    Influence of slow sand filter cleaning process type on filter media biomass: backwashing versus scraping

    Biomass was assessed as a new approach for evaluating backwashed slow sand filters (BSF). Slow sand filtration (SSF) is a simple technology for water treatment, where biological mechanisms play a key role in filtration efficiency. Backwashed slow sand filters were previously recommended for small-scale filters (~1 m² of filtration area) as an alternative to conventional filters that are usually cleaned by scraping (ScSF). Biomass was never evaluated in BSF, which is a gap in the knowledge of this technology, considering the importance of its biological mechanisms. Therefore, for the first time, two filters operating under the same conditions were used to compare the influence of backwashing on biomass; one filter was cleaned by backwashing and the other by scraping. Biomass along the filter media depth (40 cm) was assessed by different techniques and compared in terms of cellular biomass (by chloroform fumigation), volatile solids, bacterial community (by 16S rRNA gene sequencing), and observations by scanning electron and fluorescence microscopy. Filters were also monitored and compared regarding filtered water quality and headloss; their differences were related to the different cleaning processes. Overall, filtered water quality was acceptable for slow sand filter standards (turbidity 1 log). However, headloss developed faster on scraped filters, and biomass was different between the two filters. Backwashing did not significantly disturb biomass while scraping changed its surface sand layers. Cell biomass was more abundant and spread across the filtration depth, related to lower headloss, turbidity, and cyanobacterial breakthrough. These results agreed with the water quality and microscopy observations. The bacterial community was also less stratified in the backwashed filter media. These results expand the knowledge of backwashing use in slow sand filters, demonstrating that this process preserves more biomass than scraping. In addition, biomass preservation can lead to bacterial selectivity and faster filter ripening. Considering the importance of biomass preservation on slow sand filtration and its biological filtration mechanisms, the results presented in this paper are promising. The novel insight that BSF can preserve biomass after backwashing may contribute to increasing its application in small communities

    Fatores associados a sintomas depressivos em estudantes do ensino médio de São Paulo, Brasil

    OBJECTIVE: To assess factors associated with depression symptoms in high school students. METHODS: A cross-sectional study involving high school students was conducted in the city of São Paulo, Brazil, 2001. A total of 724 students aged 14-18 years answered questionnaires on life and health conditions. Another questionnaire was applied to working (44.8%) and unemployed (22.9%) students to collect information on working conditions. Factors associated to depressive disorders were analyzed using multiple logistic regression controlled for occupational status. RESULTS: Overall prevalence rate of depression was 7.5%. Rates according to gender were 39 (10.3%) in females and 15 (4.3%) in males. The multiple logistic regression analysis showed that factors associated with depressive disorders were: poor self-perception of health (OR=5.78), being female (OR = 2.45), and alcohol consumption (OR=2.35). CONCLUSIONS: The study results showed that sociodemographic, lifestyle and health variables were associated with symptoms of depression in this population. These ndings suggest that it is important to have mental health professionals available in high schools for early detection of mental conditions and student counseling.OBJETIVO: Investigar os fatores associados a sintomas depressivos em estudantes do ensino médio. MÉTODOS: Foi realizado estudo transversal com estudantes residentes no Município de São Paulo, Brasil, em 2001. O total de 724 estudantes com idades entre 14 e 18 anos preencheram questionários de condições de vida e saúde. Dentre eles, os estudantes trabalhadores (44,8%) e desempregados (22,9%) também responderam a um outro questionário de condições de trabalho. A regressão logística foi utilizada para determinar os fatores associados para apresentar distúrbios depressivos, utilizando-se a "situação ocupacional" para ajustar o modelo. RESULTADOS: A prevalência dos sintomas depressivos na população estudada foi de 7,5%; as taxas de acordo com o sexo foram de 39 (10,3%) e 15 (4,3%) nos adolescentes dos sexos feminino e masculino, respectivamente. A regressão logística mostrou que os fatores associados aos distúrbios depressivos são: baixo escore na auto-avaliação da saúde (OR=5,78), ser do sexo feminino (OR=2,45) e consumo de bebidas alcoólicas (OR=2,35). CONCLUSÕES: Os resultados mostraram que variáveis sociodemográficas, de estilo de vida e de saúde estavam associadas aos distúrbios depressivos. Esses achados sugerem a importância de que profissionais de saúde mental em escolas de ensino médio efetuem rastreio para reconhecer precocemente problemas mentais e fornecer aconselhamento aos estudantes.FAPESPCNP

