The calcified seaweed (maerl) deposits of the Falkland Islands
Scattered across many foreshore areas around the Falkland Islands (Fig. 1) are fragments of white, limy material derived from carbonate-fixing, marine red algae. Locally, the limy detritus is sufficiently abundant to have built-up substantial beach deposits. In their report accompanying publication of the 1:250 000 scale geological maps of the islands, Aldiss and Edwards (1998) drew attention to the potential importance of these deposits as a source of agricultural lime, particularly in the absence of any other indigenous source of limestone. Very similar material has been exploited elsewhere in the world for both agricultural and horticultural use; for example, sub-tidal banks were extensively dredged in the English Channel off Cornwall and Brittanny. There, the limy, algal debris is referred to generically as Lithothamion, and commercially as maerl. The equivalent material in the Falkland Islands is known locally as calcified seaweed

Comorbidities, exposure to medications, and the risk of community-acquired clostridium difficile infection: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Background. Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) has been extensively escribedin healthcare settings; however, risk factor sassociated with community-acquired (CA) CDI remain uncertain. This study aimed to synthesize the current evidence for an association between commonly prescribed medications and comorbidities with CA-CDI. methods. A systematic search was conducted in 5 electronic databases for epidemiologicstudi esthatexamined the associtation between the presence of comorbidities and exposure to medications with the risk of CA-CDI. Pooled odds ratios were estimated using 3 meta-analytic methods. Subgroup analyses by location of studies and by life stages were conducted. results. Twelve publications (n=56,776 patients) met inclusion criteria. Antimicrobial (odds ratio, 6.18; 95% CI, 3.80-10.04) and corticosteroid (1.81; 1.15-2.84) exposure were associated with increased risk of CA-CDI. Among the comorbidities, inflammatory bowel disease (odds ratio, 3.72; 95% CI, 1.52-9.12), renal failure (2.64; 1.23-5.68), hematologic cancer (1.75; 1.02-5.68), and diabetes mellitus (1.15; 1.05-1.27) were associated with CA-CDI. By location, antimicrobial exposure was associated with a higher risk of CA-CDI in the United States, whereas proton-pump inhibitor exposure was associated with a higher risk in Europe. By life stages, the risk of CA-CDI associated with antimicrobial exposure greatly increased in adults older than 65 years. conclusions. Antimicrobial exposure was the strongest risk factor associated with CA-CDI. Further studies are required to investigate the risk of CA-CDI associated with medications commonly prescribed in the community. Patients with diarrhea who have inflammatory bowel disease, renal failure, hematologic cancer, or diabetes are appropriate populations for interventional studies of screening

This article draws on research undertaken with a Local Learning and Employment Network (LLEN) in the state of Victoria, Australia. LLEN are networks that were implemented by the state government in 2001 to undertake community capacity building through which the outcomes of young people aged 15-19 in education, training and employment would be enhanced. In 2008, in the context
of an enhanced federal commitment to social inclusion through ‘joining-up’, the Victorian experience provides insights on the implications of such policy initiatives. Drawing on Bourdieu’s discussion of the forms of capital and
Granovetter’s notion of the strength of weak ties, I argue that stores of economic, cultural and social capital as outlined by Bourdieu were necessary, but insufficient, for LLEN to achieve the objectives with which they were charged
given the failure of government to follow through on the implications of its policies. I argue for a commitment on the part of all stakeholders to realise the potential of ‘joining-up’
Effective Field Theory for Dilute Fermions with Pairing
Effective field theory (EFT) methods for a uniform system of fermions with
short-range, natural interactions are extended to include pairing correlations,
as part of a program to develop a systematic Kohn-Sham density functional
theory (DFT) for medium and heavy nuclei. An effective action formalism for
local composite operators leads to a free-energy functional that includes
pairing by applying an inversion method order by order in the EFT expansion. A
consistent renormalization scheme is demonstrated for the uniform system
through next-to-leading order, which includes induced-interaction corrections

Ice sheet model dependency of the simulated Greenland Ice Sheet in the mid-Pliocene
The understanding of the nature and behavior of ice sheets in past warm periods is important for constraining the potential impacts of future climate change. The Pliocene warm period (between 3.264 and 3.025 Ma) saw global temperatures similar to those projected for future climates; nevertheless, Pliocene ice locations and extents are still poorly constrained. We present results from the efforts to simulate mid-Pliocene Greenland Ice Sheets by means of the international Pliocene Ice Sheet Modeling Intercomparison Project (PLISMIP). We compare the performance of existing numerical ice sheet models in simulating modern control and mid-Pliocene ice sheets with a suite of sensitivity experiments guided by available proxy records. We quantify equilibrated ice sheet volume on Greenland, identifying a potential range in sea level contributions from warm Pliocene scenarios. A series of statistical measures are performed to quantify the confidence of simulations with focus on inter-model and inter-scenario differences. We find that Pliocene Greenland Ice Sheets are less sensitive to differences in ice sheet model configurations and internal physical quantities than to changes in imposed climate forcing. We conclude that Pliocene ice was most likely to be limited to the highest elevations in eastern and southern Greenland as simulated with the highest confidence and by synthesizing available regional proxies; however, the extent of those ice caps needs to be further constrained by using a range of general circulation model (GCM) climate forcings
External control of the direction of magnetization in ferromagnetic InMnAs/GaSb heterostructures
In this paper, we demonstrate external control over the magnetization
direction in ferromagnetic (FM) In_{1-x}Mn_{x}As/GaSb heterostructures. FM
ordering with T_C as high as 50 K is confirmed by SQUID magnetization,
anomalous Hall effect (AHE), and magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE)
measurements. Even though tensile strain is known to favor an easy axis normal
to the layer plane, at low temperatures we observe that the magnetization
direction in several samples is intermediate between the normal and in-plane
axes. As the temperature increases, however, the easy axis rotates to the
direction normal to the plane. We further demonstrate that the easy
magnetization axis can be controlled by incident light through a bolometric
effect, which induces a pronounced increase in the amplitude of the AHE. A
mean-field-theory model for the carrier-mediated ferromagnetism reproduces the
tendency for dramatic reorientations of the magnetization axis, but not the

Properties of odd nuclei and the impact of time-odd mean fields: A systematic Skyrme-Hartree-Fock analysis
We present a systematic analysis of the description of odd nuclei by the
Skyrme-Hartree-Fock approach augmented with pairing in BCS approximation and
blocking of the odd nucleon. Current and spin densities in the Skyrme
functional produce time-odd mean fields (TOMF) for odd nuclei. Their effect on
basic properties (binding energies, odd-even staggering, separation energies
and spectra) is investigated for the three Skyrme parameterizations SkI3, SLy6,
and SV-bas. About 1300 spherical and axially-deformed odd nuclei with 16 < Z <
92 are considered. The calculations demonstrate that the TOMF effect is
generally small, although not fully negligible. The influence of the Skyrme
parameterization and the consistency of the calculations are much more
important. With a proper choice of the parameterization, a good description of
binding energies and their differences is obtained, comparable to that for even
nuclei. The description of low-energy excitation spectra of odd nuclei is of
