The purpose of this review is to summarize and evaluate the current state of the literature with regards to attachment and its relationship to emotion in middle childhood and adolescence. This is a relatively new topic of interest and one which is well grounded in theory. The attachment relationship between parents and children is a key mechanism by which children and adolescents learn emotion skills, including emotion understanding, coping strategies, and how to manage different affective experiences. The review is organized by emotion domain, including emotion understanding, affective experiences, physiological indicators of arousal and emotion, and processes for the regulation of emotion. We included studies which presented data for children and adolescents ages 6-18, and included measures of emotion and parent-child attachment. Although some areas have been investigated more than others, we found that secure attachment was related to more adaptive functioning in each of the emotion domains. Finally, we review future directions to be explored and address gaps in the current literature.

Mother’s health after baby’s birth: does delivery method matter? : Does the delivery method matter?

The dramatic increase in the utilization of caesarean section has raised concerns on its impact on public expenditure and health. While the financial costs associated with this surgical procedure are well recognized, less is known on the intangible health costs borne by mothers and their families. We contribute to the debate by investigating the effect of unplanned caesarean deliveries on mothers’ mental health in the first nine months after the delivery. Differently from previous studies, we account for the unobserved heterogeneity due to the fact that mothers who give birth through an unplanned caesarean delivery may be different than mothers who give birth with a natural delivery. Identification is achieved exploiting exogenous variation in the position of the baby in the womb at the time of delivery while controlling for hospital unobserved factors. We find that mothers having an unplanned caesarean section are at higher risk of developing postnatal depression and this result is robust to alternative specifications

Objective The study examined the relations between trust beliefs in physicians, adherence to prescribed medical regimes, and quality of life for children with asthma and their mothers. Methods One hundred and 43 children with asthma (116 males, M = 12 years- 7 months) and their mothers were tested twice (Time1/T1 and Time2/T2) across a one-year period. Standardized measures were administered that assessed the children’s and mothers’ trust beliefs in physicians, the children’s quality of life, and children’s adherence to prescribed medical regimes (adherence). Results Correlations were found between children’s trust beliefs in physicians, mothers’ trust beliefs in physicians, adherence and quality of life. SEM analyses confirmed that: (a) children’s trust beliefs in physicians predicted their adherence and quality of life; and (b) there were reciprocal predictive relations between the children’s and mothers’ trust beliefs in physicians. Conclusions The findings yield support for the conclusions that: (a) trust beliefs in physicians by children with asthma promote their adherence and quality of life; and (b) socialization of trust beliefs in physicians is a mutual mother-child process
