This essay intends to resume and deepen the ancient reciprocity of values between sports ethics and Christian life. Sport and Christianity are two phenomena which have remote origins. Both of them have influenced each other reciprocally in many occasions through the contact between the original cultures and they are today globalized all over the world. Among the many arguments the question arises whether Catholicism can contribute today to restore the original epistemological statute of sports sciences for a rediscovery of the most authentic sport (without doping, corruption, betting, lack of fair play, excess of technicality and economic investments, etc.) in order to become a fundamental resource for the education of the new generations, on the base of the evangelical and at the same time rational principle: “not man for sport, but sport for man”. Sport, as an educational vehicle with widespread diffusion, is on the same wavelength of the Christian message for the same reason that the essence of real sport shares the majority of Christian values and its practical dimension allows to stage, in real terms, the ‘game field’ in which those values can be reached.

Objectives: To find any possible relationships between dimensions of state body image (SBI), physical self-description (PSD) and body mass index (BMI). Methods: Body Image States Scale (BISS) and Physical Self-Description Questionnaire (PSDQ) were administrated to 280 students (143 girls and 137 boys) aged between 14 and 18 years (M = 16.86; SD = 1.28). Participants answered also a demographic form. Written informed consent was obtained from all participants and their parents. The study was based on a cross-sectional research design. Appropriate statistical analyzes (such as the correlation circle) were conducted on the data to verify the hypotheses of the study. Results: Pearson’s r correlations and the correlation circle have shown multiple correlations between variables, some of which have been very strong and significant (r closed to 1; p<.0001), so much so that areas of overlap between survey instruments could be identified. Conclusions: Possible areas of overlap between the questionnaires that measure the dimensions of the SBI and those of the PSD, and also BMI have been identified (e.g., appearance BISS – appearance PSDQ; obesity BISS – obesity PSDQ – BMI).Obiettivi: Trovare eventuali possibili relazioni tra le dimensioni dell’immagine corporea di stato (SBI), l’auto-descrizione del sé fisico (PSD) e l’indicedi massa corporea (IMC).

Fitting age-specific fertility rates by a skew-symmetric probability density function

Mixture probability density functions had recently been proposed to describe some fertility patterns characterized by a bi-modal shape. These mixture probability density functions appear to be adequate when the fertility pattern is actually bi-modal but less useful when the shape of age-specific fertility rates is unimodal. A further model is proposed based on skew-symmetric probability density functions. This model is both more parsimonious than mixture distributions and more flexible, showing a good fit with several shapes (bi-modal or unimodal) of fertility patterns

Dynamic modeling of mortality via mixtures of skewed distribution functions

There has been growing interest on forecasting mortality. In this article, we propose a novel dynamic Bayesian approach for modeling and forecasting the age-at-death distribution, focusing on a three-components mixture of a Dirac mass, a Gaussian distribution and a Skew-Normal distribution. According to the specified model, the age-at-death distribution is characterized via seven parameters corresponding to the main aspects of infant, adult and old-age mortality. The proposed approach focuses on coherent modeling of multiple countries, and following a Bayesian approach to inference we allow to borrow information across populations and to shrink parameters towards a common mean level, implicitly penalizing diverging scenarios. Dynamic modeling across years is induced trough an hierarchical dynamic prior distribution that allows to characterize the temporal evolution of each mortality component and to forecast the age-at-death distribution. Empirical results on multiple countries indicate that the proposed approach outperforms popular methods for forecasting mortality, providing interpretable insights on the evolution of mortality

This contribution originates from the reflections that took place in a fruitful scientific and correspondence debate with the pioneer Umberto Margiotta. The speculative path that follows takes its cue from a basic question: “what is the transcendental nature of formative intersubjectivity and the practices it establishes?” (Minello & Margiotta 2011, p. 25), in an attempt to be able to account for the way in which even the ontology of the motor science domain is constituted on theoretical iuxta propria principia as a rigorous epistemic domain. Thus a path of analysis, reflection and deepening of a large part of Western philosophy on the subject in question is undertaken, with particular reference to phenomenology and ‘post-phenomenology’, with the aim of reaching a foundational explanation of the sports sciences as a unitary disciplinary sector, albeit interconnected with many other scientific knowledges, in a profound reflection on the transcendental question of pedagogy, training and teaching in motor sciences, deepening some crucial themes intimately linked to it such as: intentionality, intersubjectivity, and incarnation.

From nonlocal to local Cahn-Hilliard equation

In this paper we prove the convergence of a nonlocal version of the Cahn-Hilliard equation to its local counterpart as the nonlocal convolution kernel is scaled using suitable approximations of a Dirac delta in a periodic boundary conditions setting. This convergence result strongly relies on the dynamics of the problem. More precisely, the H1H^{-1}-gradient flow structure of the equation allows to deduce uniform H1H^1 estimates for solutions of the nonlocal Cahn-Hilliard equation and, together with a Poincar\'e type inequality by Ponce, provides the compactness argument that allows to prove the convergence result.Comment: 13 page
