    This paper is an abstract from the report of the commission B10: "The influence of the shrinkage of cement on the shrink-age of concrete", of the Netherlands Committee for Concrete Research. Measurements of pulse velocity, volume shrinkage and heat of hydration on hardening portland cement support the idea that the formation of ettringite is an important link in the mechanism of shrinkage in the plastic stage of cement paste and mortar. Mechanical tests on prisms of 4x4x16 cm3 gave some information about the difference in sensitivity to surface corrosion of different types of cement

    ‘It Takes Two Hands to Clap’: How Gaddi Shepherds in the Indian Himalayas Negotiate Access to Grazing

    This article examines the effects of state intervention on the workings of informal institutions that coordinate the communal use and management of natural resources. Specifically it focuses on the case of the nomadic Gaddi shepherds and official attempts to regulate their access to grazing pastures in the Indian Himalayas. It is often predicted that the increased presence of the modern state critically undermines locally appropriate and community-based resource management arrangements. Drawing on the work of Pauline Peters and Francis Cleaver, I identify key instances of socially embedded ‘common’ management institutions and explain the evolution of these arrangements through dynamic interactions between individuals, communities and the agents of the state. Through describing the ‘living space’ of Gaddi shepherds across the annual cycle of nomadic migration with their flocks I explore the ways in which they have been able to creatively reinterpret external interventions, and suggest how contemporary arrangements for accessing pasture at different moments of the annual cycle involve complex combinations of the formal and the informal, the ‘traditional’ and the ‘modern’

    Chloride Anion Controlled Molecular “Switching”. Binding of 2,5,7-Trinitro-9-dicyanomethylenefluorene-C60 by Tetrathiafulvalene Calix[4]pyrrole and Photophysical Generation of Two Different Charge-Separated States

    The binding of the snake-like trinitrodicyanomethylenefluorene-C60 derivative (TNDCF-C60) to the dynamic receptor, tetrathiafulvalene calix[4]pyrrole (TTF-calix[4]pyrrole), may be controlled via the use of a chloride anion as an external trigger. Whereas, in the absence of a chloride anion, the TNDCF ?tail? of the trinitrodicyanomethylenefluorene-C60 substrate binds to the TTF?calix[4]pyrrole in a 2:1 (substrate/receptor) stoichiometry in CH2Cl2 solution, addition of a chloride anion (yellow) leads the TNDCF tail to be displaced in favor of a bound C60 ?head?, a process that leads to the formation of a complex with overall 1:2:2 substrate/receptor/chloride anion stoichiometry. These chemical switching events are reflected in easy-to-visualize color changes, as well as in the production of two different kinds of charge-separated states following selective femtosecond photoexcitation

    Achievement and Aspiration

    In contrast to previous work, our study considers both meaning and mediation factors in the achievement-aspiration relationship. In a sample of graduate students ("academic-career aspirants"), we examine sex differences in the achievement- aspiration relationship as they vary with type of academic achievement and professional aspirations, and as it is mediated by individuals' perceptions of their professional roles and their faculty's support. We find: (1) Women's achievement-aspiration conversion is different from, but not necessarily lower than, men's. Rather, the strength and direction of the relationship vary with aspiration type (traditional versus alternative) and, to some extent, with specific types of academic achievement (e.g., paper publication and GPA). (2) The mediators of the achievement-aspiration relationship also vary by sex and aspiration type.     Assessing the impacts of sewage sludge amendment containing nano-TiO2 on tomato plants: A life cycle study

    Increasing evidence indicates the presence of engineered nanoparticles (ENPs) in sewage sludge derived from wastewater treatment. Land application of sewage sludge is, therefore, considered as an important pathway for ENP transfer to the environment. The aim of this work was to understand the effects of sewage sludge containing nano-TiO2 on plants (tomato) when used as an amendment in agricultural soil. We assessed developmental parameters for the entire plant life cycle along with metabolic and bio-macromolecule changes and titanium accumulation in plants. The results suggest that the sewage sludge amendment containing nano-TiO2 increased plant growth (142% leaf biomass, 102% fruit yield), without causing changes in biochemical responses, except for a 43% decrease in leaf tannin concentration. Changes in elemental concentrations (mainly Fe, B, P, Na, and Mn) of plant stem, leaves and, to a lesser extent fruits were observed. Fourier-transformed infrared analysis showed maximum changes in plant leaves (decrease in tannins and lignins and increase in carbohydrates) but no change in fruits. No significant Ti enrichment was detected in tomato fruits. In conclusion, we evidenced no acute toxicity to plants and no major implication for food safety after one plant life cycle exposure

    Existence of Weak Solutions for a Diffuse Interface Model for Two-Phase Flows of Incompressible Fluids with Different Densities

    We prove existence of weak solutions for a diffuse interface model for the flow of two viscous incompressible Newtonian fluids in a bounded domain in two and three space dimensions. In contrast to previous works, we study a new model recently developed by Abels, Garcke, and Gr\"un for fluids with different densities, which leads to a solenoidal velocity field. The model is given by a non-homogeneous Navier-Stokes system with a modified convective term coupled to a Cahn-Hilliard system.     Binding studies of tetrathiafulvalene-calix[4]pyrroles with electron-deficient guests

    The neutral meso-octamethylporphyrinogen derivative, tetraTTF-calix[4]pyrrole 1 (TTF=tetrathiafulvalene), acts as a multi-faceted receptor in that it interacts with an assortment of different guests in different ways. The conformation of receptor 1 can be reversibly switched between the 1,3-alternate conformation (i.e., 1, Fig. 1) and the cone conformation (i.e., 1·Cl−, Fig. 2) by the repetitive addition of chloride and sodium ions. In this paper, the results of detailed and systematic complexation studies involving both 1 and its chloride-bound complex, 1·Cl−, with a variety of guests are described. Receptor 1 binds quasi-planar nitroaromatic guests in its 1,3-alternate conformation, while release of these guests takes place upon addition of chloride anions. On the other hand, spherical fullerene guests are strongly bound by 1·Cl−. Finally, it was found that a bidentate guest, consisting of a quasi-planar 2,5,7-trinitro-9-dicyanomethylenefluorene moiety tethered to a spherical C60 fullerene, could be recognized by receptor 1 in either its 1,3-alternate or its chloride-bound cone conformation, albeit through very different binding modes
