    The Pathophysiological Process of Sepsis

    Sepsis is a medical emergency and can be a life-threatening illness that results as a complication from a severe infection, which occurs when chemicals that have been released into the bloodstream by the body’s defense system work to fight off an infection (Mayo Clinic, 2016). Sepsis is one of the leading causes of deaths in patients in the hospital setting worldwide, becoming more common than breast and bowel cancer combined (Nursing Times, 2014). Sepsis can affect anyone; however it is more common in the elderly or in individuals with weaker immune systems. Health care providers (HCPs) must fully understand this disease process to assure that proper treatment is being implemented. At the national level, morbidity rates for sepsis range from 25 to 50 percent, and more than 220,000 people in the United States die from this illness each year (Butcher, 2016).     An Examination of the Identification of Student Veterans within the University System of Georgia to Assist in the Decision-Making Process to Better Serving Them

    Within the USG, no systematic approach exists regarding the identification of its student veterans. In support of the significant number of veterans living in Georgia and more of them utilizing VA educational benefits, the purpose of the research was to explore the various means in which USG institutions identify student veterans and use this information to make data-driven decisions as well as establish retention and graduation rates. The research included surveying and interviewing, following theoretical sampling. Interviews were conducted to obtain more comprehensive and detailed information on the survey results where participants indicated the identification of student veterans, use of data related to the identification of student veterans, and offering transitional resources for the purpose of increase academic success. Grounded theory approach was used to generate a theory following the collection of survey data and using theoretical sampling to determine institutions for involved in the interview process. Quantitative data were analyzed for descriptive statistics with the qualitative data subjected to a multi-level approach of open, axial, and selective coding. Key findings included an inventory of the transitional resources offered within the USG, the extent of retention and graduation tracking within the USG, and the awareness of the various means within the USG for recording student veteran identification. The grounded theory proposed for student veteran identification in a consistent manner among USG institutions include the use of select Banner screens for specific purposes and verifying or confirming the identification for accuracy. Complete and thorough veteran status identification will provide a basis for generating reports for data-driven decisions

    A project report submitted to the Faculty of Engineering, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Engineerrng,As has happened throughout the world. environmental and water quality problems related to developing urban and industrial areas and associated accumulation of waste in built-up areas were the main factors in contributing to sanitary awareness in South Africa. The dwindling water resources and persistent deterioration of water quality, more severely in urban areas, necessitates the review the current practice of storm water management in South Africa. Reliable stormwater drainage models evaluating both the water quantity and quality could be essential in confronting the prevailing pollution problems. The objective of this project was conceived to be the development of a system for the simulation of water quality in urban watercourses, A personal computer compatible model for joint transportation of hydrograph and pollutographs in open channels was developed. The model comprises an operational data handling facility, a user friendly and interactive interface. The study revealed that: Urban and Industrial development results in complication of the urban water system. • Single objectivity approaches in management of urban watercourses are outdated . .. The proposed model is capable of simultaneously routing flood and pollutant condiment waves in open channels. Understanding of aspects of the water quality in urban watercourse can be greatly enhanced by the proposed model.     Orientador: Celso Kazuyuki MorookaDissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Faculdade de Engenharia Mecânica e Instituto de GeociênciasResumo: O presente trabalho propõe um procedimento para calcular a probabilidade de falha por fadiga em um SCR (Steel Catenary Riser), identificando os principais parâmetros e avaliando a influência destes na probabilidade desse tipo de falha. São consideradas nesse procedimento as condições oceanográficas, tais como esforços de ondas, correntezas e movimentos da plataforma, e as incertezas presentes no dano acumulado total à fadiga ¿ dado pela regra de Miner-Palmgren. A metodologia adotada é probabilística e se baseia no Método de Confiabilidade de Primeira Ordem (FORM). Uma função de falha para o SCR é definida considerando-se a resistência e os carregamentos aplicados no riser, a aleatoriedade das condições oceanográficas e as características mecânicas do SCR. Neste trabalho, o procedimento proposto foi implementado em um programa comercial e aplicado para um caso reportado na literatura e para outro caso, considerando dados obtidos via Petrobras, de um campo marítimo brasileiro em operação. Os resultados de probabilidade de falha por fadiga, bem como de vida útil, são discutidos e avaliados para diferentes localizações ao longo do comprimento do SCR. Estes resultados mostraram-se bons quando comparados com os resultados encontrados na literatura. Através destes resultados verificou-se a sensibilidade da probabilidade de falha por fadiga para os principais parâmetros, sendo o parâmetro m da curva S-N o mais influente.Abstract: The current work presents a procedure to evaluate the probability of fatigue failure for an offshore Steel Catenary Riser (SCR), through identification and assessment of the influence of the main parameters involved in the probability of failure due to fatigue mechanism. Ocean conditions such as waves, currents and platform motions, as well as uncertainties due to total cumulative damage given by Miner-Palmgren¿s rule, are considered in this procedure. A probabilistic methodology is adopted, which is based on the First Order Reliability Method (FORM). A failure function for the SCR is defined considering the structural strength and the loads acting on the riser, as well as the random nature of ocean conditions and mechanical properties of the SCR. The suggested procedure was implemented and applied for two practical cases. The first case uses data from literature and the second one considers data from a typical Brazilian offshore operation field by Petrobras. In the calculations, results for the probability of failure are, as well as the riser service life, discussed and assessed at different locations along the SCR length. Good results were obtained from the analysis as they are comparable and very close to the results observed in literature. From those results, the sensitivity of the probability of failure due to fatigue for a SCR could be verified.     Para um (re)uso da estação ferroviária de Torredeita

