On the stable classification of spin four-manifolds

We study the stable classification of closed connected oriented spin smooth 4-manifolds by using techniques of Kervaire-Milnor surgery. Then we reproduce a nice result of Kurazono and Matumoto [I. Kurazono, T. Matumoto, Hiroshima Math. J. 28, 1998] for such manifolds under the assumption that the fundamental group is finitely presentable and has vanishing second and third homology with Z_2-coefficients

Objectives:Alveolarair leakageremains a serious problemin lung surgery, beingassociatedwith increased postoperative morbidity, prolonged hospital stay and greater health-care costs. The aim of this study was to evaluate the sealing efficacy and safety of the surgical patch, TachoSil W , inlungsurgery. Methods:Patientsundergoingelectivepulmonarylobectomywhohad grade1 or 2air leakage(evaluatedbythewatersubmersion test) after primary stapling and limited suturing were randomised at 12 European centres to open-label treatment with TachoSil W or standard surgicaltreatment(resuturing, staplingor nofurthertreatmentat thesurgeons'discretion).Randomisationwas performedduringsurgeryusinga centralisedinteractive voice response system. Durationof postoperative air leakage (primary end point), reductionof intra-operative air leakage intensity (secondary end point) and adverse events (AEs), including postoperative complications, were assessed. Results: A total of 486 patients were screened and 299 received trial treatment (intent-to-treat (ITT) population: TachoSil W , n = 148; standard treatment, n = 151). TachoSil W resulted in a reduction in the duration of postoperative air leakage (p = 0.030). Patients in the TachoSil W group also experienced a greater reduction in intra-operative air leakage intensity (p = 0.042). Median time until chest drain removal was 4 days with TachoSil W and 5 days in the standard group (p = 0.054). There was no difference between groups in hospital length of stay. AEs were generally similar in both groups, including postoperative complications. Conclusions: TachoSil W was superior to standard surgical treatment in reducing both postoperative air leakage duration and intra-operative air leakage intensity in patients undergoing elective pulmonary lobectomy

Ganhar jogo, pagar jogo e ganhar visita: prática futebolística em um bairro rural

    Get PDF
Partindo da premissa de que existe uma heterogeneidade de significados e práticas do esporte, proponho, ainda, problematizar as premissas dicotômicas que fomentam o debate envolvendo, principalmente, os usos dos conceitos de esporte e jogo, mas também a dimensão ritual e a dimensão cotidiana, tendo sempre em mente que são planos em constantes articulações.I intend to reflect on some possible approaches on football from an ethnographic experience in a neighborhood located in the rural perimeter of São Bento do Sapucaí (SP), where I investigated the possible interlacements between associative forms and sociability around football and the universe of the community. By means of these interlacements I could verify the presence of certain dynamics in the local football contexts, where the actions to receive and to visit other teams imply intelligible duties and rules in a system of particular reciprocity. From the premise that heterogeneity exists of meanings and practices of the sport, I intent to discuss the dichotomic premises that fuel the debate involving, mostly, the uses of the concepts of sport and game, but also the ritualistic and the everyday aspects, keeping in mind that they are always interconnected

    Asphericity of symmetric presentations

Using the notion of relative presentation due to Bogley and Pride, we give a new proof of a theorem of Prishchepov on the asphericity of certain symmetric presentations of groups. Then we obtain further results and applications to topology of low-dimensional manifolds

Coloring Torus Knots by Conjugation Quandles

In the first part of this paper, we present general results concerning the colorability of torus knots using conjugation quandles over any abstract group. Subsequently, we offer a numerical characterization for the colorability of torus knots using conjugation quandles over some particular groups, such as the matrix groups GL(2,q)GL(2,q) and SL(2,q)SL(2,q), the dihedral group, and the symmetric group.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figure

Enhanced properties of magnetorheological fluids: Effect of pressure

    Get PDF
Magnetorheological fluids are extensively used in the industrial world to produce dissipative systems in an easily adjustable or even self-adaptive way. Sometimes their intrinsic rheological properties fail to meet system requirements in terms of available forces or yield stress for a given design space. In technical literature, previous works show a dependency of the shear strength of magnetorheological fluids on the internal pressure of the fluid, called squeeze strengthen effect. This work aims at the experimental validation of the behaviour of the magnetorheological fluids in both flow and shear modes under a given compressive state. Two specific ad hoc experimental test rigs are used for the campaign. The systems are designed in order to apply the magnetic field and the pressure at the same time and the tests are carried out following a design of experiment method. The magnetic parts of the system are designed with the help of a magnetic finite element simulation software, then the experiments are performed and the results are collected. The output is analysed through an analysis of variance approach, a statistical procedure that shows the influence of multiple variables on the system outputs. The outcome of the experimental tests confirms the beneficial effect of the pressure in both flow and shear modes, with performances up to three times compared with the datasheet values, where no pressure is considered
