    A Cognitive-Based Indicator of Deviant Sexual Arousal: Concurrent Validation of the Emotional Stroop

    One of the strongest dynamic predictors of sexual recidivism among sex offenders is deviant sexual arousal (DSA; Hanson & Bussiére, 1998). Phallometric testing, the most commonly used method of assessing DSA, has elicited numerous methodological, ethical, and financial criticisms, while self-report measures are vulnerable to social desirability and lack of self-awareness. In an effort to overcome the limitations of previous measures of DSA, researchers have employed cognitive measures including a modified version of the Stroop task to measure DSA among sexual offenders (Price & Hanson, 2007; Smith & Waterman, 2004). These original studies used victim selection to assess the concurrent validity of the Stroop as a measure of DSA. However this assumes that victim selection is based upon DSA, which is not always the case. Therefore the research to date evaluating the Stroop as a measure of DSA has been inconclusive at best. Thus, the current validation study explored the ability of the Stroop task to assess DSA by comparing deviant Stroop latency to self-reported DSA among a non-offending sample of 570 females and 223 males. The results indicated a significant relationship between self-reported deviance and deviant Stroop performance, suggesting that the Stroop is a viable option for assessing DSA. The results have far reaching implications for sex offender risk assessment, as validation of a non-invasive, cognitive measure would allow clinicians to more quickly and ethically assess sexual offenders for risk of reoffending by evaluating their level of DSA

    A three-wave longitudinal study on the underlying metacognitive mechanism between depression and Internet gaming disorder

    AbstractBackground and aims: Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD) and depression have negative consequences on individuals' mental health, but their relationships are complex. This three-wave longitudinal study aimed to detect the metacognitive mechanisms underlying the association between IGD tendency and depression based on the self-regulatory executive function model. Methods: A total of 1,243 Chinese undergraduate student gamers (57% female, M = 19.77, SD = 1.29) were recruited at the baseline survey (Wave 1 [W1]), with 622 and 574 of them taking part in the two follow-up surveys (Wave 2 [W2] at 6 and Wave 3 [W3] at 12 months later), respectively. Results: The three-wave path model demonstrated, after controlling for the autoregressive effect of each variable, that depression consistently predicted IGD tendency but not vice versa, while negative but not positive metacognitions about online gaming (MOG) significantly predicted both depression and IGD tendency. Moreover, two statistically significant mediation paths: (i) negative MOG [W1] → depression [W2] → IGD tendency [W3]; and (ii) depression [W1] → negative MOG [W2] → IGD tendency [W3] were identified. Discussion and conclusions: These findings extend the understanding of the associations among depression, IGD tendency, and MOG, highlighting how negative MOG has a stronger prospective effect than positive MOG on depression and IGD tendency, and also reveal the mutual mediation effects of depression and negative MOG on IGD tendency. Integrated programmes with both emotional regulation training and Metacognitive Therapy are recommended for IGD treatment

    Creep, Relaxation and Viscosity Properties for Basic Fractional Models in Rheology

    The purpose of this paper is twofold: from one side we provide a general survey to the viscoelastic models constructed via fractional calculus and from the other side we intend to analyze the basic fractional models as far as their creep, relaxation and viscosity properties are considered. The basic models are those that generalize via derivatives of fractional order the classical mechanical models characterized by two, three and four parameters, that we refer to as Kelvin-Voigt, Maxwell, Zener, anti-Zener and Burgers. For each fractional model we provide plots of the creep compliance, relaxation modulus and effective viscosity in non dimensional form in terms of a suitable time scale for different values of the order of fractional derivative. We also discuss the role of the order of fractional derivative in modifying the properties of the classical models.Comment: 41 pages, 8 figure

