Small Navies Do Have a Place in Network-Centric Warfare
In “Small Navies and Network-Centric Warfare” (Naval War College Review, Spring 2003, pp. 1–16), Paul T. Mitchell asked if there is a place for small navies in the world of network-centric warfare. From my perspective as the program executive officer for the U.S. Coast Guard’s Integrated Deepwater System (IDS), the answer is a resounding “Yes!” The price of admission, however, is a network- centric system for C4ISR (command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance), modern air and surface plat- forms, and a well-established relationship with the U.S. Navy
A first AFLP-based genetic linkage map for brine shrimp Artemia franciscana and its application in mapping the sex locus
We report on the construction of sex-specific linkage maps, the identification of sex-linked markers and the genome size estimation for the brine shrimp Artemia franciscana. Overall, from the analysis of 433 AFLP markers segregating in a 112 full-sib family we identified 21 male and 22 female linkage groups (2n = 42), covering 1,041 and 1,313 cM respectively. Fifteen putatively homologous linkage groups, including the sex linkage groups, were identified between the female and male linkage map. Eight sex-linked AFLP marker alleles were inherited from the female parent, supporting the hypothesis of a WZ-ZZ sex-determining system. The haploid Artemia genome size was estimated to 0.93 Gb by flow cytometry. The produced Artemia linkage maps provide the basis for further fine mapping and exploring of the sex-determining region and are a possible marker resource for mapping genomic loci underlying phenotypic differences among Artemia species
Sds3 (Suppressor of Defective Silencing 3) Is an Integral Component of the Yeast Sin3·Rpd3 Histone Deacetylase Complex and Is Required for Histone Deacetylase Activity
SDS3 (suppressor of defective silencing 3) was originally identified in a screen for mutations that cause increased silencing of a crippled HMR silencer in arap1 mutant background. In addition, sds3mutants have phenotypes very similar to those seen in sin3and rpd3 mutants, suggesting that it functions in the same genetic pathway. In this manuscript we demonstrate that Sds3p is an integral subunit of a previously identified high molecular weight Rpd3p·Sin3p containing yeast histone deacetylase complex. By analyzing an sds3Δ strain we show that, in the absence of Sds3p, Sin3p can be chromatographically separated from Rpd3p, indicating that Sds3p promotes the integrity of the complex. Moreover, the remaining Rpd3p complex in the sds3Δ strain had little or no histone deacetylase activity. Thus, Sds3p plays important roles in the integrity and catalytic activity of the Rpd3p·Sin3p complex
The declining prevalence of overweight among Russian children: Income, diet, and physical activity behavior changes
The aim of this study is to examine the relationships among income, diet, physical activity behaviors and overweight among Russian children during a period of economic upheaval. Subjects include 2151 schoolchildren aged 7-13 derived from cross-sectional waves of the Russia Longitudinal Monitoring Surveys in 1995 and in 2002. Diet was assessed by 24-h recall and physical activity (hrs/week) and household income by parental questionnaire. Hours spent in vigorous activities were low (1.0-1.5 hrs/week), and time spent in sedentary behaviors increased from 31 to 37 hrs/week between 1995 and 2002. In 1995 there was a direct relationship of income to energy and fat intake, and time spent in vigorous activity, and an inverse relationship of income to hrs/wk spent in moderate activities (such as walking to school). The effect of having low income parents was less in 2002 than in 1995. Overweight prevalence did not differ significantly by income in either year, but there was a significant decline in overweight among high income children. Only hours spent in moderate physical activity was moderately protective against overweight. Income disparities do not explain trends in overweight among Russian children
