    Chicken egg white — characteristics of its properties and the prospects for functional foods development

    The overview presents the literature data and the results of our own research on prospects of using the chicken eggs as the basis of functional foods. The composition of chicken eggs and their components, characteristics of egg white proteins properties are presented thereto. The biologically active compounds included into egg composition are analyzed. The data on the biological value of egg white are given. The characteristic of egg white foaming ability is presented. It has been shown that the ability of proteins to form stable intermolecular structures, especially with partially denaturated proteins, allows them forming viscoelastic superficial films that ensure foam stability. The high foaming ability of chicken egg protein macromolecules is directly related to their interphase properties, i. e. the ability to form interphase layers at the “liquid —  gas” interface. The foaming properties of the various egg proteins are not equal, and therefore they contribute to foaming properties at various extents. The model of egg white proteins gelation is considered and the factors influencing the gelation process are described. It has been shown that very important changes in proteins properties are caused by denaturation. The proteins lose their ability to hydrate; the protective aqueous shell around the globules disappears, the proteins stick together, grow larger and lose solubility. This process is called coagulation. The influence of denaturation and aggregation on variations of protein properties is described below. Data on protein fortification with functional ingredients (calcium, iodine, plant polyphenols) and creation of functional egg and meat foods are presented here

    Combustion behaviour of some biodesulphurized coals assessed by TGA/DTA

    Thermal analysis, i.e. TGA/DTA is used to study the changes in the combustion behaviour of microbially treated coals. In view of their high sulphur content and industrial significance three samples are under consideration, i.e. one lignite and two subbituminous from different region in Bulgaria. The differences in burning profiles can be related to structural changes resulted from biological treatments. The overall biological treatment generates these changes probably due to the oxidation process. Concerning organic sulphur biodesulphurization there is no change in any drastic mannerof the thermal characteristic parameters. In general, applied biotreatments provoke a complex influence on combustion coal behaviour. From one side a better ignition performance, a minor decrease in higher heating value and diminishing peak temperature of maximum weight loss rate for all biotreated samples are observed. From other side some decrease in the combustibility indicated by an increase in the combustion time and the end of combustion temperature are obvious. Also well determined decrease of self-heating temperature after biotreatments evolves high risk of spontaneous unmanageable coal combustion

    The changes in the amino and fatty acid profiles in the semifinished foodstuffs based on broiler meat and components of chicken eggs after different types of thermal treatment

    The changes in the amino and fatty acid profiles in the semifinished foodstuffs (SFFs) based on broiler meat and coagulated chicken egg melange after different types of thermal treatment (water or steam boiling, braising, baking, frying) were studied. The amino acid profiles were determined on Knauer analyzer; tryptophan by standard method. The biological value of the treated products was assessed using amino acid balance coefficients calculated by the method of N. N. Lipatov. It was found that the changes in the initial amino acid profiles of the SFFs were the least after water and steam boiling; braising and baking were found to increase the contents of the essential amino acids. The amino acid profiles in the treated SFFs were close to the reference values. The best criteria of their biological value (coefficient of rationality of amino acid composition, comparable redundance) were found after water and steam boiling. It was found that all types of thermal treatments insignificantly affected the parameters of fatty acid balance within the SFFs; the changes found were primarily related to slight increase in total content of saturated fatty acids and increase in total content of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) in compare to initial profiles, by 2.64–3.88% depending on the treatment type.     A Giant Hand Lipoma As a Rare Cause of Secondary Carpal Tunnel Syndrome - a Case Report

    Introduction: Lipomas are a rare cause of compressive neuropathy and they lead to atypical clinical presentation that can mimic carpal tunnel syndrome. Case presentation: The authors describe a rare presentation of a carpal tunnel syndrome recurrence after a hand giant lipoma, presenting with rapidly compression neuropathy of the median nerve, 6 months after de primary surgery. Discussion: Lipomas are common benign soft tumours. Their occurrence in the hand remains rare and they rarely cause secondary entrapment neuropathies. Carpal tunnel syndrome is mostly idiopathic and bilateral. Local factors should be suspected when these neuropathies present with atypical symptomatology or even when they recur after primary conventional surgical release.     Necrolytic migratory erythema: complete healing after surgical removal of pancreatic carcinoma

