    Organic conversion strategies for stockless farming systems

    This report was presented at the UK Organic Research 2002 Conference. The identification of appropriate stockless organic conversion strategies will help farmers and growers in their decision to convert to organic production. The current practice of a two-year red clover/ryegrass ley conversion relies on subsidies to be economically viable. This standard conversion and six alternatives were tested on a sandy loam soil entering organic conversion. A test crop of winter wheat will be grown across the entire experimental area in the first fully organic year (2001/2002). Strategies containing a legume ley phase returned the greatest amount of nitrogen to the soil. At the end of the second year, pre-cultivation, there were no differences in soil mineral nitrogen between strategies. Gross margins were greater from those strategies with cash cropping than those without, in spite of the generally depressed yields. Preliminary analysis suggests that growing red clover for seed in year 1 followed by a red clover ley in year 2 could be the most profitable option

    Audiogenic reflex seizures in cats

    This study aims at characterizing feline audiogenic reflex seizures (FARS). An online questionnaire was developed to capture information from owners with cats suffering FARS. This was collated with the medical records from the primary veterinarian. Ninety-six cats were included. Myoclonic seizures were one of the cardinal signs of this syndrome (90/96), frequently occurring prior to generalized tonic-clonic seizures (GTCS) in this population. Other features include a late-onset (median 15 years) and absence seizures (6/96), with most seizures triggered by high frequency sounds amid occasional spontaneous seizures (up to 20%). Half the population (48/96) had hearing impairment or were deaf. One third of cats (35/96) had concurrent diseases, most likely reflecting the age distribution. Birmans were strongly represented (30/96). Levetiracetam gave good seizure control. The course of the epilepsy was non-progressive in the majority (68/96) with an improvement over time in some (23/96). Only 33/96 and 11/90 owners respectively felt the GTCS and myoclonic seizures affected their cat’s quality of life (QoL). Despite this, many owners (50/96) reported a slow decline in their cat’s health becoming less responsive (43/50), not jumping (41/50), uncoordinated or weak in the pelvic limbs (24/50), and exhibiting dramatic weight loss (39/50). These signs were exclusively reported in cats experiencing seizures for >2 years with 42/50 owners stating these signs affected their cat’s QoL. In gathering data on audiogenic seizures in cats, we have identified a new epilepsy syndrome named FARS with a geriatric-onset. Further studies are warranted to investigate potential genetic predispositions to this condition

    Negotiating sexuality and masculinity in school sport: An autoethnography

    This autoethnography explores challenging and ethically sensitive issues around sexual orientation, sexual identity and masculinity in the context of school sport. Through storytelling, I aim to show how sometimes ambiguous encounters with heterosexism, homophobia and hegemonic masculinity through sport problematise identity development for young same-sex attracted males. By foregrounding personal embodied experience, I respond to an absence of stories of gay and bisexual experiences among males in physical education and school sport, in an effort to reduce a continuing sense of Otherness and difference regarding same-sex attracted males. I rely on the story itself to express the embodied forms of knowing that inhabit the experiences I describe, and resist a finalising interpretation of the story. Instead, I offer personal reflections on particular theoretical and methodological issues which relate to both the form and content of the story

    Reflections on a degree initiative: the UK's Birmingham Royal Ballet dancers enter the University of Birmingham

    This paper provides an opportunity to share experiences and perceptions of the first 5 years of a degree programme for professional dancers. A partnership developed in the mid-1990s between the UK's Birmingham Royal Ballet and the University of Birmingham, Westhill (now School of Education), to provide a part-time, post-experience, flexible study programme for full-time Company dancers. This is the first 'company customised' higher education programme to dovetail studies around rehearsal, performance and touring schedules. Methodology is based on a narrative by the author, informed by ongoing internal and external evaluations, in-depth interviews with dancers and Company managers, documentation and secondary sources. Outcomes indicate that the programme has made a positive difference to the Company, to the dancers and to the wider education and dance/arts world

    Preanthesis biomass accumulation of plant and plant organs defines yield components in wheat

