« Hippocrate aux Archives » : écrire l’histoire de la médecine, de l’Antiquité à nos jours

International audienceThe history of medicine hesitated a long time between the glorious chronicle of the eminent doctors and/or the great discoveries and the analysis of the therapeutic strategies revealing of sociocultural relationship between the sick body and that we can call cure authorities (physician, hospital, State, etc.). Today, one can affirm that “Hippocrates is going back to the Archives” by giving rise to information networks, specialized scientific reviews and especially works asking the essential questions on the subject: which temporality? which glance on the past ? which reading of inevitably normative sources?

Impact of Ageing on Curative Health Care Workforce in Selected EU Countries

Population ageing combined with a shrinking potential workforce are main factors influencing future socio-economic development and the labour market. This paper has the objective to show the impact of population change on one important sector of the economy, the health care market. As the need for health care services increases with age, the population ageing is expected to have a direct influence on the demand for services and the workforce needed. The shrinking labour force and the currently high share of elderly health professionals will have an impact of the future supply of health workforce. Based on the NEUJOBS demographic scenarios tough and friendly and age- and gender specific utilization rates the changes in the health workforce needed are calculated. Changes in labour supply and employment are shown using the results of the econometric model NEMESIS. In both scenario a decline in population size and an ageing of the population is expected. In the friendly scenario the demand for health care services is expected to increase, although the population size declines. The population ageing has a higher effect on the demand as the shrinking population size. In the tough scenario the significant decline in population dominates the demand for health workforce. Due to the demographic change also a decline in labour supply is calculated, while the employment in health care is estimated to increase in both scenarios. In 2025, the estimated employment is higher than the demand for health workforce. But on the demand side the calculations show only the pure demographic effect. Due to data restrictions we could not take into account the technological medical progress, changes in health utilization behaviour or changes in health status of the population. All these factor have an influence on the future health workforce demand. This publication was produced as part of the NEUJOBS project, funded by the European Commission through the 7th Framework Programme under contract no. 266833 (http://www.neujobs)

To Get a Job in a Broadway Chorus, Go into Your Dance: Education for Careers in Musical Theatre Dance

The purpose of this study was to identify necessary education and experiences for dancers who wish to pursue a career in musical theatre dance and identify the content dancers who want to pursue careers in musical theatre dance should be studying. In this project, two groups of individuals were surveyed about their education and experiences. These individuals were those with dance degrees, and those working professionally in musical theatre as dancers or choreographers. A total of 174 subjects participated in the study. Of these participants, ninety-two were dance degree holders and eighty-two were musical theatre dance professionals. Two surveys were designed and used to answer the questions of this research study. Both quantitative and qualitative methods were used to analyze data in this study. An analysis of the data suggested there was a great variety in musical theatre dance content currently being offered in undergraduate dance programs. Some programs offered higher level course work in tap, jazz, and Broadway styles while other programs did not offer those genres at all. In addition to the dance technique offerings, dance history and composition and choreography courses included a wide range of content throughout different undergraduate programs. Even when Broadway dance styles were included in these courses, there was little consistency in content offered across different collegiate programs. Based on answers to the survey questions, some but not all participants experienced high levels of career readiness for musical theatre dance professions after participation in undergraduate degree programs in dance, musical theatre programs, or with no degree at all. Thus, it seemed there was no clear educational path for musical theatre dancers. The great majority of participants in the study sought outside training and experiences to supplement their undergraduate education. The wide variety in educational programming and the different amounts of outside experience and training of participants led to the conclusion that the degree programs could not be credited for career success in musical theatre dance. There was an overwhelmingly positive response to the survey and a fairly high rate of completion. The number who completed the survey might have been higher if there had been a greater personal reason or benefit for participating. Limitations to the study included unintentional bias towards musical theatre dance professionals who participated in college programs. No data was collected about years active in professional careers or years in undergraduate programs. Participants placed themselves in either category of the survey—as dance degree holders or musical theatre dance professionals. The researcher did not require proof that respondents had a degree in dance, or the level at which they worked professionally

Fangirls : more than just screaming teenagers

Artists and storytellers continuously produce new media because of the fans that support them. Fangirls are a particularly powerful subset of fans. Through a video essay, I explore the definition of a fangirl, the evolution of fangirls and why they should be treated with respect. I specifically explore fangirls of Franz Liszt, The Beatles, and One Direction. I find that all of these fangirls throughout the years have been seen as hysterical and silly; their interests are not taken seriously. I argue that fandom plays a positive role in young girls’ lives, and it should be encouraged. Further, I argue that everyone should find the fangirl within themselves.Honors CollegeThesis (B.?