    Necrolytic migratory erythema is considered an obligatory cutaneous paraneoplastic sign associated with glucagonoma. Glucagonoma syndrome is defined by the presence of an alpha-cell secreting tumor of the pancreas, elevated levels of glucagon, and a characteristic rash called necrolytic migratory erythema. Although necrolytic migratory erythema is a specific finding in glucagonoma syndrome, it may occur in other settings, unassociated with an alpha-cell pancreatic tumor (pseudoglucagonoma syndrome). The rarity of glucagonoma imposes a challenge, with most patients being diagnosed after a long period of treatment for their skin rash. The main prognostic sign of glucagonoma are the subsequent metastases that come late in the course of the disease. Herein, we present a 55-year-old female patient with a 5-year history of unrecognized cutaneous and systemic manifestations of glucagonoma syndrome. Based on the investigations, the diagnosis of glucagonoma syndrome without metastases was established. After surgical removal of pancreatic carcinoma/glucagonoma, complete healing and a long disease-free period was achieved. Appropriate awareness of the characteristics of necrolytic migratory erythema in physicians/dermatologists often leads to an early diagnosis of glucagonoma syndrome and enhances the chances of a favorable outcome.healing and long disease-free period was achieved.     ON ТНЕ ROLE OF EXOGENOUS AND EXOCEREBRAL FACTORS IN ТНЕ OCCURRENCE OF PSYCHOSES IN PRESENILE AGE AND SENILIТY

    With the inсrеаsе of mеаn duration of life in mаn, аn ever increasing medical аnd social importance is attached to the problem of the psychoses in presenile and senile age. Prophylaxis of these disorders is closely соnnесtеd with the detection of exogenous аnd exocerebral injuries which take part in their geinesis.Clinical аnd dispensary observations (including an inquiry оn social coпditions) werе carried out in 155 individuals suffering from presenile аnd senile psychoses (of them 110 with involutive, 35 with vascular аnd 10 - with senile psychoses), as а control served the clinical iпvestigation аnd the inquiry on social conditions of 100 individuals (with nо psychotic traits) in 2 senility homes (48 of them displayed cerebral arteriosclerosis andblооd hypertension and 52 - without any vascular disorders). The females prevail among patients with psychoses (95:60); this difference is exclusively due to involutive psychoses. Соnсеrning the age at onset, 70% of the involutive psychoses have occurred in the age - under 60 years, whereas most of the vascular psychoses - ovеr 60 years

    Dwarf Copper-Gold Porphyry Deposits of the Buchim-Damjan-Borov Dol Ore District, Republic of Macedonia (FYROM)

    The metallogenic aspects, tectonic setting, magmatism, structure, and composition of Au-and Ag-bearing porphyry copper deposits in the Buchim-Damjan-Borov Dol ore district and their genetic features are considered and compared with earlier published data. Special attention is paid to supergene gold in heavy concentrate halos of the Borov Dol deposit. The total Cu reserves of the deposits discussed in this paper do not exceed 150 kt. The Buchim deposit likely is the world's smallest deposit of this type currently involved in mining. A comprehensive study of these dwarf porphyry copper deposits is undertaken to answer questions on the conditions of their formation. How do they differ from formation conditions of giant deposits

    Mesenchymal Stem Cells in a Transgenic Mouse Model of Multiple System Atrophy: Immunomodulation and Neuroprotection

    Mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) are currently strong candidates for cell-based therapies. They are well known for their differentiation potential and immunoregulatory properties and have been proven to be potentially effective in the treatment of a large variety of diseases, including neurodegenerative disorders. Currently there is no treatment that provides consistent long-term benefits for patients with multiple system atrophy (MSA), a fatal late onset α-synucleinopathy. Principally neuroprotective or regenerative strategies, including cell-based therapies, represent a powerful approach for treating MSA. In this study we investigated the efficacy of intravenously applied MSCs in terms of behavioural improvement, neuroprotection and modulation of neuroinflammation in the (PLP)-αsynuclein (αSYN) MSA model.MSCs were intravenously applied in aged (PLP)-αSYN transgenic mice. Behavioural analyses, defining fine motor coordination and balance capabilities as well as stride length analysis, were performed to measure behavioural outcome. Neuroprotection was assessed by quantifying TH neurons in the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNc). MSC treatment on neuroinflammation was analysed by cytokine measurements (IL-1α, IL-2, IL-4, IL-5, IL-6, IL-10, IL-17, GM-CSF, INFγ, MCP-1, TGF-β1, TNF-α) in brain lysates together with immunohistochemistry for T-cells and microglia. Four weeks post MSC treatment we observed neuroprotection in the SNc, as well as downregulation of cytokines involved in neuroinflammation. However, there was no behavioural improvement after MSC application.To our knowledge this is the first experimental approach of MSC treatment in a transgenic MSA mouse model. Our data suggest that intravenously infused MSCs have a potent effect on immunomodulation and neuroprotection. Our data warrant further studies to elucidate the efficacy of systemically administered MSCs in transgenic MSA models
