Feline exocrine pancreatic insufficiency : a retrospective study of 150 cases
BACKGROUND : Little information is available about the clinical presentation and response to treatment of cats with exocrine
pancreatic insufficiency (EPI).
OBJECTIVES : To describe the signalment, clinical signs, concurrent diseases, and response to treatment of cats with EPI.
ANIMALS : One hundred and fifty cats with EPI.
METHODS : Retrospective case series.
RESULTS : Questionnaires were sent to 261 veterinarians, and 150 (57%) were returned with data suitable for statistical
analysis. The median age of the cats with EPI was 7.7 years. The median body condition score was 3 of 9. Ninety-two of
119 cats (77%) had hypocobalaminemia, and 56 of 119 cats (47%) had increased and 6 of 119 cats (5%) had decreased
serum folate concentrations. Clinical signs included weight loss (91%), unformed feces (62%), poor hair coat (50%), anorexia
(45%), increased appetite (42%), lethargy (40%), watery diarrhea (28%), and vomiting (19%). Eighty-seven cats
(58%) had concurrent diseases. Treatment response was reported to be good in 60%, partial in 27%, and poor in 13% of
121 cats. Trypsin-like immunoreactivity <4 lg/L was associated with a positive response to treatment (OR, 3.2; 95% CI,
1.5â7.0; P = .004). Also, cobalamin supplementation improved the response to treatment (OR, 3.0; 95% CI, 1.4â6.6;
P = .006).
CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE : Exocrine pancreatic insufficiency in cats often has a different clinical presentation
than in dogs. The age range for EPI in cats is wide, and many cats can be â€5 years of age. Most cats respond well to appropriate
treatment for EPI, and cobalamin supplementation appears to be necessary for a good response.Some of the results of this study were presented at the 2012

Absence of lattice strain anomalies at the electronic topological transition in zinc at high pressure
High pressure structural distortions of the hexagonal close packed (hcp)
element zinc have been a subject of controversy. Earlier experimental results
and theory showed a large anomaly in lattice strain with compression in zinc at
about 10 GPa which was explained theoretically by a change in Fermi surface
topology. Later hydrostatic experiments showed no such anomaly, resulting in a
discrepancy between theory and experiment. We have computed the compression and
lattice strain of hcp zinc over a wide range of compressions using the
linearized augmented plane wave (LAPW) method paying special attention to
k-point convergence. We find that the behavior of the lattice strain is
strongly dependent on k-point sampling, and with large k-point sets the
previously computed anomaly in lattice parameters under compression disappears,

Changes in physical activity during hospital admission for chronic respiratory disease: Inpatient step count does not recover
Background and objectiveEstablishing the amount of inpatient physical activity (PA) undertaken by individuals hospitalized for chronic respiratory disease is needed to inform interventions. This observational study investigated whether PA changes when a person is an inpatient, how long is required to obtain representative PA measures and whether PA varies within a day and between patients of differing lengths of stay.MethodsA total of 389 participants were recruited as early as possible into their hospitalization. Patients wore a PA monitor from recruitment until discharge. Step count was extracted for a range of wear time criteria. Singleâday intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) were calculated, with an ICCââ„â0.80 deemed acceptable.ResultsPA data were available for 259 participants. No changes in daily step count were observed during the inpatient stay (586 (95% CI: 427â744) vs 652 (95% CI: 493â812) steps/day for day 2 and 7, respectively). ICC across all wear time criteria wereâ>â0.80. The most stringent wear time criterion, retaining 80% of the sample, was â„11âh on â„1 day. More steps were taken during the morning and afternoon than overnight and evening. After controlling for the Medical Research Council (MRC) grade or oxygen use, there was no difference in step count between patients admitted for 2â3 days (short stay) and those admitted for 7â14âdays (long stay).ConclusionPatients move little during their hospitalization, and inpatient PA did not increase during their stay. A wear time criterion of 11 waking hours on any single day was representative of the entire admission whilst retaining an acceptable proportion of the initial sample size. Patients may need encouragement to move more during their hospital stay
Effector-triggered defence against apoplastic fungal pathogens

