    Late Quaternary Glacial Geology, Shoreline Morphology, and Tephrochronology of the lliamna/Naknek/Brooks Lake Area, Southwestern Alaska

    This study focuses on the late-Wisconsin Brooks Lake glaciation, lake-level fluctuations, and volcanic deposits in the lliarnna/Naknek/Brooks Lake area on the northern Alaska Peninsula, southwestern Alaska. The Brooks Lake glaciation consists of five stades, from youngest to oldest: Kvichak, Uiarnna, Newhalen, Iliuk, and Ukak. This thesis reassigns the type Mak Hill moraine to a pre-late-Wisconsin glaciation, and considers the moraine enclosing Naknek Lake an early-late-Wisconsin deposit correlative to either the Kvichak stade, lliarnna stade, or both. The presence in the Iliamna Lake valley, and the absence in the Naknek Lake valley of a two-fold earliest-late-Wisconsin Kvichak/Iliamna glacial sequence suggest that the two glacial systems responded differently to climate change, or glacier/bed dynamics due to differing ice sources and glacier configurations. Plant macrofossils dated at 26,155 ± 285 I4C yr BP afford a new maximum-limiting age on the type Kvichak moraine. Slope angles on the type Kvichak and Iliamna moraines are less steep (~11-15°) than on younger Newhalen, lliuk, and Ukak moraines (~18-20° ), indicating that a considerable length of time separated the Iliamna and Newhalen stades. Correlation of this time-stratigraphic marker with other better dated Alaskan glacial sequences suggests that the interstadial occurred -13-14 ka. Following late-Wisconsin de glaciation of the Iliamna and Naknek lake basins, lake levels lowered, creating a flight of wave-cut terraces. Horizontal terraces, formed during latest-Wisconsin/early-Holocene time, at ~40 m above Iliamna Lake, and ~15 and ~30 m above Naknek Lake, suggest that these shorelines are not tilted as a result of glacial isostatic rebound or regional tectonism. The most prominent terraces above both lakes lay about halfway between the highest terrace and present-day lake level. If these terraces are correlative, then this indicates some climate control on lake-level fluctuations. Electron-microprobe analysis of six late-Pleistocene tephra samples allows five samples to be correlated with latest-Pleistocene Lethe tephra, and extends the Lethe ash plume ~125 km westward, and ~150 km northwestward of its presumed source area. Analysis of four early-Holocene black tephras fails to support any correlations, suggesting that there are multiple black tephras in the area. Ash C, a tricolored ash, consists of more than one chemically distinct tephra, and there is little consistency between color zones of the ash at different sites

    Jovian protons and electrons: Pioneer 11

    A preliminary account of the Pioneer 11 passage through the Jovian magnetosphere as viewed by particle detector systems is presented. Emphasis is placed on the region well within the Jovian magnetosphere using data from the LET-II telescope, which measured the proton flux from 0.2 to 21.2 MeV in seven energy intervals and electrons from 0.1 to 2 MeV in four energy intervals. The relative trajectories of Pioneer 10 and 11 are discussed and indicate that Pioneer 11 was exposed to a much lower total radiation dose than Pioneer 10, largely as a result of the retrograde trajectory which approached and exited the inner region of the magnetosphere at high latitudes. Angular distributions, calculations from Pioneer 11 magnetic field data, and the low-energy nucleon component are included in the discussion

    Differential Spatial Gradients of Wheat Streak Mosaic Virus into Winter Wheat from a Central Mite-Virus Source

    The wheat curl mite (WCM), Aceria tosichella Keifer, transmits three potentially devastating viruses to winter wheat. An increased understanding of mite movement and subsequent virus spread through the landscape is necessary to estimate the risk of epidemics by the virus in winter wheat. Owing to the small size of WCMs, their dispersal via wind is hard to monitor; however, the viruses they transmit produce symptoms that can be detected with remote sensing. The objective of this study was to characterize the spatial dispersal of the virus from a central mite-virus source. Virus infection gradients were measured spatially by using aerial remote sensing, ground measurements, geostatistics, and a geographic information system between 2006 and 2009. The red edge position vegetation index as measured via aerial imagery was significantly correlated with in-field biophysical measurements. The occurrence of virus symptoms extended differentially in all directions from mite-virus source plots, and predictions from cokriging revealed an oval pattern surrounding the source but displaced to the southeast. The variable dispersal in different directions appeared to be influenced by the mite source density and wind direction and speed, but temperature also seemed likely to have affected mite spread. The spatial spread revealed in this study may be used to estimate the potential sphere of influence of mite-infested volunteer wheat in production fields. These risk parameter estimates require further validation, but they may potentially aid growers in making better virus management decisions regarding differential virus spread potential away from a central source