    Inhibition of mouse and rat lymphoproliferation by gangliosides

    Our previous study have demonstrated that Glycosphingolipids (GSLs) have an immunosuppressive effect on murine lymphoproliferation and IL-2 production. In the present study we examined the effect of a pool of Gangliosides (Gang) on spleen lymphocyte proliferation from either isogeneic strains of Wistar rats or BALB/c mice. Two hundred-fifty grams adult female isogeneic Wistar rats and 8-week-old BALB/c mice were used. The animals were sacrificed and the spleen harvested aseptically for cellular assays. Spleen cells suspensions were obtained by homogenization in RPMI 1640 with a loose tissue grinder. After washing, the cells were suspended in RPMI 1640 supplemented. Cell viability was measured by Trypan blue exclusion. Cells were cultured in triplicate using increasing concentrations of Gang (1; 2; 5; 10; 15; 20 mug/well) and in the presence of Concanavalin A. The cells were incubated for 48 hours and were pulsed with [³H] thymidine 18 hours prior to harvesting on glass fiber paper for counting in a beta-counter. Data were presented as rate of inhibition, as previously described. At concentrations 1 and 2 mug/well, Gang stimulated lymphoproliferation (30% and 50%, rats and mice respectively), while at concentration from 5 to 20 mug/well an increasing inhibition was observed for spleen cells from both mouse and rat (from 40% up to 80%). In preliminary studies we observed inhibition of mixed lymphocyte reaction on spleen cells from rats treated with Gang for 10 days (data not shown).     Classification of glomerular hypercellularity using convolutional features and support vector machine

    Glomeruli are histological structures of the kidney cortex formed by interwoven blood capillaries, and are responsible for blood filtration. Glomerular lesions impair kidney filtration capability, leading to protein loss and metabolic waste retention. An example of lesion is the glomerular hypercellularity, which is characterized by an increase in the number of cell nuclei in different areas of the glomeruli. Glomerular hypercellularity is a frequent lesion present in different kidney diseases. Automatic detection of glomerular hypercellularity would accelerate the screening of scanned histological slides for the lesion, enhancing clinical diagnosis. Having this in mind, we propose a new approach for classification of hypercellularity in human kidney images. Our proposed method introduces a novel architecture of a convolutional neural network (CNN) along with a support vector machine, achieving near perfect average results with the FIOCRUZ data set in a binary classification (lesion or normal). Our deep-based classifier outperformed the state-of-the-art results on the same data set. Additionally, classification of hypercellularity sub-lesions was also performed, considering mesangial, endocapilar and both lesions; in this multi-classification task, our proposed method just failed in 4\% of the cases.     Deficits in emotion recognition as markers of frontal behavioral dysfunction in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis

    Objective: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a neurodegenerative disease with prominent motor symptoms. Patients with ALS may also manifest frontal behavior symptoms and cognitive decline, including impairment in facial emotion recognition. The authors aimed to investigate whether deficits in emotion recognition were associated with frontal behavior symptoms in ALS. Methods: Participants were patients with probable or definite sporadic ALS (N521; male:female ratio, 11:10; median age, 62 years; median disease duration, 3 years) and agematched and education-matched healthy control subjects (N525; male:female ratio, 14:11; median age, 61 years). The Facial Emotion Recognition Test (FERT) was administered to all participants. Patients with ALS were assessed using the Cambridge Behavior Inventory-Revised and were classified into two groups according to the presence of frontal behavioral symptoms: ALS with no behavioral symptom (ALSns; N59) and ALS with at least one behavioral symptom (ALSbs; N512). Results: Apathy and mood symptoms were the most frequent neuropsychiatric symptoms in the patient group. Patients with ALS performed worse than control subjects in the recognition of sadness (p,0.004). There were no differences between control subjects and patients in the ALSns group in all FERT scores, but the ALSbs group had lower performance than control subjects in sadness (p,0.003). Conclusions: Emotion recognition deficit may be a marker of frontal behavior in ALS

    Addressing drinking water salinity due to sea water intrusion in Praia de Leste, Parana, by a brackish water desalination pilot plant

