Study of an engine flow diverter system for a large scale ejector powered aircraft model
Requirements were established for a conceptual design study to analyze and design an engine flow diverter system and to include accommodations for an ejector system in an existing 3/4 scale fighter model equipped with YJ-79 engines. Model constraints were identified and cost-effective limited modification was proposed to accept the ejectors, ducting and flow diverter valves. Complete system performance was calculated and a versatile computer program capable of analyzing any ejector system was developed
Kaon-nucleon couplings for weak decays of hypernuclei
We investigate the weak kaon-nucleon (NNK) S-wave and P-wave interactions using heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory. The leading 1-loop SU(3) breaking contributions to the ppK, pnK, and nnK couplings are computed. We find that they suppress all NNK amplitudes by 30\% to 50\%. The ratio of neutron-induced to proton-induced hypernuclear decay widths is sensitive to such reductions. It has been argued that the discrepancy between the predicted and observed P-wave amplitudes in \Delta s=1 hyperon decay results from an accidental cancellation between tree-level amplitudes, and is not a fundamental problem for chiral perturbation theory. Agreement between experimentally determined NNK P-wave amplitudes and our estimates would support this explanation
Efficient CRISPR-rAAV engineering of endogenous genes to study protein function by allele-specific RNAi.
Gene knockout strategies, RNAi and rescue experiments are all employed to study mammalian gene function. However, the disadvantages of these approaches include: loss of function adaptation, reduced viability and gene overexpression that rarely matches endogenous levels. Here, we developed an endogenous gene knockdown/rescue strategy that combines RNAi selectivity with a highly efficient CRISPR directed recombinant Adeno-Associated Virus (rAAV) mediated gene targeting approach to introduce allele-specific mutations plus an allele-selective siRNA Sensitive (siSN) site that allows for studying gene mutations while maintaining endogenous expression and regulation of the gene of interest. CRISPR/Cas9 plus rAAV targeted gene-replacement and introduction of allele-specific RNAi sensitivity mutations in the CDK2 and CDK1 genes resulted in a >85% site-specific recombination of Neo-resistant clones versus ∼8% for rAAV alone. RNAi knockdown of wild type (WT) Cdk2 with siWT in heterozygotic knockin cells resulted in the mutant Cdk2 phenotype cell cycle arrest, whereas allele specific knockdown of mutant CDK2 with siSN resulted in a wild type phenotype. Together, these observations demonstrate the ability of CRISPR plus rAAV to efficiently recombine a genomic locus and tag it with a selective siRNA sequence that allows for allele-selective phenotypic assays of the gene of interest while it remains expressed and regulated under endogenous control mechanisms
Quantum affine Cartan matrices, Poincare series of binary polyhedral groups, and reflection representations
We first review some invariant theoretic results about the finite subgroups
of SU(2) in a quick algebraic way by using the McKay correspondence and quantum
affine Cartan matrices. By the way it turns out that some parameters
(a,b,h;p,q,r) that one usually associates with such a group and hence with a
simply-laced Coxeter-Dynkin diagram have a meaningful definition for the
non-simply-laced diagrams, too, and as a byproduct we extend Saito's formula
for the determinant of the Cartan matrix to all cases. Returning to invariant
theory we show that for each irreducible representation i of a binary
tetrahedral, octahedral, or icosahedral group one can find a homomorphism into
a finite complex reflection group whose defining reflection representation
restricts to i.Comment: 19 page
Black holes admitting a Freudenthal dual
The quantised charges x of four dimensional stringy black holes may be
assigned to elements of an integral Freudenthal triple system whose
automorphism group is the corresponding U-duality and whose U-invariant quartic
norm Delta(x) determines the lowest order entropy. Here we introduce a
Freudenthal duality x -> \tilde{x}, for which \tilde{\tilde{x}}=-x. Although
distinct from U-duality it nevertheless leaves Delta(x) invariant. However, the
requirement that \tilde{x} be integer restricts us to the subset of black holes
for which Delta(x) is necessarily a perfect square. The issue of higher-order
corrections remains open as some, but not all, of the discrete U-duality
invariants are Freudenthal invariant. Similarly, the quantised charges A of
five dimensional black holes and strings may be assigned to elements of an
integral Jordan algebra, whose cubic norm N(A) determines the lowest order
entropy. We introduce an analogous Jordan dual A*, with N(A) necessarily a
perfect cube, for which A**=A and which leaves N(A) invariant. The two
dualities are related by a 4D/5D lift.Comment: 32 pages revtex, 10 tables; minor corrections, references adde
A unified approach on Springer fibers in the hook, two-row and two-column cases
We consider the Springer fiber over a nilpotent endomorphism. Fix a Jordan
basis and consider the standard torus relative to this. We deal with the
problem to describe the flags fixed by the torus which belong to a given
component of the Springer fiber. We solve the problem in the hook, two-row and
two-column cases. We provide two main characterizations which are common to the
three cases, and which involve dominance relations between Young diagrams and
combinatorial algorithms. Then, for these three cases, we deduce topological
properties of the components and their intersections.Comment: 42 page
Development of an in-line filter to prevent intrusion of NO2 toxic vapors into A/C systems
The hypergolic propellant nitrogen tetroxide (N2O4 or NTO) is routinely used in spacecraft launched at Kennedy Space Center (KSC) and Cape Canaveral Air Station (CCAS). In the case of a catastrophic failure of the spacecraft, there would be a release of the unspent propellant in the form of a toxic cloud. Inhalation of this material at downwind concentrations which may be as high as 20 parts per million (ppm) for 30 minutes in duration, may produce irritation to the eyes, nose and respiratory tract. Studies at both KSC and CCAS have shown that the indoor concentrations of N2O4 during a toxic release may range from 1 to 15 ppm and depend on the air change rate (ACR) for a particular building and whether or not the air conditioning (A/C) system has been shut down or left in an operating mode. This project was initiated in order to assess how current A/C systems could be easily modified to prevent personnel from being exposed to toxic vapors. A sample system has been constructed to test the ability of several types of filter material to capture the N2O4 vapors prior to their infiltration into the A/C system. Test results will be presented which compare the efficiencies of standard A/C filters, water wash systems, and chemically impregnated filter material in taking toxic vapors out of the incoming air stream
