Colour-singlet strangelets at finite temperature
Considering massless and quarks, and massive (150 MeV) quarks in
a bag with the bag pressure constant MeV, a colour-singlet
grand canonical partition function is constructed for temperatures
MeV. Then the stability of finite size strangelets is studied minimizing the
free energy as a function of the radius of the bag. The colour-singlet
restriction has several profound effects when compared to colour unprojected
case: (1) Now bulk energy per baryon is increased by about MeV making the
strange quark matter unbound. (2) The shell structures are more pronounced
(deeper). (3) Positions of the shell closure are shifted to lower -values,
the first deepest one occuring at , famous -particle ! (4) The shell
structure at vanishes only at MeV, though for higher
-values it happens so at MeV.Comment: Revtex file(8 pages)+6 figures(ps files) available on request from

Penetration of cefuroxime into the cerebrospinal fluid of patients with traumatic brain injury
Cefuroxime levels were measured in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and serum of four patients with traumatic brain injury following the implantation of intraventricular catheters. The levels ranged from 0.15 to 2.03 μg/mL in CSF and from 1.8 to 66.9 μg/mL in serum. No ventriculostomy related infections were detecte
Thermo-mechanical behavior of surface acoustic waves in ordered arrays of nanodisks studied by near infrared pump-probe diffraction experiments
The ultrafast thermal and mechanical dynamics of a two-dimensional lattice of
metallic nano-disks has been studied by near infrared pump-probe diffraction
measurements, over a temporal range spanning from 100 fs to several
nanoseconds. The experiments demonstrate that, in these systems, a
two-dimensional surface acoustic wave (2DSAW), with a wavevector given by the
reciprocal periodicity of the array, can be excited by ~120 fs Ti:sapphire
laser pulses. In order to clarify the interaction between the nanodisks and the
substrate, numerical calculations of the elastic eigenmodes and simulations of
the thermodynamics of the system are developed through finite-element analysis.
At this light, we unambiguously show that the observed 2DSAW velocity shift
originates from the mechanical interaction between the 2DSAWs and the
nano-disks, while the correlated 2DSAW damping is due to the energy radiation
into the substrate.Comment: 13 pages, 10 figure
An Application of Physical Flexibility and Software Reconfigurability for the Automation of Battery Module Assembly
Batteries are a strategic technology to decarbonize conventional automotive powertrains and enable energy policy turnaround from fossil fuels to renewable energy. The demand for battery packs is rising, but they remain unable to compete with conventional technologies, primarily due to higher costs. Major sources of cost remain in manufacturing and assembly. These costs can be attributed to a need for high product quality, material handling complexity, uncertain and fluctuating production volumes, and an unpredictable breadth of product variants. This research paper applies the paradigms of flexibility from a mechanical engineering perspective, and reconfigurability from a software perspective to form a holistic, integrated manufacturing solution to better realize product variants. This allows manufacturers to de-risk investment as there is increased confidence that a facility can meet new requirements with reduced effort, and also shows how part of the vision of Industry 4.0 associated with the integration and exploitation of data can be fulfilled. A functional decomposition of battery packs is used to develop a foundational understanding of how changes in customer requirements can result in physical product changes. A Product, Process, and Resource (PPR) methodology is employed to link physical product characteristics to physical and logical characteristics of resources. This mapping is leveraged to enable the design of a gripper with focused flexibility by the Institute for Machine Tools and Industrial Management (iwb) at the Technical University of Munich, as it is acknowledged that mechanical changes are challenging to realize within industrial manufacturing facilities. Reconfigurability is realised through exploitation of data integration across the PPR domains, through the extension of the capabilities of a non-commercial virtual engineering toolset developed by the Automation Systems Group at the University of Warwick. The work shows an “end-to-end” approach that practically demonstrates the application of the flexibility and reconfigurability paradigms within an industrial engineering context
Generic Finite Size Enhancement of Pairing in Mesoscopic Fermi Systems
The finite size dependent enhancement of pairing in mesoscopic Fermi systems
is studied under the assumption that the BCS approach is valid and that the two
body force is size independent. Different systems are investigated such as
superconducting metallic grains and films as well atomic nuclei. It is shown
that the finite size enhancement of pairing in these systems is in part due to
the presence of a surface which accounts quite well for the data of nuclei and
explains a good fraction of the enhancement in Al grains.Comment: Updated version 17/02/0

Enhanced Australian carbon sink despite increased wildfire during the 21st century
Climate projections show Australia becoming significantly warmer during the 21st century, and precipitation decreasing over much of the continent. Such changes are conventionally considered to increase wildfire risk. Nevertheless, we show that burnt area increases in southern Australia, but decreases in northern Australia. Overall the projected increase in fire is small (0.72–1.31% of land area, depending on the climate scenario used), and does not cause a decrease in carbon storage. In fact, carbon storage increases by 3.7–5.6 Pg C (depending on the climate scenario used). Using a process-based model of vegetation dynamics, vegetation–fire interactions and carbon cycling, we show increased fire promotes a shift to more fire-adapted trees in wooded areas and their encroachment into grasslands, with an overall increase in forested area of 3.9–11.9%. Both changes increase carbon uptake and storage. The increase in woody vegetation increases the amount of coarse litter, which decays more slowly than fine litter hence leading to a relative reduction in overall heterotrophic respiration, further reducing carbon losses. Direct CO2 effects increase woody cover, water-use efficiency and productivity, such that carbon storage is increased by 8.5–14.8 Pg C compared to simulations in which CO2 is held constant at modern values. CO2 effects tend to increase burnt area, fire fluxes and therefore carbon losses in arid areas, but increase vegetation density and reduce burnt area in wooded areas
Regulation of ACE2 isoforms by type 2 inflammation and viral infection in human airway epithelium
SARS-CoV-2 enters human cells through its main receptor angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), which constitutes a limiting factor of an infection. Recent findings demonstrating novel ACE2 isoforms implicate that this receptor is regulated in a more complex way than previously anticipated. However, it remains unknown how various inflammatory conditions influence the abundance of these ACE2 variants. Hence, we studied expression of ACE2 mRNA and protein isoforms, together with its glycosylation and spatial localization in primary human airway epithelium upon allergic inflammation and viral infection. We found that interleukin-13, the main type 2 cytokine, decreased expression of long ACE2 mRNA and reduced glycosylation of full length ACE2 protein via alteration of N-linked glycosylation process, limiting its availability on the apical side of ciliated cells. House dust mite allergen did not affect the expression of ACE2. Rhinovirus infection increased short ACE2 mRNA, but it did not influence its protein expression. In addition, by screening other SARS-CoV-2 related host molecules, we found that IL-13 and RV significantly regulated mRNA, but not protein of TMPRSS2 and NRP1. Regulation of ACE2 and other host proteins was comparable in healthy and asthmatic epithelium, underlining lack of intrinsic differences but dependence on the inflammatory milieu in the airways
A new approach to bulk viscosity in strange quark matter at high densities
A new method is proposed to compute the bulk viscosity in strange quark
matter at high densities. Using the method it is straightforward to prove that
the bulk viscosity is positive definite, which is not so easy to accomplish in
other approaches especially for multi-component fluids like strange quark
matter with light up and down quarks and massive strange quarks.Comment: 7pages, talk given in SQM2008. Minor revisions, including
