The Hubble Space Telescope Cluster Supernova Survey: II. The Type Ia Supernova Rate in High-Redshift Galaxy Clusters
We report a measurement of the Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) rate in galaxy
clusters at 0.9 < z < 1.45 from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Cluster
Supernova Survey. This is the first cluster SN Ia rate measurement with
detected z > 0.9 SNe. Finding 8 +/- 1 cluster SNe Ia, we determine a SN Ia rate
of 0.50 +0.23-0.19 (stat) +0.10-0.09 (sys) SNuB (SNuB = 10^-12 SNe L_{sun,B}^-1
yr^-1). In units of stellar mass, this translates to 0.36 +0.16-0.13 (stat)
+0.07-0.06 (sys) SNuM (SNuM = 10^-12 SNe M_sun^-1 yr^-1). This represents a
factor of approximately 5 +/- 2 increase over measurements of the cluster rate
at z < 0.2. We parameterize the late-time SN Ia delay time distribution with a
power law (proportional to t^s). Under the assumption of a cluster formation
redshift of z_f = 3, our rate measurement in combination with lower-redshift
cluster SN Ia rates constrains s = -1.41 +0.47/-0.40, consistent with
measurements of the delay time distribution in the field. This measurement is
generally consistent with expectations for the "double degenerate" scenario and
inconsistent with some models for the "single degenerate" scenario predicting a
steeper delay time distribution at large delay times. We check for
environmental dependence and the influence of younger stellar populations by
calculating the rate specifically in cluster red-sequence galaxies and in
morphologically early-type galaxies, finding results similar to the full
cluster rate. Finally, the upper limit of one host-less cluster SN Ia detected
in the survey implies that the fraction of stars in the intra-cluster medium is
less than 0.47 (95% confidence), consistent with measurements at lower

Fundamental Strings, Holography, and Nonlinear Superconformal Algebras
We discuss aspects of holography in the AdS_3 \times S^p near string geometry
of a collection of straight fundamental heterotic strings. We use anomalies and
symmetries to determine general features of the dual CFT. The symmetries
suggest the appearance of nonlinear superconformal algebras, and we show how
these arise in the framework of holographic renormalization methods. The
nonlinear algebras imply intricate formulas for the central charge, and we show
that in the bulk these correspond to an infinite series of quantum gravity
corrections. We also makes some comments on the worldsheet sigma-model for
strings on AdS_3\times S^2, which is the holographic dual geometry of parallel
heterotic strings in five dimensions.Comment: 25 page
Improving the practicality of using non-aversive handling methods to reduce background stress and anxiety in laboratory mice
Handling can stimulate stress and anxiety in laboratory animals that negatively impacts welfare
and introduces a confounding factor in many areas of research. Picking up mice by the tail is a major
source of handling stress that results in strong aversion to the handler, while mice familiarised with
being picked up in a tunnel or cupped on the open hand show low stress and anxiety, and actively seek
interaction with their handlers. Here we investigate the duration and frequency of handling required for
effective familiarisation with these non-aversive handling methods, and test whether this is sufficient
to prevent aversion and anxiety when animals then experience immobilisation and a mild procedure
(subcutaneous injection). Very brief handling (2 s) was sufficient to familiarise mice with tunnel
handling, even when experienced only during cage cleaning. Brief but more frequent handling was
needed for familiarisation with cup handling, while pick up by tail induced strong aversion even when
handling was brief and infrequent. Experience of repeated immobilisation and subcutaneous injection
did not reverse the positive effects of tunnel handling. Our findings demonstrate that replacing tail with
tunnel handling during routine cage cleaning and procedures provides a major refinement with little if
any cost for familiarisation
The CatWISE Preliminary Catalog: Motions from WISE and NEOWISE Data