    Identifying factors for job motivation of rural health workers in North Viet Nam

    BACKGROUND: In Viet Nam, most of the public health staff (84%) currently works in rural areas, where 80% of the people live. To provide good quality health care services, it is important to develop strategies influencing staff motivation for better performance. METHOD: An exploratory qualitative research was carried out among health workers in two provinces in North Viet Nam so as to identify entry points for developing strategies that improve staff performance in rural areas. The study aimed to determine the major motivating factors and it is the first in Viet Nam that looks at health workers' job perception and motivation. Apart from health workers, managers at national and at provincial level were interviewed as well as some community representatives. RESULTS: The study showed that motivation is influenced by both financial and non-financial incentives. The main motivating factors for health workers were appreciation by managers, colleagues and the community, a stable job and income and training. The main discouraging factors were related to low salaries and difficult working conditions. CONCLUSION: Activities associated with appreciation such as performance management are currently not optimally implemented, as health workers perceive supervision as control, selection for training as unclear and unequal, and performance appraisal as not useful. The kind of non-financial incentives identified should be taken into consideration when developing HRM strategies. Areas for further studies are identified

    The cost of health professionals' brain drain in Kenya

    BACKGROUND: Past attempts to estimate the cost of migration were limited to education costs only and did not include the lost returns from investment. The objectives of this study were: (i) to estimate the financial cost of emigration of Kenyan doctors to the United Kingdom (UK) and the United States of America (USA); (ii) to estimate the financial cost of emigration of nurses to seven OECD countries (Canada, Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Portugal, UK, USA); and (iii) to describe other losses from brain drain. METHODS: The costs of primary, secondary, medical and nursing schools were estimated in 2005. The cost information used in this study was obtained from one non-profit primary and secondary school and one public university in Kenya. The cost estimates represent unsubsidized cost. The loss incurred by Kenya through emigration was obtained by compounding the cost of educating a medical doctor and a nurse over the period between the average age of emigration (30 years) and the age of retirement (62 years) in recipient countries. RESULTS: The total cost of educating a single medical doctor from primary school to university is US65,997;andforeverydoctorwhoemigrates,acountrylosesaboutUS 65,997; and for every doctor who emigrates, a country loses about US 517,931 worth of returns from investment. The total cost of educating one nurse from primary school to college of health sciences is US43,180;andforeverynursethatemigrates,acountrylosesaboutUS 43,180; and for every nurse that emigrates, a country loses about US 338,868 worth of returns from investment. CONCLUSION: Developed countries continue to deprive Kenya of millions of dollars worth of investments embodied in her human resources for health. If the current trend of poaching of scarce human resources for health (and other professionals) from Kenya is not curtailed, the chances of achieving the Millennium Development Goals would remain bleak. Such continued plunder of investments embodied in human resources contributes to further underdevelopment of Kenya and to keeping a majority of her people in the vicious circle of ill-health and poverty. Therefore, both developed and developing countries need to urgently develop and implement strategies for addressing the health human resource crisis

    The match between motivation and performance management of health sector workers in Mali

    Human resources for health (HRH) play a central role in improving accessibility to services and quality of care. Their motivation influences this. In Mali, operational research was conducted to identify the match between motivation and the range and use of performance management activities. OBJECTIVES: To describe the factors motivating and demotivating health workers in Mali and match the motivators with the implementation of performance management. METHODS: First an exploratory qualitative study was conducted: 28 interviews and eight group discussions were held. This was followed by a cross-sectional survey, during which 370 health workers were interviewed. The study population consisted of health workers of eight professional groups. The following issues were investigated: • motivating and demotivating factors; • experiences with performance management, including: job descriptions, continuous education, supervision, performance appraisal and career development. FINDINGS: The study showed that the main motivators of health workers were related to responsibility, training and recognition, next to salary. These can be influenced by performance management (job descriptions, supervisions, continuous education and performance appraisal). Performance management is not optimally implemented in Mali, as job descriptions were not present or were inappropriate; only 13% of interviewees received 4× per year supervision, and training needs were not analysed. Some 48% of the interviewees knew their performance had been appraised in the last two years; the appraisals were perceived as subjective. No other methods were in place to show recognition. The results enabled the research team to propose adaptations or improvements upon existing performance management. CONCLUSION: The results showed the importance of adapting or improving upon performance management strategies to influence staff motivation. This can be done by matching performance management activities to motivators identified by operational research

    Exercise is medicine in rural health centers and federally qualified health centers

    The American College of Sports Medicine in collaboration with the American Medical Association developed the the Exercise is Medicine (EIM) initiative to promote physical activity as a vital sign among health care providers. The purpose of the study is to inform initiative advocacy efforts among Rural Health Centers and Federally Qualified Health Centers. An interview guide was developed through literature review and expert feedback. Provider responses will be recorded via field notes which are coded to extract common themes. The qualitative data collected from these interviews will be used to examine healthcare provider knowledge and awareness of the initiative current behaviors related to patient physical activity, assessment, counseling, prescription, referral and follow-up and the likelihood of these providers using existing Exercise is Medicine (EIM)materials and resources in the future. Our findings and recommendations will be communicated back to the American College of Sports Medicine through the Exercise is Medicine (EIM) Community Health Committee