    Dissertação de mestrado integrado em ArquiteturaSituada na freguesia de Torredeita, em Viseu, insere-se uma antiga estação ferroviária que servia a Linha do Dão com princípio e fim nas cidades de Viseu e Santa Comba Dão, desativada definitivamente no ano de 1988. Esta ação levou ao abandono e esquecimento de todas as estações adjacentes à linha perdendo totalmente as suas funções. Nas últimas décadas, algumas destas estações foram albergando novos projetos que depois de várias tentativas conseguiram prevalecer. No entanto, a estação de Torredeita continua, até hoje, sem qualquer tipo de função ou uso. Porém, o aparecimento da Ecopista do Dão, com o propósito de reavivar as memórias pertencentes à antiga Linha Ferroviária, abriu um largo leque de oportunidades para projetos de reabilitação destas antigas estações ao longo da sua estrutura. Atualmente, a composição que define o caso de estudo é preservada pela Fundação Joaquim dos Santos, que, após várias tentativas de adotar uma função aos volumes, acabou por desistir do objetivo devido à fraca adesão da população, demonstrando indícios de constante vandalismo. Esta dissertação pretende, então, realizar uma análise global das estações ao longo da Linha no seu estado atual e, finalmente, focar numa proposta de reabilitação com nova função para a antiga estação de Torredeita, com argumentos que possam servir a freguesia em si, e também a macro estrutura que é a Ecopista do Dão, que se tornou não só numa mais valia para a região com a emergência de várias oportunidade de negócio, como também conseguiu trazer para o interior do país vários turistas ao longo de todo o ano. O projeto ambiciona apresentar uma proposta de reabilitação que, apesar de contratar uma função completamente diferente do antigo, não pretende descaracterizar os volumes ou destruir por completo as suas memórias.Located in the parish of Torredeita, in Viseu, is inserted an old railway station that served the Dão Line with start and end in the city of Viseu and Santa Comba Dão, permanently disabled in 1988. This action led to the abandonment and forgetfulness of all stations adjacent to the line completely losing their functions. In recent decades, some of these stations have been hosting new projects that after several attempts were able to prevail, however, the Torredeita station continues today without any function or use, however, with the emergence of the Dão Ecopista with the concept of reviving the memories of the old railway line, a wide range of opportunities for rehabilitation projects of these old stations has been opened along the structure. Currently, the composition that defines the case study is preserved by the Joaquim dos Santos Foundation, which after several attempts to sweeten a function to the volumes, eventually gave up the objective due to the poor adherence of the population, showing signs of constant vandalism. This dissertation intends to perform a global analysis of the stations along the line in its current state and finally focus on a rehabilitation proposal with new function for the old Torredeita station, with arguments that may serve the parish itself, but also the macro structure Dão Ecopista, which has become not only an asset for the region with the emergence of several business opportunities, but has also managed to bring several tourists to the interior of the country throughout the year. The project aims to present a rehabilitation proposal that despite hiring a completely different function from the old one, does not intend to decharacterize the volumes or completely destroy their memories