CatWISE is a program to catalog sources selected from combined WISE and NEOWISE all-sky survey data at 3.4 and 4.6 μm (W1 and W2). The CatWISE Preliminary Catalog consists of 900,849,014 sources measured in data collected from 2010 to 2016. This data set represents four times as many exposures and spans over 10 times as large a time baseline as that used for the AllWISE Catalog. CatWISE adapts AllWISE software to measure the sources in coadded images created from six-month subsets of these data, each representing one coverage of the inertial sky, or epoch. The catalog includes the measured motion of sources in eight epochs over the 6.5 yr span of the data. From comparison to Spitzer, signal-to-noise ratio = 5 limits in magnitudes in the Vega system are W1 = 17.67 and W2 = 16.47, compared to W1 = 16.96 and W2 = 16.02 for AllWISE. From comparison to Gaia, CatWISE positions have typical accuracies of 50 mas for stars at W1 = 10 mag and 275 mas for stars at W1 = 15.5 mag. Proper motions have typical accuracies of 10 mas yr⁻¹ and 30 mas yr⁻¹ for stars with these brightnesses, an order of magnitude better than from AllWISE. Behavioral, Ecological, and Evolutionary Aspects of Meat-Eating by Sumatran Orangutans (Pongo abelii)
Meat-eating is an important aspect of human evolution, but how meat became a substantial component of the human diet is still poorly understood. Meat-eating in our closest relatives, the great apes, may provide insight into the emergence of this trait, but most existing data are for chimpanzees. We report 3 rare cases of meat-eating of slow lorises, Nycticebus coucang, by 1 Sumatran orangutan mother–infant dyad in Ketambe, Indonesia, to examine how orangutans find slow lorises and share meat. We combine these 3 cases with 2 previous ones to test the hypothesis that slow loris captures by orangutans are seasonal and dependent on fruit availability. We also provide the first (to our knowledge) quantitative data and high-definition video recordings of meat chewing rates by great apes, which we use to estimate the minimum time necessary for a female Australopithecus africanus to reach its daily energy requirements when feeding partially on raw meat. Captures seemed to be opportunistic but orangutans may have used olfactory cues to detect the prey. The mother often rejected meat sharing requests and only the infant initiated meat sharing. Slow loris captures occurred only during low ripe fruit availability, suggesting that meat may represent a filler fallback food for orangutans. Orangutans ate meat more than twice as slowly as chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes), suggesting that group living may function as a meat intake accelerator in hominoids. Using orangutan data as a model, time spent chewing per day would not require an excessive amount of time for our social ancestors (australopithecines and hominids), as long as meat represented no more than a quarter of their diet
Association of TMPRSS2-ERG gene fusion with clinical characteristics and outcomes: results from a population-based study of prostate cancer
Background: The presence of the TMPRSS2-ERG fusion gene in prostate tumors has recently been associated with an aggressive phenotype, as well as recurrence and death from prostate
cancer. These associations suggest the hypothesis that the gene fusion may be used as a prognostic indicator for prostate cancer.
Methods: In this study, fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) assays were used to assess TMPRSS2-ERG fusion status in a group of 214 prostate cancer cases from two population-based studies. The FISH assays were designed to detect both fusion type (deletion vs. translocation) and
the number of fusion copies (single vs. multiple). Genotyping of four ERG and one TMPRSS2 SNPs using germline DNA was also performed in a sample of the cases (n = 127).
Results: Of the 214 tumors scored for the TMPRSS2-ERG fusion, 64.5% were negative and 35.5% were positive for the fusion. Cases with the TMPRSS2-ERG fusion did not exhibit reduced prostate cancer survival (HR = 0.92, 95% CI = 0.22-3.93), nor was there a significant difference in causespecific survival when stratifying by translocation or deletion (HR = 0.84, 95% CI = 0.23-3.12) or by the number of retained fusion copies (HR = 1.22, 95% CI = .45-3.34). However, evidence for reduced prostate cancer-specific survival was apparent in those cases whose tumor had multiple
copies of the fusion. The variant T allele of the TMPRSS2 SNP, rs12329760, was positively associated with TMPRSS2-ERG fusion by translocation (p = 0.05) and with multiple copies of the gene fusion (p = 0.03).