Therefore, it is proposed that this type of resistance is termed âeffector-triggered defenceâ (ETD). Unlike PTI and ETI, ETD is mediated by R genes encoding cell surface-localised receptor-like proteins (RLPs) that engage the receptor-like kinase SOBIR1. In contrast to this extracellular recognition, ETI is initiated by intracellular detection of pathogen effectors. ETI is usually associated with fast, hypersensitive host cell death, whereas ETD often triggers host cell death only after an elapsed period of endophytic pathogen growth. Magnetization steps in a diluted Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain: Theory and experiments on TMMC:Cd
A theory for the equilibrium low-temperature magnetization M of a diluted
Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain is presented. The magnetization curve, M
versus B, is calculated using the exact contributions of finite chains with 1
to 5 spins, and the "rise and ramp approximation" for longer chains. Some
non-equilibrium effects that occur in a rapidly changing B, are also
considered. Specific non-equilibrium models based on earlier treatments of the
phonon bottleneck, and of spin flips associated with cross relaxation and with
level crossings, are discussed. Magnetization data on powders of TMMC diluted
with cadmium [i.e., (CH_3)_4NMn_xCd_(1-x)Cl_3, with 0.16<=x<=0.50 were measured
at 0.55 K in 18 T superconducting magnets. The field B_1 at the first MST from
pairs is used to determine the NN exchange constant, J, which changes from -5.9
K to -6.5 K as x increases from 0.16 to 0.50. The magnetization curves obtained
in the superconducting magnets are compared with simulations based on the
equilibrium theory. Data for the differential susceptibility, dM/dB, were taken
in pulsed magnetic fields (7.4 ms duration) up to 50 T, with the powder samples
in a 1.5 K liquid-helium bath. Non-equilibrium effects, which became more
severe as x decreased, were observed. The non-equilibrium effects are
tentatively interpreted using the "Inadequate Heat Flow Scenario," or to
cross-relaxation, and crossings of energy levels, including those of excited

Finite Temperature Properties of Quantum Antiferromagnets in a Uniform Magnetic Field in One and Two Dimensions
Consider a -dimensional antiferromagnet with a quantum disordered ground
state and a gap to bosonic excitations with non-zero spin. In a finite external
magnetic field, this antiferromagnet will undergo a phase transition to a
ground state with non-zero magnetization, describable as the condensation of a
dilute gas of bosons. The finite temperature properties of the Bose gas in the
vicinity of this transition are argued to obey a hypothesis of ZERO
SCALE-FACTOR UNIVERSALITY for , with logarithmic violations in .

Physical activity monitoring: Addressing the difficulties of accurately detecting slow walking speeds
OBJECTIVE: To test the accuracy of a multi-sensor activity monitor (SWM) in detecting slow walking speeds in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). BACKGROUND: Concerns have been expressed regarding the use of pedometers in patient populations. Although activity monitors are more sophisticated devices, their accuracy at detecting slow walking speeds common in patients with COPD has yet to be proven. METHODS: A prospective observational study design was employed. An incremental shuttle walk test (ISWT) was completed by 57 patients with COPD wearing an SWM. The ISWT was repeated by 20 patients wearing the same SWM. RESULTS: Differences were identified between metabolic equivalents (METS) and between step-count across five levels of the ISWT (p < 0.001). Good within monitor reproducibility between two ISWT was identified for total energy expenditure and step-count (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: The SWM is able to detect slow (standardized) speeds of walking and is an acceptable method for measuring physical activity in individuals disabled by COPD
Crucial Physical Dependencies of the Core-Collapse Supernova Mechanism
We explore with self-consistent 2D F{\sc{ornax}} simulations the dependence
of the outcome of collapse on many-body corrections to neutrino-nucleon cross
sections, the nucleon-nucleon bremsstrahlung rate, electron capture on heavy
nuclei, pre-collapse seed perturbations, and inelastic neutrino-electron and
neutrino-nucleon scattering. Importantly, proximity to criticality amplifies
the role of even small changes in the neutrino-matter couplings, and such
changes can together add to produce outsized effects. When close to the
critical condition the cumulative result of a few small effects (including
seeds) that individually have only modest consequence can convert an anemic
into a robust explosion, or even a dud into a blast. Such sensitivity is not
seen in one dimension and may explain the apparent heterogeneity in the
outcomes of detailed simulations performed internationally. A natural
conclusion is that the different groups collectively are closer to a realistic
understanding of the mechanism of core-collapse supernovae than might have

Should health care professionals encourage living kidney donation?
Living kidney donation provides a promising opportunity in situations where the scarcity of cadaveric kidneys is widely acknowledged. While many patients and their relatives are willing to accept its benefits, others are concerned about living kidney programs; they appear to feel pressured into accepting living kidney transplantations as the only proper option for them. As we studied the attitudes and views of patients and their relatives, we considered just how actively health care professionals should encourage living donation. We argue that active interference in peoplesâ personal lives is justified - if not obligatory. First, we address the ambiguous ideals of non-directivity and value neutrality in counselling. We describe the main pitfalls implied in these concepts, and conclude that these concepts cannot account for the complex reality of living donation and transplantation. We depict what is required instead as truthful information and context-relative counselling. We then consider professional interference into personal belief systems. We argue that individual convictions are not necessarily strong, stable, or deep. They may be flawed in many ways. In order to justify interference in peoplesâ personal lives, it is crucial to understand the structure of these convictions. Evidence suggests that both patients and their relatives have attitudes towards living kidney donation that are often open to change and, accordingly, can be influenced. We show how ethical theories can account for this reality and can help us to discern between justified and unjustified interference. We refer to Stephen Toulminâs model of the structure of logical argument, the Rawlsian model of reflective equilibrium, and Thomas Nagelâs representation of the particularistic position
