The Need for a Spiritual Reboot in the Youth of Great Commission Church

    Get PDF
The decline of the youth attendance is evident in many Protestant churches. This research paper examined forty-three young believers from three Haitian Baptist churches, respectively, located in Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx. These data results help develop a suitable spiritual program that includes the six key influencing factors for spiritual growth: discipleship, mentoring, parental influence, church attendance, personal devotion, and ministerial involvement. This spiritual program was tested on a small group of young people from Great Commission Church in Queens. This research uses a mixed-method methodology, which is a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods to analyze the data. The results show that parental influence can help Haitian youth attend church, but it does not encourage discipleship, mentorship, and ministerial involvement in the church. Further studies should aim at understanding the extent of parental involvement needed to encourage Haitian youth to be involved in the church\u27s ministries

Phase transition of the susceptible-infected-susceptible dynamics on time-varying configuration model networks

We present a degree-based theoretical framework to study the susceptible-infected-susceptible (SIS) dynamics on time-varying (rewired) configuration model networks. Using this framework, we provide a detailed analysis of the stationary state that covers, for a given structure, every dynamic regimes easily tuned by the rewiring rate. This analysis is suitable for the characterization of the phase transition and leads to three main contributions. (i) We obtain a self-consistent expression for the absorbing-state threshold, able to capture both collective and hub activation. (ii) We recover the predictions of a number of existing approaches as limiting cases of our analysis, providing thereby a unifying point of view for the SIS dynamics on random networks. (iii) We reinterpret the concept of hub-dominated phase transition. Within our framework, it appears as a heterogeneous critical phenomenon : observables for different degree classes have a different scaling with the infection rate. This leads to the successive activation of the degree classes beyond the epidemic threshold.Comment: 14 pages, 11 figure

Dios existe, pero..""Following a close reading, we have stated in the introduction a discussion of the problem of God in St. Thomas and Hegel. Our research, however, led in another direction. We explore the philosophical background that enters into dialogue with St. Thomas on the existence of God. In this sense, for a better contextualization of Aquinas, we have St. Augustine and St. Anselm stand as two pillars and sources that help inspire a better understanding of the thomistic approach to God. At stake are a priori demonstrations of St. Augustine and St. Anselm and the a posteriori proof of St. Thomas. As part of our investigation, we divided the work into three chapters: the first and second explore general considerations on St. Augustine and St. Anselm from the perspective of faith and reason. Accordingly, we succinctly present what God means for each of them and how this relates to their own experience of God. Then, we focus on the question of the existence of God in everyone, which leads us to the core of our inquiry: to publicize the thomistic philosophical positions about God, present at the beginning of his treatise De Deo Uno. What it claims is the third and final chapter, which allows us to deduce that God is one thing (being immutable and eternal) and that the world is another thing (in constant movement, precisely because of its contingency and finiteness. So being in the world ""through five ways, we can say that God exists without this proposition is a truth immediately evident."" God exist, but"Filósofo (a)Pregrad

The resilience of verbal sequence learning:Evidence from the Hebb repetition effect

    Get PDF
In a single large-scale study, we demonstrate that verbal sequence learning as studied using the classic Hebb repetition effect (Hebb, 1961)—the improvement in the serial recall of a repeating sequence compared to non-repeated sequences—is resilient to both wide and irregular spacing between sequence repetitions. Learning of a repeated sequence of letters was evident to a comparable degree with three, five, and eight intervening non-repeated sequences and regardless of whether the spacing between repetitions was regular or irregular. Importantly, this resilience of verbal sequence learning was observed despite the fact that there was complete item-set overlap between repeated and non-repeated sequences. The findings are consistent with the conceptualization of the Hebb repetition effect as a laboratory analogue of natural phonological word-form learning. The results also have implications for the two leading models of Hebb sequence learning: Whereas the results are incompatible with the model of Page and Norris (2009), they can be handled readily by the model of Burgess and Hitch (2006) through the abandonment of its assumption of long-term (across-trial level) decay

Universality of the stochastic block model

Mesoscopic pattern extraction (MPE) is the problem of finding a partition of the nodes of a complex network that maximizes some objective function. Many well-known network inference problems fall in this category, including, for instance, community detection, core-periphery identification, and imperfect graph coloring. In this paper, we show that the most popular algorithms designed to solve MPE problems can in fact be understood as special cases of the maximum likelihood formulation of the stochastic block model (SBM), or one of its direct generalizations. These equivalence relations show that the SBM is nearly universal with respect to MPE problems.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figure

