Far-infrared interferometry/polarimetry on the ISX-B tokamak
Theoretical analyses have shown that the current density distribution in a tokamak plasma can be obtained indirectly by the measurement of the poloidal magnetic field created by the current flowing in the plasma discharge. The distribution of this field may be determined by projecting linearly polarized far-infrared (FIR) laser beams through the plasma and measuring the Faraday rotation of the polarization. Since the rotation angle of the polarization vector is proportional to the line integral of electron density times the poloidal magnetic field along the path, the electron density profile must also be measured simultaneously in order to unfold the current distribution. The amount of Faraday rotation expected in a typical plasma experiment is calculated to be on the order of 5 to 10 degrees. Therefore the authors have constructed a multichord modulated FIR polarimeter/interferometer that measures both the phase delay of four laser beams passing through a plasma discharge and the instantaneous polarization of these same beams. The phase shift of each of the beams is directly proportional to the line-averaged electron density and the polarization rotation is directly proportional to the line-averaged density times poloidal field
Cranio-spinal migration of a metallic clip placed during arteriovenous malformation resection - A case report, review of the literature, and management strategies
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Microclip placement during AVM resection is generally accepted to be a safe practice in neurosurgery. Here, we describe an unusual complication involving cranio-spinal clip migration discovered five years after the initial AVM surgery.</p> <p>Case Presentation</p> <p>A 53-year-old man underwent resection of a superior vermian AVM that required the placement of two microclips during the procedure. Five years after surgery, the patient suffered from descending sensory radiculopathy that resolved spontaneously. The workup revealed cranio-spinal migration of one of the previously placed microclips.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>AVM clip migration is a rare phenomenon; however, the diagnosis should be entertained in patients with posterior fossa instrumentation who suffer from unusual neurologic symptoms.</p

The propagation of submillimeter-waves (smm) in tokamak plasmas has been investigated both theoretically and experimentally to ensure successful measurements of electron density and plasma current distributions in tokamak devices. Theoretical analyses have been carried out to study the polarization of the smm waves in TFTR and ISX-B tokamaks. A multichord smm wave interferometer/polarimeter system has been employed to simultaneously measure the line electron density and poloidal field-induced Faraday rotation in the ISX-B tokamak. The experimental study on TFTR is under way. Computer codes have been developed and have been used to study the wave propagation and to reconstruct the distributions of plasma current and density from the measured data. The results are compared with other measurements

First narrow-band search for continuous gravitational waves from known pulsars in advanced detector data
Spinning neutron stars asymmetric with respect to their rotation axis are potential sources of
continuous gravitational waves for ground-based interferometric detectors. In the case of known pulsars a
fully coherent search, based on matched filtering, which uses the position and rotational parameters
obtained from electromagnetic observations, can be carried out. Matched filtering maximizes the signalto-
noise (SNR) ratio, but a large sensitivity loss is expected in case of even a very small mismatch
between the assumed and the true signal parameters. For this reason, narrow-band analysis methods have
been developed, allowing a fully coherent search for gravitational waves from known pulsars over a
fraction of a hertz and several spin-down values. In this paper we describe a narrow-band search of
11 pulsars using data from Advanced LIGO’s first observing run. Although we have found several initial
outliers, further studies show no significant evidence for the presence of a gravitational wave signal.
Finally, we have placed upper limits on the signal strain amplitude lower than the spin-down limit for 5 of
the 11 targets over the bands searched; in the case of J1813-1749 the spin-down limit has been beaten for
the first time. For an additional 3 targets, the median upper limit across the search bands is below the
spin-down limit. This is the most sensitive narrow-band search for continuous gravitational waves carried
out so far

The 'rules of the system' -- interpreted here to refer to affordances and constraints -- and the structure of information flows both offer a range of opportunities for design interventions to in fluence behaviour change, and in this paper, some of the implications and possibilities are discussed with reference to parallel concepts from within design, HCI and relevant areas of psychology
High-grade Endometrial Carcinomas: Morphologic and Immunohistochemical Features, Diagnostic Challenges and Recommendations
This review of challenging diagnostic issues concerning high-grade endometrial carcinomas is derived from the authors' review of the literature followed by discussions at the Endometrial Cancer Workshop sponsored by the International Society of Gynecological Pathologists in 2016. Recommendations presented are evidence-based, insofar as this is possible, given that the levels of evidence are weak or moderate due to small sample sizes and nonuniform diagnostic criteria used in many studies. High-grade endometrioid carcinomas include FIGO grade 3 endometrioid carcinomas, serous carcinomas, clear cell carcinomas, undifferentiated carcinomas, and carcinosarcomas. FIGO grade 3 endometrioid carcinoma is diagnosed when an endometrioid carcinoma exhibits >50% solid architecture (excluding squamous areas), or when an architecturally FIGO grade 2 endometrioid carcinoma exhibits marked cytologic atypia, provided that a glandular variant of serous carcinoma has been excluded. The most useful immunohistochemical studies to make the distinction between these 2 histotypes are p53, p16, DNA mismatch repair proteins, PTEN, and ARID1A. Endometrial clear cell carcinomas must display prototypical architectural and cytologic features for diagnosis. Immunohistochemical stains, including, Napsin A and p504s can be used as ancillary diagnostic tools; p53 expression is aberrant in a minority of clear cell carcinomas. Of note, clear cells are found in all types of high-grade endometrial carcinomas, leading to a tendency to overdiagnose clear cell carcinoma. Undifferentiated carcinoma (which when associated with a component of low-grade endometrioid carcinoma is termed "dedifferentiated carcinoma") is composed of sheets of monotonous, typically dyscohesive cells, which can have a rhabdoid appearance; they often exhibit limited expression of cytokeratins and epithelial membrane antigen, are usually negative for PAX8 and hormone receptors, lack membranous e-cadherin and commonly demonstrate loss of expression of DNA mismatch repair proteins and SWI-SNF chromatin remodeling proteins. Carcinosarcomas must show unequivocal morphologic evidence of malignant epithelial and mesenchymal differentiation

Granulocytes mediates the Fas-L-associated apoptosis during lung metastasis of melanoma that determines the metastatic behaviour
The survival of tumour cells in a new tissue environment is crucial for tumour metastasis. Factors contributing to the death of tumour cells during metastasis are not completely understood. In murine melanoma model, activation of Fas (CD95, APO-1) signal in tumour cells reduces their lung metastasis potential, which may be associated with an induction of apoptosis in tumours. To elucidate the cellular mechanism, we used a Fas-ligand (Fas-L) specific ribozyme (Fas-Lribozyme) to suppress the expression of Fas-L but not Fas or TNF-α in B16F10 melanoma cells. The Fas-Lribozyme-carrying cells grew slightly faster in vitro with better viability than controls. Suppression of Fas-L in B16F10 melanoma cells by Fas-Lribozyme enhanced lung metastasis of the cells in C57BL/6 mice, and that was correlated with reductions in both apoptotic tumour cells and granulocytic infiltration. Mice depleted of granulocytes, but not CD4+ and CD8+ cells, showed a greatly elevated susceptibility to lung metastasis. Moreover, apoptosis in tumour cells was significantly reduced in granulocyte-depleted mice during the course of tumour formation. Taken together, our findings indicate that Fas-L-associated apoptosis in tumour cells determines the metastasis behaviour of melanoma in the lung and this apoptosis is primarily mediated by the cytotoxicity of recruited granulocytes
