Lower urinary tract symptoms and benign prostatic hyperplasia and their impact on quality of life

LUTS is an acronym that refers to symptoms affecting the lower urinary tract, which are very common in elderly subjects (between 60 and 70%), and often associated with, but not always caused by, benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH). BPH is a chronic condition characterized by an increase in the number of cells, particularly in the transition area of the prostate. BPH involves a compression of the surrounding tissues, consequently obstructing vescical voiding. Nycturia and urgency represent the most prevalent symptoms and those with the greatest impact on quality of life measured as urinary-specific health-related quality. The prevalence of BPH is directly proportional to age; therefore, the absolute number of subjects affected is growing throughout the world. BPH is one of the most common medical conditions affecting those over 50. The overall cost for the diagnosis and treatment of BPH-related LUTS, in the US, has been estimated at approximately 1.1 billion US$/year, compared to total annual expenditure for urological conditions of some 9 billion and this cost continues to increase. The quick prostate test, which was developed by the Italian Urology Society (SIU), is an easy to use instrument that can be utilized in first-level screening for evaluation of the male population with LUTS. This test can be used both in patients not on pharmacological treatment and as a therapy-monitoring instrument. A positive response to one of the questions is sufficient for requesting a more in-depth investigation, which may provide indications on the therapeutic strategy to be taken

Measurements of projectile fragments from 70 Zn (15 MeV/nucleon) + 64 Ni collisions with the MAGNEX spectrometer at INFN-LNS

The present work is focused on our efforts to produce and identify neutron-richrare isotopes from peripheral reactions below the Fermi energy. High-quality experimental data were obtained from a recent experiment with the MAGNEX spectrometer at INFN-LNS in Catania, Italy. The main goal of this effort is to describe the adopted identification techniques used to analyze the data from the reaction 70 Zn (15 MeV/nucleon) + 64 Ni. The particle identification procedure is based on a novel approach that involves the reconstruction of both the atomic number Z and the ionic charge q of the ions, followed by the identification of themass. Our method was successfully applied to identify neutron-rich ejectiles from multinucleon transfer in the above reaction 70 Zn + 64 Ni at 15 MeV/nucleon. The analysis of the data is ongoing. We expect to obtain the angular and momentum distributions of the fragments, along with their production cross sections. These data, along with comparisons with theoretical models are expected to contribute to a better understanding of the complex reaction mechanisms of multinucleon transfer that dominate this energy regime

Forum: conflict delegation in civil wars

This forum provides an outlet for an assessment of research on the delegation of war to non-state armed groups in civil wars. Given the significant growth of studies concerned with this phenomenon over the last decade, this forum critically engages with the present state of the field. First, we canvass some of the most important theoretical developments to demonstrate the heterogeneity of the debate. Second, we expand on the theme of complexity and investigate its multiple facets as a window into pushing the debate forward. Third, we draw the contours of a future research agenda by highlighting some contemporary problems, puzzles, and challenges to empirical data collection. In essence, we seek to connect two main literatures that have been talking past each other: external support in civil wars and proxy warfare. The forum bridges this gap at a critical juncture in this new and emerging scholarship by offering space for scholarly dialogue across conceptual labels

Recent results on heavy-ion induced reactions of interest for neutrinoless double beta decay at INFN-LNS

Abstract. The possibility to use a special class of heavy-ion induced direct reactions, such as double charge exchange reactions, is discussed in view of their application to extract information that may be helpful to determinate the nuclear matrix elements entering in the expression of neutrinoless double beta decay halflife. The methodology of the experimental campaign presently running at INFN - Laboratori Nazionali del Sud is reported and the experimental challenges characterizing such activity are describe

New results from the NUMEN project

NUMEN aims at accessing experimentally driven information on Nuclear Matrix Elements (NME) involved in the half-life of the neutrinoless double beta decay (0νββ), by high-accuracy measurements of the cross sections of Heavy Ion (HI) induced Double Charge Exchange (DCE) reactions. First evidence about the possibility to get quantitative information about NME from experiments is found for the (18O,18Ne) and (20Ne,20O) reactions. Moreover, to infer the neutrino average masses from the possible measurement of the half-life of 0νββ decay, the knowledge of the NME is a crucial aspect. The key tools for this project are the high resolution Superconducting Cyclotron beams and the MAGNEX magnetic spectrometer at INFN Laboratori Nazionali del Sud in Catania (Italy). The measured cross sections are extremely low, limiting the present exploration to few selected isotopes of interest in the context of typically low-yield experimental runs. A major upgrade of the LNS facility is foreseen in order to increase the experimental yield of at least two orders of magnitude, thus making feasible a systematic study of all the cases of interest. peerReviewe

El artículo analiza el uso de la metáfora del fuego amoroso, desde sus primeros testimonios, provenientes de la poesía erótica de época arcaica, hasta los de época clásica en que el topos adquiere rasgos connotativos. En la tragedia viene encuadrado, de hecho, en la representación de un estado emocional más complejo, en línea con el interés de los tragediógrafos por la fisiología de las emociones; en la comedia, en cambio, la metáfora revive como reescritura irónica y parodia sutil de una imagen inveterada

L'auteur examine les formes de plainte qui se manifestent en réponse à une émotion, avec le double but d'analyser la signification des verbes κλαίω, γοάω, στένω, οίμώζω / κωκύω, οδύρομαι dans les poèmes homériques et de tenter une reconstitution globale des différentes formes de la plainte ici traitée. Il campo semantico di μάτη e de suoi derivati

The semantic field of μάτη is connected with the idea of «being unable to do something according to the needs of the circumstances where the human being happens to act». Whereas in the Iliad μάτη is caused by something external to the human being, in the Odyssey it's a product of the man.
