    European Acquisitions in the United States:Re-examining Olivetti-Underwood Fifty Years Later

    While Italy's catch-up in the course of the 20th century has been nothing short of extraordinary, it has failed to produce a large number of global business players. Nonetheless, half a century ago an Italian company concluded what was at the time the largest-ever foreign takeover of a US company. The paper analyzes the Olivetti's acquisition of Underwood and frames it in the broader picture of the literature on the management and performance of foreign companies in the United States. We provide a historical narrative focused on three main issues: 1) head office control and subsidiary autonomy; 2) Olivetti's adaptation to the American business system; 3) the development of internal knowledge resources within the subsidiary.     GUCH POPULATION: CARDIOLOGIC AND SURGICAL DEMANDS

    To evaluate the cardiologic and surgical demands of the GUCH population followed up in our Department, a retrospective analysis of 709 hospital admissions (HA) of 536 pts (mean age 34?16, range 16-79 years), carried out from 1997 to 2002, has been performed. In 293 pts the basic cardiopathy was simple (SC), in 158 of moderate complexity (MCC) and in 85 of great complexity (GCC). The reason for 169 HA was cardiac surgery and for 537 HA cardiologic issues. The overall HA/pt was 1.3 (1.1 in SC,1.3 in MCC, 2.1 in GCC). In 166 surgical pts, 171 operations were performed. First operations (n=105, 62%) were most commonly for atrial septal defect (n=50, 48%), aortic valve replacement(n=11,10%), ventricular septal defect (n=8, 8%). Reoperations (n=64, 38%) were divided among reintervention after corrective repair (n=45, 70%), further palliation (n=17, 26%), first palliation (n=2, 4%) and the most frequent were: Fontan operation (n=11, 17%), RV-PA conduit replacement (n=8, 12%), aortic valve replacement (n=6, 9%). The mean hospital stay was 19?17 days. Pleuro-pericardial effusion (n=32,18%), bleeding (n=11, 6%) and arrhythmias(n=11, 6%) were the most prevalent complications. Early mortality (n=7/171, 4%) was influenced by cyanosis (6 of 33,18% in cyanotic pts; 1 of 136, 2% in acyanotic, p<0,001) and by complexity of cardiopathy (n=6 of 43 GCC, 14%; n=1 of 72 MCC, 1%; 0 of 54 SC,0%, p<0.001) that was a risk factor also for more serious complications (20% in GCC, with respect of 9% in MCC, p<0,05 and 4% in SC, p<0.001). The principal reasons for 537 cardiologic HA in 432 pts, were: interventional procedures (n=209, 39%), diagnostic catheterisation (n=155, 29%), non invasive evaluation (n=95, 18%), arrhythmias (n=46, 10%). Closure of atrial septal discontinuity (n=167, 80%), patent ductus arteriosus (n=21, 10%), pulmonary valvuloplasty (n=8, 4%) and angioplasty of Coarctation (n=6, 3%), were more prevalent interventional procedures. In pts with GCC, heart failure and cyanosis were more commonly cause of HA than in MGC and SC (p<0.001). Despite the progress of pediatric cardiology and cardiac surgery, medical demands of GUCH remain numerous and complex throughout their lives. Therefore, it is extremely important to provide specialized surgical and cardiologic care for this complicated population

    The mechanisms by which noninvasive vagal nerve stimulation (nVNS) affect central and peripheral neural circuits that subserve pain and autonomic physiology are not clear, and thus remain an area of intense investigation. Effects of nVNS vs sham stimulation on subject responses to five noxious thermal stimuli (applied to left lower extremity), were measured in 30 healthy subjects (n = 15 sham and n = 15 nVNS), with fMRI and physiological galvanic skin response (GSR). With repeated noxious thermal stimuli a group × time analysis showed a significantly (p &lt; .001) decreased response with nVNS in bilateral primary and secondary somatosensory cortices (SI and SII), left dorsoposterior insular cortex, bilateral paracentral lobule, bilateral medial dorsal thalamus, right anterior cingulate cortex, and right orbitofrontal cortex. A group × time × GSR analysis showed a significantly decreased response in the nVNS group (p &lt; .0005) bilaterally in SI, lower and mid medullary brainstem, and inferior occipital cortex. Finally, nVNS treatment showed decreased activity in pronociceptive brainstem nuclei (e.g. the reticular nucleus and rostral ventromedial medulla) and key autonomic integration nuclei (e.g. the rostroventrolateral medulla, nucleus ambiguous, and dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus nerve). In aggregate, noninvasive vagal nerve stimulation reduced the physiological response to noxious thermal stimuli and impacted neural circuits important for pain processing and autonomic output

    Bollettino Sismico Italiano: Analisys of Early Aftershocks of the 2016 MW 6.0 Amatrice, MW 5.9 Visso and MW 6.5 Norcia earthquakes in Central Italy