Conclusion: If replicated, the results presented here may provide insight into the mechanism by which the TMPRSS2-ERG gene fusion arises and also contribute to diagnostic evaluations for determining the subset of men who will go on to develop metastatic prostate cancer.This work was supported by NIH grants RO1 CA56678, RO1 CA114524, and P50 CA97186; additional support was provided by the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and the Intramural Program of the National Human Genome Research Institute
Scaling Relations and Overabundance of Massive Clusters at Z ≳ 1 from Weak-Lensing Studies with the Hubble Space Telescope
We present weak gravitational lensing analysis of 22 high-redshift (z 1) clusters based on Hubble Space Telescope images. Most clusters in our sample provide significant lensing signals and are well detected in their reconstructed two-dimensional mass maps. Combining the current results and our previous weak-lensing studies of five other high-z clusters, we compare gravitational lensing masses of these clusters with other observables. We revisit the question whether the presence of the most massive clusters in our sample is in tension with the current ΛCDM structure formation paradigm. We find that the lensing masses are tightly correlated with the gas temperatures and establish, for the first time, the lensing mass-temperature relation at z 1. For the power-law slope of the M-TX relation (MT α), we obtain α = 1.54 ± 0.23. This is consistent with the theoretical self-similar prediction α = 3/2 and with the results previously reported in the literature for much lower redshift samples. However, our normalization is lower than the previous results by 20%-30%, indicating that the normalization in the M-TX relation might evolve. After correcting for Eddington bias and updating the discovery area with a more conservative choice, we find that the existence of the most massive clusters in our sample still provides a tension with the current ΛCDM model. The combined probability of finding the four most massive clusters in this sample after the marginalization over cosmological parameters is less than 1%
Automotive Industry Response to its Global QMS Standard ISO/TS-16949
With increasing globalization, the intense competition and customer-pressure have spurred many producers from developing/ emerging countries to adopt the best management and organizational practices. The quality issues are paramount for automotive manufacturing. The multiplicity of Quality Management System (QMS) Standards prevalent till the 1990s finally gave way to development of a harmonized automotive industry-specific QMS, namely ISO/TS-16949. This paper analyzes the major factors motivating firms to adopt this Standard: its quality signaling function, especially in international business, and facilitative role in moving up the supply chain. We investigate the inter-national and inter-regional concentration of ISO/TS-16949 certificates and relate those changes to the automotive industry dynamics. Among the top certifying nations - China, India and Brazil included - these certificates and ‘cars and commercial vehicles’ produced are highly correlated. A moderate-to-high worldwide growth of this certification is probable in near future with its gaining popularity among Tier-2 suppliers and for two/ three-wheeler automotive production. The Indian evidence indicates a sizeable proportion of car and commercial vehicle plants being ISO/TS-16949 certified and a high certification incidence among large and medium-large auto component firms. We suggest the creation of a Centre to encourage and prepare SMEs and provide financial assistance for ISO/TS-16949 certification
Early assembly of the most massive galaxies
The current consensus is that galaxies begin as small density fluctuations in
the early Universe and grow by in situ star formation and hierarchical merging.
Stars begin to form relatively quickly in sub-galactic sized building blocks
called haloes which are subsequently assembled into galaxies. However, exactly
when this assembly takes place is a matter of some debate. Here we report that
the stellar masses of brightest cluster galaxies, which are the most luminous
objects emitting stellar light, some 9 billion years ago are not significantly
different from their stellar masses today. Brightest cluster galaxies are
almost fully assembled 4-5 Gyrs after the Big Bang, having grown to more than
90% of their final stellar mass by this time. Our data conflict with the most
recent galaxy formation models based on the largest simulations of dark matter
halo development. These models predict protracted formation of brightest
cluster galaxies over a Hubble time, with only 22% of the stellar mass
assembled at the epoch probed by our sample. Our findings suggest a new picture
in which brightest cluster galaxies experience an early period of rapid growth
