Evaluation of GPS device properties for a possible use in future household travel surveys
This paper describes a series of tests undertaken to determine the potential usefulness of a specific passive, portable GPS device for use in household travel surveys. The tests were undertaken to provide a more complete understanding of the properties of the GPS device and to assess its suitability for replacing more conventional self-report diaries in a household travel survey. The tests were conducted first to ascertain the actual battery life of the devices, and then to test out the sensitivity and accuracy of the devices under a number of different conditions. This included tests by train, bus, and ferry in the Sydney area, and also by car and bicycle. The devices were also tested in various positions on the respondent’s body and were also tested in urban canyon and tunnel situations. Two versions of the GPS-PPAL were tested, as a result of an updated version that became available during the testing work. The results show that the GPSPPAL, especially in the latest modification, is well able to record travel very accurately in almost any situation
Electroluminescence from a polythiophene molecular wire suspended in a plasmonic scanning tunneling microscope junction
The electroluminescence of a polythiophene wire suspended between two
metallic electrodes is probed using a scanning tunneling microscope. Under
positive sample voltage, the spectral and voltage dependencies of the emitted
light are consistent with the fluorescence of the wire junction mediated by
localized plasmons. This emission is strongly attenuated for the opposite
polarity. Both emission mechanism and polarity dependence are similar to what
occurs in organic light emitting diodes (OLED) but at the level of a single
molecular wire.Comment: to be published in Physical Review Letter
Pulling and Stretching a Molecular Wire to Tune its Conductance
A scanning tunnelling microscope is used to pull a polythiophene wire from a
Au(111) surface while measuring the current traversing the junction. Abrupt
current increases measured during the lifting procedure are associated to the
detachment of molecular sub-units, in apparent contradiction with the expected
exponential decrease of the conductance with wire length. \textit{Ab initio}
simulations reproduce the experimental data and demonstrate that this
unexpected behavior is due to release of mechanical stress in the wire, paving
the way to mechanically gated single-molecule electronic devices
Magnetism of CoPd self-organized alloy clusters on Au(111)
Magnetic properties of gold-encapsulated CoxPd1-x self-organized nano-clusters on Au(111) are analyzed by x-ray magnetic circular dichroism for x = 0.5, 0.7, and 1.0. The clusters are superparamagnetic with a blocking temperature decreasing with increasing Pd concentration, due to a reduction of the out-of-plane anisotropy strength. No magnetic moment is detected on Pd in these clusters, within the detection limit, contrary to thick CoPd films. Both reduction of anisotropy and vanishing Pd moment are attributed to strain.
