.2%. Likewise, the solar control film has increased the percentage of annual hours with natural illuminance levels by 100–300 lux

Un análisis espacio-emocional del discurso del asco en la ficción afrodiaspórica contemporánea: Americanah de Adichie y We Need New Names de Bulawayo

The purpose of this paper is to provide a critical comparative analysis of the disgust discourse in Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s Americanah (2013) and NoViolet Bulawayo’s We Need New Names (2013) so as to better understand the current politics of Afrodiasporic subjectivation. Built primarily on Sara Ahmed’s reflections on the emotional economies of disgust developed in The Cultural Politics of Emotion (2004), the discussion explores the relationship between space, emotions and subjectivity from the perspective of the “emotional turn” which is still under development within Postcolonial and Gender Urban Studies. This approach has enabled the understanding of the geographies of disgust in the two selected novels as an illustration of the exclusion process of racialisation in present urban spaces. Moreover, the interpretation of their protagonists as personifications of Isabel Carrera Suárez’s “post-colonial and post-diasporic pedestrian” (2015) has showed how an abject condition in non-western cities is primarily the result of the diverse forms of violence resulting from a failed process of decolonisation, while this corresponds to an ambivalent social positionality in the hegemonic metropolis. Social abjection has been thus revealed as a fundamental negotiation status in thesubjectivation process of contemporary Afrodiasporians. El propósito de este artículo es aportar un análisis crítico comparativo del discurso del asco en Americanah (2013), de Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, y We Need New Names (2013), de NoViolet Bulawayo, para obtener un conocimiento más profundo de las políticas actuales de subjetivación afrodiaspórica. La discusión, fundamentada principalmente en las reflexiones de Sara Ahmed en The Cultural Politics of Emotion sobre las economías afectivas del asco (2004), examina la relación entre el espacio, las emociones y la subjetividad desde la perspectiva del “giro emocional” que todavía está desarrollándose dentro de los Estudios Urbanos Postcoloniales y de Género. Este planteamiento ha permitido reconocer las geografías del asco en las dos novelas seleccionadas que ilustran los procesos de racialización de los espacios urbanos contemporáneos. Asimismo, la identificación de sus protagonistas como personificaciones del “peatón” postcolonial y postdiaspórico de Isabel Carrera Suárez (2015) ha revelado que la condición abyecta en las ciudades no occidentales resulta principalmente de las diversas formas de violencia que se derivan de un proceso de descolonización fallido, mientras que este se corresponde con una posicionalidad social ambivalente en la metrópolis hegemónica. En este sentido, la abyección social se revela como una forma de negociación fundamental en el proceso de subjetivación de los sujetos afrodiaspóricos contemporáneos

El cronista de la noche: la temática de Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec

Como indica el título de este trabajo, el principal propósito es el estudio de las temáticas que se han considerado más relevantes y sustanciales dentro de la obra de Toulouse-Lautrec, todas ellas unidas por el hilo conductor del ambiente nocturno. No obstante, cabe destacar que, por tanto, no se trata de un trabajo genérico acerca de la vida y la obra de un artista, sino que se centra exclusivamente en la temática de su obra al considerarlo un aspecto mucho más ameno y atrayente a la hora de abordar el trabajo. Así, aunque no se trata de un relato biográfico acerca de Toulouse-Lautrec, sí se ha considerado imprescindible mencionar aquellos aspectos de su vida que se encuentran estrechamente ligados al desarrollo y compresión de sus temas. De esta manera, el trabajo plantea cuatro de las temáticas más importantes de su obra, aunque también hay otras interesantes que no se han podido desarrollar por cuestiones de extensión, y todas ellas giran en torno a lo nocturno: los salones de baile, el cartel, la prostitución y el circo. En lo referente a las temáticas de los cabarets y del mundo de la prostitución, la vinculación al ambiente nocturno es más que evidente, sin embargo, las otras dos temáticas constituyen también una relación mucho más sutil y aparentemente oculta. En el caso de la temática del 3 cartel, aunque ya se desarrollará más adelante, es incuestionable el vínculo tan estrecho que se produjo entre la amplia gama de espectáculos y formas de ocio nocturnas con este medio publicitario (al igual que las estrellas más importantes del momento fueron las protagonistas en ambos casos). Por otro lado, el circo, otra de las formas de entretenimiento y de espectáculo más importantes de la época, guarda una profunda relación con algunas de las características más repetidas por Lautrec en sus escenas nocturnas: la incomprensión, la soledad, el misterio, lo sórdido y lo trascendental de la existencia humana

Efficient analysis methodologies for emerging oscillator configurations

Oscillators enable a low-cost and compact implementation of radio-frequency identification (RFID) readers and radar systems, among other. The function integration comes at the cost of a more complex performance and a demanding analysis since the circuit must respond to several specifications, while maintaining the oscillation condition. Here a review of recently introduced semi-analytical formulations, intended for these oscillator-based circuits, is presented. They are based on the use of a numerical model of the standalone oscillator, extracted from harmonic-balance or envelope-transient simulations, which is introduced in an analytical description of the oscillator interaction with the external elements. Various types of formulations, applied to self-injection locked radar, RFID readers and super-regenerative oscillators, will be described and validated.Author is grateful to S. Sancho, F. Stability and phase-noise analysis

This contribution emphasizes the relevance of Prof.Vittorio Rizzoli’s works on stability and phase-noise analysis and describes how they have impacted more recent investigations. Regarding the stability analysis, in 1985 he developed a frequencydomain formulation that provided unvaluable insight into the way how the perturbed system should be described and analyzed. This formulation enabled the application, for the first time, of the Nyquist criterion to circuits simulated with harmonic balance (HB). In 1994, he derived a HB formulation for phase-noise analysis, which considered both the frequency modulation, associated with the timing noise, and the frequency conversion effects; it provided a complete prediction of the noisy oscillator spectrum at small and large offset frequencies from the carrier.