    Seawater intrusion into the Pombas River, source of freshwater to Praia de Leste on the coast of Parana in Brazil presents a problem to the water utility as most water treatment plants in Brazil are conventional. To find a solution to this problem, a pilot plant (1 m3 /h) consisting of ultrafiltration (UF) followed by reverse osmosis (RO) was developed and evaluated. For testing, brackish water was produced with a concentration of 1,500 ± 100 mg/L of total dissolved solids (TDS), mixing seawater and fresh water. To evaluate the water quality, TDS, electrical conductivity, pH, temperature, apparent color, turbidity, alkalinity, total hardness, calcium, chloride and sulfate were monitored. For operational performance, flowrates, osmotic pressure, filtration rate, recovery rate and mass balance were analyzed. On average, the UF system removed 96.4% of turbidity and 98.6% of apparent color; whereas the RO system removed 99.4% of TDS. The overall average recovery (UF and RO) was 45.81% with average osmotic pressure of 8.21 bar, filtration rate of 30.7 L/h/m2 in the UF system and 21.7 L/h/m2 in the RO system.     Serological survey for rabies in serum samples from vampire bats (Desmodus rotundus) in Botucatu region, SP, Brazil

    The chiropterans constitute 25% of the world's mammal fauna. Due to the destruction of their natural ecosystem, the vampire bats have moved from nature to artificial roosts closer to man and domestic animals. This phenomenon has happened particularly in rural areas. Rabies is a viral anthropozoonosis, 100% lethal, and vampire bats (Desmodus rotundus) represent an important role in its epidemiology. D. rotundus were captured at night with mesh nets in partnership with the Botucatu Defense Office and sent to the Zoonosis Diagnostic Service, at the School of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Husbandry, UNESP. Serum samples from 204 bats were analyzed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and fluorescent antibody viral neutralization test (FAVN) for rabies antibody detection. The results showed 7.4% of sera with titers higher or equal to 0.5 U for rabies antibodies, which demonstrated viral flow circulation among the studied region. Data suggest a need for constant monitoring accomplished by epidemiological and sanitary measures

    Perfil da fluência: comparação entre falantes do Português Brasileiro e do Português Europeu

    The purpose of the study was to compare the speech fluency of Brazilian Portuguese speakers with that of European Portuguese speakers. The study participants were 76 individuals of any ethnicity or skin color aged 18–29 years. Of the participants, 38 lived in Brazil and 38 in Portugal. Speech samples from all participants were obtained and analyzed according to the variables of typology and frequency of speech disruptions and speech rate. Descriptive and inferential statistical analyses were performed to assess the association between the fluency profile and linguistic variant variables. We found that the speech rate of European Portuguese speakers was higher than the speech rate of Brazilian Portuguese speakers in words per minute (p=0.004). The qualitative distribution of the typology of common dysfluencies (p<0.001) also discriminated between the linguistic variants. While a speech fluency profile of European Portuguese speakers is not available, speech therapists in Portugal can use the same speech fluency assessment as has been used in Brazil to establish a diagnosis of stuttering, especially in regard to typical and stuttering dysfluencies, with care taken when evaluating the speech rate.O objetivo do estudo foi comparar a fluência de fala de falantes do Português Brasileiro com a de falantes do Português Europeu. Participaram deste estudo 76 indivíduos, sem distinção de raça e cor, com idades entre 18 e 29 anos, sendo 38 residentes no Brasil e 38 em Portugal. Foram obtidas amostras de fala de todos os participantes e analisadas segundo as variáveis de tipologia e frequência das disfluências e velocidade de fala. Foi realizada análise estatística descritiva e inferencial para verificar a associação entre as variáveis do perfil da fluência e da variante linguística. Foi observado que a velocidade de fala dos falantes do Português Europeu em palavras por minuto (p=0,004) é maior que a dos falantes do Português Brasileiro. A distribuição qualitativa das tipologias das disfluências comuns (p<0,001) também diferencia as variantes linguísticas. Enquanto não há um perfil de fluência de fala dos falantes do Português Europeu, para se estabelecer um diagnóstico de gagueira, os fonoaudiólogos podem utilizar em Portugal a mesma avaliação de fluência de fala utilizada no Brasil, principalmente no que se refere às disfluências comuns e gagas, tendo cuidado apenas no que se refere à velocidade de falaFundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de Minas Gerais (CDS – APQ – 02141-11)info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