Efficient sampling of spreading processes on complex networks using a composition and rejection algorithm

Efficient stochastic simulation algorithms are of paramount importance to the study of spreading phenomena on complex networks. Using insights and analytical results from network science, we discuss how the structure of contacts affects the efficiency of current algorithms. We show that algorithms believed to require O(logN)\mathcal{O}(\log N) or even O(1)\mathcal{O}(1) operations per update---where NN is the number of nodes---display instead a polynomial scaling for networks that are either dense or sparse and heterogeneous. This significantly affects the required computation time for simulations on large networks. To circumvent the issue, we propose a node-based method combined with a composition and rejection algorithm, a sampling scheme that has an average-case complexity of O[log(logN)]\mathcal{O} [\log(\log N)] per update for general networks. This systematic approach is first set-up for Markovian dynamics, but can also be adapted to a number of non-Markovian processes and can enhance considerably the study of a wide range of dynamics on networks.Comment: 12 pages, 7 figure

Action syndicale, démocratie et santé mentale au travail

    Get PDF
The mental health issue in the workplace is quite present in unions, putting at the core of action the centrality of working quality of life. Many participative researches, based on psychodynamic of work and practitioners’ narratives gave access to the reflective experience of unions workers about mental health at work, in their own union working context and through their interventions in external workplaces situations. New forms of working organisations, influenced by the “neoproductivist” ideology, have negative effect on mental health of numerous workers. The difficult access to democracy in the workplace is one important risk for mental health and the sign of a still prevalent condition of work alienation

Consensus recommendations for the diagnosis and treatment of acquired hemophilia A

Abstract

Background

Acquired hemophilia A (AHA) is a rare bleeding disorder caused by an autoantibody to coagulation factor (F) VIII. It is characterized by soft tissue bleeding in patients without a personal or family history of bleeding. Bleeding is variable, ranging from acute, life-threatening hemorrhage, with 9-22% mortality, to mild bleeding that requires no treatment. AHA usually presents to clinicians without prior experience of the disease, therefore diagnosis is frequently delayed and bleeds under treated.

Methods

Structured literature searches were used to support expert opinion in the development of recommendations for the management of patients with AHA.

Results

Immediate consultation with a hemophilia center experienced in the management of inhibitors is essential to ensure accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment. The laboratory finding of prolonged activated partial thromboplastin time with normal prothrombin time is typical of AHA, and the diagnosis should be considered even in the absence of bleeding. The FVIII level and autoantibody titer are not reliable predictors of bleeding risk or response to treatment. Most patients with AHA are elderly; comorbidities and underlying conditions found in 50% of patients often influence the clinical picture. Initial treatment involves the control of acute bleeding with bypassing agents. Immunosuppressive treatment to eradicate the FVIII inhibitor should be started as soon as the diagnosis is confirmed to reduce the time the patient is at risk of bleeding.

Conclusions

These recommendations aim to increase awareness of this disorder among clinicians in a wide range of specialties and provide practical advice on diagnosis and treatment.</p

Under ice spills of conventional crude oil and diluted bitumen: Physiological resilience of the blue mussel and transgenerational effects

Spillages at sea of diluted bitumen (dilbit) from oil sands have received little attention until now. To our best knowledge, there are no reports on the impact of a severe exposure to dilbit on the Blue mussel (Mytilus edulis). In this study, adult Blue mussels were exposed to one conventional crude oil (Heidrun) and two dilbits (Cold Lake Blend and Access Western Blend) for a period of 7 days in an ice-covered environment and then maintained for three months until the spawning season. The exposed mussels were monitored for aromatic hydrocarbon bioaccumulation, physiological energetic budget, cellular stress, byssus production and gametogenesis. In spring, spawning was induced to characterize breeding success. Bioaccumulation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) was detected after three days of exposure, with higher concentrations of PAHs associated to the conventional oil (5.49 ± 0.12 μg·g−1 d.w.) compared to both dilbits (0.91 ± 0.02 μg·g−1; 0.51 ± 0.03 μg·g−1 d.w.). Despite a fast depuration rate and a good resilience of the exposed mussels, significant negative effects were observed at the cellular, physiological and fitness levels, especially in offspring. Our results suggest a higher toxicity of the diluted bitumen compared to the conventional crude despite the lower bioaccumulation of total PAHs. Dilbit treatments caused evident negative transgenerational effects on unexposed F1 generation. -- Keywords : Diluted bitumen ; PAHs ; Blue mussel ; Winter oil spill ; Ice oil spill