    The Amatrice-Visso-Norcia seismic sequence is the most important of the last 30 years in Italy. The seismic sequence started on 24 August, 2016 and still is ongoing in central Apennines. At the end of February 2017 more than 57,000 events were located, 80,000 events up to the end of September 2017 (Fig. 1). The mainshocks of the sequence occurred on 24 August 2016 (Mw 6.0 and Mw 5.4), 26 October 2016 (Mw 5.4 and Mw 5.9), 30 October 2016 (Mw 6.5), 18 January 2017 (four earthquakes Mw≥ 5.0). In this seismic sequence, all the waveforms recorded by temporary stations deployed by the SISMIKO emergency group (stations T12**; Moretti et al., 2016) where available in real- time at the surveillance room of INGV. Because of the high level of seismicity and the dense seismic network installed in the region, more than 150 events per day were located at the end of February 2017; still 60 events per day were located up to the end of August 2017.The Amatrice-Visso-Norcia is the most important seismic sequence since 2015, the time when the analysis procedures of the BSI group (Bollettino Sismico Italiano) were revised (Nardi et al., 2015). BSI is now available every four months on the web: bulletins contain revised earthquakes (location and magnitude) with ML≥ 1.5, quasi-real time revision of ML≥ 3.5 earthquakes and phase arrivals from waveforms recorded on seismic stations available from the European Integrated Data Archive (EIDA), (Mazza et al., 2012). These last procedures allow the integration of signals from temporary seismic stations (Moretti et al., 2014) installed by the emergency group SISMIKO (Moretti and Sismiko working group, 2016), even when they are not in real time transmission, if they are rapidly archived in EIDA, together with real time signals from the seismic stations of the permanent INGV network. The analysis strategy of the BSI group for the Amatrice -Visso - Norcia seismic sequence (AVN.s.s in the following) was to select the earthquakes located in the box with min/max latitude: 42.2/43.2 - and min/max longitude: 12.4/14.1 to prepare a special volume of BSI on the seismic sequence.PublishedTrieste, Italy1SR.     The Parametric, Psychological, Neuropsychological, and Neuroanatomical Properties of Self and World Evaluation

    Background: As an individual moves from adolescence to adulthood, they need to form a new sense of self as their environment changes from a limited to a more expansive structure. During this critical stage in development the last dramatic steps of neural development occur and numerous psychiatric conditions begin to manifest. Currently, there is no measure that aids in the quantification of how the individual is adapting to, and conceptualizing their role in, these new structures. To fill this gap we created the Self and World Evaluation Expressions Test(SWEET). Method: Sixty-five young adults (20.6 years-old), 36 with a history of drug use, completed the SWEET. A factor analysis was performed on the SWEET and the resultant factors were correlated with psychological, neuropsychological, and neuroanatomical battery that included both T1-wieghted and diffusion tensor magnetic resonance imaging scans. Results: We derived four factors: Self, Social-Emotional, Financial-Intellectual, and Spirituality. While showing limited relationships to psychological and neuropsychological measures, both white matter integrity and gray matter density showed significant relationships with SWEET factors. Conclusions: These findings suggest that while individual responses may not be indicative of psychological or cognitive processes they may relate to changes in brain structure.     Colorectal Cancer Stage at Diagnosis Before vs During the COVID-19 Pandemic in Italy

    IMPORTANCE Delays in screening programs and the reluctance of patients to seek medical attention because of the outbreak of SARS-CoV-2 could be associated with the risk of more advanced colorectal cancers at diagnosis. OBJECTIVE To evaluate whether the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic was associated with more advanced oncologic stage and change in clinical presentation for patients with colorectal cancer. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS This retrospective, multicenter cohort study included all 17 938 adult patients who underwent surgery for colorectal cancer from March 1, 2020, to December 31, 2021 (pandemic period), and from January 1, 2018, to February 29, 2020 (prepandemic period), in 81 participating centers in Italy, including tertiary centers and community hospitals. Follow-up was 30 days from surgery. EXPOSURES Any type of surgical procedure for colorectal cancer, including explorative surgery, palliative procedures, and atypical or segmental resections. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES The primary outcome was advanced stage of colorectal cancer at diagnosis. Secondary outcomes were distant metastasis, T4 stage, aggressive biology (defined as cancer with at least 1 of the following characteristics: signet ring cells, mucinous tumor, budding, lymphovascular invasion, perineural invasion, and lymphangitis), stenotic lesion, emergency surgery, and palliative surgery. The independent association between the pandemic period and the outcomes was assessed using multivariate random-effects logistic regression, with hospital as the cluster variable. RESULTS A total of 17 938 patients (10 007 men [55.8%]; mean [SD] age, 70.6 [12.2] years) underwent surgery for colorectal cancer: 7796 (43.5%) during the pandemic period and 10 142 (56.5%) during the prepandemic period. Logistic regression indicated that the pandemic period was significantly associated with an increased rate of advanced-stage colorectal cancer (odds ratio [OR], 1.07; 95%CI, 1.01-1.13; P = .03), aggressive biology (OR, 1.32; 95%CI, 1.15-1.53; P &lt; .001), and stenotic lesions (OR, 1.15; 95%CI, 1.01-1.31; P = .03). CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE This cohort study suggests a significant association between the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic and the risk of a more advanced oncologic stage at diagnosis among patients undergoing surgery for colorectal cancer and might indicate a potential reduction of survival for these patients

    Nel secondo quadrimestre 2015 si sono verificati 7 eventi di magnitudo superiore a 4: il 9 maggio un evento di ML 4.5 è stato localizzato nel basso Tirreno ad una profondità di circa 217 km; l’11 maggio un terremoto di Mw 4.4 nel Mar Ionio a circa 47 km di profondità; il 29 maggio un Mw 4.2 nel Mar Adriatico di fronte a San Benedetto del Tronto; il 2 agosto un evento di magnitudo ML4.0 nel Mar Tirreno, al largo della costa calabra occidentale, ad una profondità di circa 247 km e il 3 agosto un terremoto di magnitudo ML 4.0 tra le province di Cosenza e Catanzaro a sud della Sila, seguito da una sequenza di oltre 80 repliche di piccola magnitudo.