    The preanthesis period in wheat is critical for growth of plant organs including leaves, stems, spikes and roots. However, the roles of the preanthesis biomass accumulation of plant and plant organs in yield determination are only partially elucidated, and the underlying genetic basis remains largely unknown. This study aimed to understand the physiological and genetic relationships between preanthesis biomass accumulation and yield determination. In a mapping population of bread wheat (Triticum aestivum ‘Forno’) and its relative spelt (Triticum spelta ‘Oberkulmer’) contrasting for biomass, the dry weight of above-ground whole shoots and different organs, and leaf area, were analysed at GS39 (full flag leaf emergence) and anthesis. Yield components (thousand grain weight, grains per spike, final shoot biomass and grain weight per spike) and plant height were measured at maturity, followed by identification of quantitative trait loci (QTL) for all above traits. Field experiments were carried out in UK in 2011–2012 and 2012–2013 seasons, each using a randomised complete block design with three replicates. The results showed that there was a significant variation in biomass and its partitioning to organs at different stages. Consistent with the previous findings, stem water soluble carbohydrates and spike dry weight at anthesis contributed to thousand grain weight and grains per spike, respectively. In addition, this study revealed many other traits positively associated with one or more yield components, including biomass and leaf area at GS39, leaf and structural stem growth as well as whole shoot biomass at anthesis, and higher dry matter accumulation and crop (and spike) growth rates between the two stages. Increasing shoot biomass by removing other tillers at GS39 led to higher grain number and grain weight per spike. These results indicate the importance of the preanthesis growth of plant and plant organs for yield determination. Plant height was only weakly correlated with final biomass at maturity so it is possible to produce high-biomass genotypes without increasing plant height. Genetic analysis revealed 193 QTL associated with biomass and biomass-related traits. Frequent QTL coincidences between biomass and yield traits were observed, mainly on chromosomes 2B, 3A, 4A, 4B, 5A, 6A and 7B, indicating pleiotropy or tight gene linkages, consistent with their phenotypic associations. The preanthesis biomass traits associated with yield components and the underlying QTL, would facilitate the trait-based physiological and molecular breeding in wheat

    Modeling the geometry of the endoplasmic reticulum network

    Conference ProceedingFirst International Conference, AlCoB 2014, held in July 2014 in Tarragona, Spain.We have studied the network geometry of the endoplasmic reticulum by means of graph theoretical and integer programming models. The purpose is to represent this structure as close as possible by a class of finite, undirected and connected graphs the nodes of which have to be either of degree three or at most of degree three. We determine plane graphs of minimal total edge length satisfying degree and angle constraints, and we show that the optimal graphs are close to the ER network geometry. Basically, two procedures are formulated to solve the optimization problem: a binary linear program, that iteratively constructs an optimal solution, and a linear program, that iteratively exploits additional cutting planes from different families to accelerate the solution process. All formulations have been implemented and tested on a series of real-life and randomly generated cases. The cutting plane approach turns out to be particularly efficient for the real-life testcases, since it outperforms the pure integer programming approach by a factor of at least 10. © 2014 Springer International Publishing

The TMSOTf-mediated reaction of the γ,δ-unsaturated alcohols with aldehydes creates two oxygen heterocycles and three new stereocenters in a single pot. The approach is versatile, and by varying the boronic acid, Grignard reagent, and aldehyde, different substituents may be introduced, while use of a chiral base in the conjugate addition gives enantioenriched products

    Identifying seedling root architectural traits associated with yield and yield components in wheat

    Background and Aims: Plant roots growing underground are critical for soil resource acquisition, anchorage and plant-environment interactions. In wheat (Triticum aestivum), however, the target root traits to improve yield potential still remain largely unknown. This study aimed to identify traits of seedling root system architecture (RSA) associated with yield and yield components in 226 recombinant inbred lines (RILs) derived from a cross between the bread wheat Triticum aestivum ‘Forno’ (small, wide root system) and spelt Triticum spelta ‘Oberkulmer’ (large, narrow root system). Methods: A ‘pouch and wick’ high-throughput phenotyping pipeline was used to determine the RSA traits of 13-d-old RIL seedlings. Two field and one glasshouse experiments were carried out to investigate the yield, yield components and phenology, followed by identification of quantitative trait loci (QTL). Key Results: There was substantial variation in RSA traits between genotypes. Seminal root number and total root length were both positively associated with grains m-2, grains per spike, above-ground biomass m-2, and grain yield. More seminal roots and longer total root length were also associated with delayed maturity and extended grain filling, likely to be a consequence of more grains being defined before anthesis. Additionally, the maximum width of the root system displayed positive relationships with spikes m-2, grains m-2, and grain yield. Ten RILs selected for longest total roots exhibited the same effects on yield and phenology as described above, compared to the ten lines with shortest total roots. Genetic analysis revealed 38 QTL for the RSA, and QTL coincidence between the root and yield traits were frequently observed, indicating tightly linked genes or pleiotropy, which concurs with the results of phenotypic correlation analysis. Conclusions: Based on the results from the Forno × Oberkulmer population, it is proposed that vigorous early root growth, particularly more seminal roots and longer total root length, is important to improve yield potential, and should be incorporated into wheat ideotypes in breeding
