A knowledge-based expert system for scheduling of airborne astronomical observations
The Kuiper Airborne Observatory Scheduler (KAOS) is a knowledge-based expert system developed at NASA Ames Research Center to assist in route planning of a C-141 flying astronomical observatory. This program determines a sequence of flight legs that enables sequential observations of a set of heavenly bodies derived from a list of desirable objects. The possible flight legs are constrained by problems of observability, avoiding flyovers of warning and restricted military zones, and running out of fuel. A significant contribution of the KAOS program is that it couples computational capability with a reasoning system
Dust-temperature of an isolated star-forming cloud: Herschel observations of the Bok globule CB244
We present Herschel observations of the isolated, low-mass star-forming Bok
globule CB244. It contains two cold sources, a low-mass Class 0 protostar and a
starless core, which is likely to be prestellar in nature, separated by 90
arcsec (~ 18000 AU). The Herschel data sample the peak of the Planck spectrum
for these sources, and are therefore ideal for dust-temperature and column
density modeling. With these data and a near-IR extinction map, the MIPS 70
micron mosaic, the SCUBA 850 micron map, and the IRAM 1.3 mm map, we model the
dust-temperature and column density of CB244 and present the first measured
dust-temperature map of an entire star-forming molecular cloud. We find that
the column-averaged dust-temperature near the protostar is ~ 17.7 K, while for
the starless core it is ~ 10.6K, and that the effect of external heating causes
the cloud dust-temperature to rise to ~ 17 K where the hydrogen column density
drops below 10^21 cm^-2. The total hydrogen mass of CB244 (assuming a distance
of 200 pc) is 15 +/- 5 M_sun. The mass of the protostellar core is 1.6 +/- 0.1
M_sun and the mass of the starless core is 5 +/- 2 M_sun, indicating that ~ 45%
of the mass in the globule is participating in the star-formation process.Comment: Accepted for A&A Herschel Special Issue; 5 pages, 2 figure
Ecological study of aquatic midges and some related insects with special reference to feeding habits
Towards the electron EDM search: Theoretical study of HfF+
We report first ab initio relativistic correlation calculations of potential
curves for ten low-lying electronic states, effective electric field on the
electron and hyperfine constants for the ^3\Delta_1 state of cation of a heavy
transition metal fluoride, HfF^+, that is suggested to be used as the working
state in experiments to search for the electric dipole moment of the electron.
It is shown that HfF^+ has deeply bound ^1\Sigma^+ ground state, its
dissociation energy is D_e=6.4 eV. The ^3\Delta_1 state is obtained to be the
relatively long-lived first excited state lying about 0.2 eV higher. The
calculated effective electric field E_eff=W_d|\Omega| acting on an electron in
this state is 5.84*10^{24}Hz/(e*cm)Comment: 4 page
Prospects for an electron electric dipole moment search in metastable ThO and ThF
The observation of an electron electric dipole moment (eEDM) would have major
ramifications for the standard model of physics. Polar molecules offer a
near-ideal laboratory for such searches due to the large effective electric
field (), on order of tens of GV/cm that can be easily
oriented in the lab frame. We present an improved method for simply and
accurately determining , in a heavy polar molecule, allowing
for a quick determination of candidates for an eEDM experiment. We apply this
method to ThO and ThF, both of which possess metastable
electronic states. The values of in ThO and ThF
are estimated to be 104 GV/cm and 90 GV/cm respectively, and are therefore two
of the best known candidates for the eEDM search.Comment: Two column format submitted to PR
Using Molecules to Measure Nuclear Spin-Dependent Parity Violation
Nuclear spin-dependent parity violation arises from weak interactions between
electrons and nucleons, and from nuclear anapole moments. We outline a method
to measure such effects, using a Stark-interference technique to determine the
mixing between opposite-parity rotational/hyperfine levels of ground-state
molecules. The technique is applicable to nuclei over a wide range of atomic
number, in diatomic species that are theoretically tractable for
interpretation. This should provide data on anapole moments of many nuclei, and
on previously unmeasured neutral weak couplings
Design and Development of a Magnus Hydrokinetic Rotor
The energy matrix diversification has become noticed in the latest years. Energy conversion of the free flow in rivers and canals into electrical energy has been a good complementation for the conventional generation. The first application of hydrokinetic turbines, commercially, were in Mississippi's river (Minnesota, USA), in 2008. The USAge of Magnus effect in hydrokinetic turbines occurred in an innovative manner. In this project, rotational cylinders actuate as blades of an axial hydrokinetic rotor, converting kinetic energy of the flow into potency in the rotor axle. This effect was initially observed in 1853 by Henrich Magnus and, since then, few researches were carried out to its application in hydraulic generation of energy. Therefore, tests in reduced-scale prototype and numerical simulations were made for the development and executive design of a hydrokinetic rotor. At the end of this study, a hydro generator with 62% hydraulic efficiency, considering the Betz Limit, was constructed