    Crustal Velocity Structure in Italy from Analysis of Regional Seismic Waveforms

    In this paper, we use regional seismic waveforms recorded by the recently-installed Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV) national network and the Mediterranean Very Broadband Seismographic Network (MedNet) stations to develop one-dimensional (1-D) crustal velocity models for the Italian peninsula. About 55,000 P -wave and 35,000 S -wave arrival times from 4,727 events are used to derive average seismic parameters in the crust and uppermost mantle. We define four regions, according to geological constraints and recent travel-time tomography results. Based on the average seismic parameters, we combine broadband seismic waveforms and travel-times of regional phases to model crustal structures for the four regions by applying the genetic algorithm. Our results indicate smooth velocity gradients with depth beneath the Apennines, and a deep Moho beneath the central Alps. Green’s functions from the regionalized 1-D velocity models are used to determine source depths and focal mechanisms for 37 events with magnitude larger than 3.5 by a grid search technique. Our results show that normal and strike-slip faulting source mechanisms dominate the Apenninic belt and most thrust faulting events occur in the Adriatic sea and the outer margin of the northern Apennines

    The multi-domain protein Np95 connects DNA methylation and histone modification

    DNA methylation and histone modifications play a central role in the epigenetic regulation of gene expression and cell differentiation. Recently, Np95 (also known as UHRF1 or ICBP90) has been found to interact with Dnmt1 and to bind hemimethylated DNA, indicating together with genetic studies a central role in the maintenance of DNA methylation. Using in vitro binding assays we observed a weak preference of Np95 and its SRA (SET- and Ring-associated) domain for hemimethylated CpG sites. However, the binding kinetics of Np95 in living cells was not affected by the complete loss of genomic methylation. Investigating further links with heterochromatin, we could show that Np95 preferentially binds histone H3 N-terminal tails with trimethylated (H3K9me3) but not acetylated lysine 9 via a tandem Tudor domain. This domain contains three highly conserved aromatic amino acids that form an aromatic cage similar to the one binding H3K9me3 in the chromodomain of HP1ss. Mutations targeting the aromatic cage of the Np95 tandem Tudor domain (Y188A and Y191A) abolished specific H3 histone tail binding. These multiple interactions of the multi-domain protein Np95 with hemimethylated DNA and repressive histone marks as well as with DNA and histone methyltransferases integrate the two major epigenetic silencing pathways

    Whom to Punish? How observers sanction norm-violating behavior in ostracism situations

    When observing ostracism, individuals can either side with the target or the sources of ostracism. Here we demonstrate that side-taking depends on whether the target previously acted in adherence to or in violation of perceived social norms. In four studies, a target behaved either norm-consistently or violated a social norm, and was subsequently either excluded by the sources or was not. Next, participants could sanction the behavior of the observed persons by refraining to assign money (Studies 1 and 2), or by subtracting money from a bonus (Studies 3 and 4). Observers assigned less money to the sources when these excluded a norm-consistent target. However, when the target had violated a social norm before, participants assigned less money to the target instead. These results have far-reaching implications because the (in)actions of neutral individuals can legitimize the sources' behavior, or help a target under attack

    Random walk through fractal environments

    We analyze random walk through fractal environments, embedded in 3-dimensional, permeable space. Particles travel freely and are scattered off into random directions when they hit the fractal. The statistical distribution of the flight increments (i.e. of the displacements between two consecutive hittings) is analytically derived from a common, practical definition of fractal dimension, and it turns out to approximate quite well a power-law in the case where the dimension D of the fractal is less than 2, there is though always a finite rate of unaffected escape. Random walks through fractal sets with D less or equal 2 can thus be considered as defective Levy walks. The distribution of jump increments for D > 2 is decaying exponentially. The diffusive behavior of the random walk is analyzed in the frame of continuous time random walk, which we generalize to include the case of defective distributions of walk-increments. It is shown that the particles undergo anomalous, enhanced diffusion for D_F < 2, the diffusion is dominated by the finite escape rate. Diffusion for D_F > 2 is normal for large times, enhanced though for small and intermediate times. In particular, it follows that fractals generated by a particular class of self-organized criticality (SOC) models give rise to enhanced diffusion.
