    Stability of constant retrial rate systems with NBU input*

    We study the stability of a single-server retrial queueing system with constant retrial rate, general input and service processes. First, we present a review of some relevant recent results related to the stability criteria of similar systems. Sufficient stability conditions were obtained by Avrachenkov and Morozov (2014), which hold for a rather general retrial system. However, only in the case of Poisson input is an explicit expression provided; otherwise one has to rely on simulation. On the other hand, the stability criteria derived by Lillo (1996) can be easily computed but only hold for the case of exponential service times. We present new sufficient stability conditions, which are less tight than the ones obtained by Avrachenkov and Morozov (2010), but have an analytical expression under rather general assumptions. A key assumption is that interarrival times belongs to the class of new better than used (NBU) distributions. We illustrate the accuracy of the condition based on this assumption (in comparison with known conditions when possible) for a number of non-exponential distributions

    The Delphi technique in ecology and biological conservation: Applications and guidelines

    1. Many areas of science, including conservation and environmental management, regularly require engaging stakeholders or experts to produce consensus or technical inputs. The Delphi technique is an iterative and anonymous participatory method used for gathering and evaluating such expert-based knowledge. 2. We outline the methodology of the Delphi technique and provide a taxonomy of its main variants. In addition, we refine the technique by providing suggestions to address common limitations (e.g. time consumption, attrition rate) in order tomake the method more suitable for application in ecology and conservation. 3. A comprehensive search for studies that have applied the Delphi technique in conservation and environmental management resulted in 36 papers. The Delphi technique has been applied to a range of issues, including developing decision support systems and predicting ecological impacts of climate change. 4. The papers reviewed suggest that the Delphi technique is an efficient, inclusive, systematic and structured approach that can be used to address complex issues. A major strength compared to other group-based techniques is the reduced influence of social pressures among respondents. 5. The Delphi technique is relatively little used and seems undervalued.     A specific nanobody prevents amyloidogenesis of D76N ÎČ2-microglobulin in vitro and modifies its tissue distribution in vivo

    Systemic amyloidosis is caused by misfolding and aggregation of globular proteins in vivo for which effective treatments are urgently needed. Inhibition of protein self-aggregation represents an attractive therapeutic strategy. Studies on the amyloidogenic variant of ÎČ2-microglobulin, D76N, causing hereditary systemic amyloidosis, have become particularly relevant since fibrils are formed in vitro in physiologically relevant conditions. Here we compare the potency of two previously described inhibitors of wild type ÎČ2-microglobulin fibrillogenesis, doxycycline and single domain antibodies (nanobodies). The ÎČ2-microglobulin -binding nanobody, Nb24, more potently inhibits D76N ÎČ2-microglobulin fibrillogenesis than doxycycline with complete abrogation of fibril formation. In ÎČ2-microglobulin knock out mice, the D76N ÎČ2-microglobulin/ Nb24 pre-formed complex, is cleared from the circulation at the same rate as the uncomplexed protein; however, the analysis of tissue distribution reveals that the interaction with the antibody reduces the concentration of the variant protein in the heart but does not modify the tissue distribution of wild type ÎČ2-microglobulin. These findings strongly support the potential therapeutic use of this antibody in the treatment of systemic amyloidosis

    An academic challenge to the entrepreneurial university: the spatial power of the ‘Slow Swimming Club’

The entrepreneurial university is a vague notion that has evolved by applying the concepts of enterprise and entrepreneurship to a university context. The blurring of enterprise with entrepreneurship has allowed the entrepreneurial university to be increasingly underpinned by a managerialist discourse, typified by functionalisation and marketisation; culminating in academic disempowerment, dissatisfaction and subsequent disengagement. In response to such dissatisfaction, this paper reflects on a playful space, called the Slow Swimming Club (SSC), produced by several academics. The research takes a collective auto-ethnographic approach and employs Foucault’s heterotopology, as a conceptual frame, to understand the collective impact of this SSC entrepreneuring space. We relate the disconnection of the SSC to the process of critically connecting academics, back to their universities and consider whether such academic resistance, rooted in play, corporeal sensibility and emancipation, has the potential to enact social change and enhance entrepreneurial potential

    Nanobody-aided crystallization of the transcription regulator PaaR2 from Escherichia coli O157:H7

    paaR2–paaA2–parE2 is a three-component toxin–antitoxin module found in prophage CP-993P of Escherichia coli O157:H7. Transcription regulation of this module occurs via the 123-amino-acid regulator PaaR2, which forms a large oligomeric structure. Despite appearing to be well folded, PaaR2 withstands crystallization, as does its N-terminal DNA-binding domain. Native mass spectrometry was used to screen for nanobodies that form a unique complex and stabilize the octameric structure of PaaR2. One such nanobody, Nb33, allowed crystallization of the protein. The resulting crystals belong to space group F432, with unit-cell parameter a = 317 Å, diffract to 4.0 Å resolution and are likely to contain four PaaR2 monomers and four nanobody monomers in the asymmetric unit. Crystals of two truncates containing the N-terminal helix–turn–helix domain also interact with Nb33, and the corresponding co-crystals diffracted to 1.6 and 1.75 Å resolution

    Understanding how immigrant entrepreneurs view business opportunity formation through ethnicity

    Given that international research is now consistently showing higher rates of entrepreneurial activity from immigrants above native people, research regarding our understanding of how immigrant entrepreneurs view business opportunity formation remains underdeveloped. Based upon a review of the literature, this chapter examines how ethnicity relates to business opportunity formation through constant interactions. It also introduces the Visual Mixed Embeddedness Framework as an empirical lens for understanding the differences in the business opportunity formation process models between immigrant and native entrepreneurs. By explaining how factors and traits from both home and host countries impact upon the immigrant entrepreneurial business activity process, the framework clearly identifies how the concept of ethnicity influences immigrant entrepreneurial opportunity formation activities in different ways. The framework contributes to existing knowledge by offering a novel method for examining the influence on business opportunity formation of ethnicity, the role of home and host countries and variations between immigrant and native entrepreneurs
