    Architecture for one-shot compressive imaging using computer-generated holograms.

    We propose a synchronous implementation of compressive imaging. This method is mathematically equivalent to prevailing sequential methods, but uses a static holographic optical element to create a spatially distributed spot array from which the image can be reconstructed with an instantaneous measurement. We present the holographic design requirements and demonstrate experimentally that the linear algebra of compressed imaging can be implemented with this technique.     Mathematical Modelling of Metabolic Regulation in Aging

    The underlying cellular mechanisms that characterize aging are complex and multifaceted. However, it is emerging that aging could be regulated by two distinct metabolic hubs. These hubs are the pathway defined by the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) and that defined by the NAD+-dependent deacetylase enzyme, SIRT1. Recent experimental evidence suggests that there is crosstalk between these two important pathways; however, the mechanisms underpinning their interaction(s) remains poorly understood. In this review, we propose using computational modelling in tandem with experimentation to delineate the mechanism(s). We briefly discuss the main modelling frameworks that could be used to disentangle this relationship and present a reduced reaction pathway that could be modelled. We conclude by outlining the limitations of computational modelling and by discussing opportunities for future progress in this area

    The health of older Western Australians: The role of age, gender, geographic location, psychological distress, perceived health, tobacco and alcohol

    Purpose: Rates of drinking- and alcohol-related harms among older adults are increasing in most developed nations. The purpose of this paper was to explore the relationship among at-risk alcohol use, smoking, gender, geographical location, self-reported health and psychological well-being among Western Australians aged 65 years and older. Design/methodology/approach: A secondary analysis was conducted of a cross-sectional survey that collected data from 7,804 West Australians aged 65 years and older between 2013 and 2015. Participants were categorised according to the following age groups: young-old (aged 65–74 years), older-old (aged 75–84 years) and oldest-old (aged 85+ years). Findings: Results from a multinomial logistic regression analysis indicated that at-risk drinking decreased with increasing age. Current smokers, males and those males and females who perceived their health to be “excellent” were more likely to report at-risk drinking, as were the oldest-old males who lived in remote communities. Psychological well-being was not a predictor of at-risk drinking. Originality/value: This paper examines drinking behaviour among a diverse population of older Western Australians. The way in which the age groups were segmented is unique, as most studies of older Australian drinking patterns aggregate the older adult population. Some of the authors’ findings support existing literature, whereas the remainder provides unique data about the relationship among at-risk drinking, geographic location and psychological well-being

    Effects of high relative humidity and dry purging on VOCs obtained during breath sampling on common sorbent tubes.

    BACKGROUND:Offline breath analysis by GC-MS requires the use of sorbent traps to concentrate and store volatile compounds. The selection of which sorbent to use and best practices for managing water retention are important considerations to allow for reproducible, untargeted, biomarker discovery in water saturated breath samples. OBJECTIVE:To assess three commonly used sorbent materials for their use in breath volatile sampling and determine how the high relative humidity inherent in such samples effects the capture of volatile compounds of interest. METHODS:TenaxGR, TenaxTA/Carbograph1TD and TenaxTA/Carbograph5TD tubes were selected as they are the most commonly used sorbents in the breath sampling literature. The recovery of 29 compounds in a standard mix loaded using high humidity gas was tested for each sorbent and compared to loading in dry gas. Water retention and dry purge rates were determined. Finally, breath samples were sampled simultaneously on to each sorbent type using the ReCIVA and analysed by TD-GC-MS. RESULTS:All three sorbents exhibited acceptable reproducibility when loaded with the standard mix in dry gas. Loading the standard mix in humid gas led to reduced recovery of compounds based on their chemical properties. Dry purging performance for each sorbent material was assessed and was shown to be 1.14, 1.13 and 0.89 mg H2O min-1for TenaxGR, TenaxTA/Carbograph1TD and TenaxTA/Carbograph5TD respectively. A comparison of breath profiles on different sorbents showed differences in background artefacts (sulfur dioxide, cyclopenten-1-one and 3-nonene) and endogenous breath compounds (2-methyl-furan and furfural). CONCLUSIONS:High relative humidity during sampling reduces the ability of sorbent tubes to capture volatile compounds and could impact method detection limits during breath sampling. Sufficient water to impair accurate analysis was retained on all tubes. Minimal differences were observed between sorbent materials when used to sample breath, however, suggestions are provided for sorbent selection for future studies
