    The effect of elastic abdominal binder use on respiratory function on persons with high spinal cord injury at orthostatic position

    Introduction : Spinal cord injury causes respiratory muscles paralysis, especially in high thoracic paraplegia and tetraplegia with injury above or right on the sixth thoracic segment, and also biomechanics, volumes, capacities and respiratory pressures changes in affected people. The elastic abdominal binder provides a mechanical support for respiratory function treatment, assisting with abdominal restraint and abdominal compliance reduction while at orthostatic position. Objective : To verify the elastic abdominal binder effect on the respiratory function of people with spinal cord injuries during standing position with the help of orthostatic table, from vertical angle position of 60° and 90°. Method : The study included 56 people suffering from spinal cord injury with motor level above or right on the sixth thoracic segment. They were randomly divided into four distinct groups regarding the use or not of the binder and different inclinations of the orthostatic table during the evaluation procedure. The measured outcomes were vital capacity, tidal volume, inspiratory and expiratory pressure and oxygen saturation. The descriptive analysis presented according to average and standard deviation or median and interquartile. For the outcomes analysis of the five evaluations, the Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) of two factors with repeated measures was used. Statistical significance was set at 5%. Results : The values obtained from respiratory parameters showed no statistical significance regarding the elastic abdominal binder intervention nor on the angle of the standing position. Conclusion : There was no contrasting effect regarding the use of the binder among the evaluated people, therefore it should not be nominated as a standard procedure in the treatment of spinal cord injury at orthostatic position. However, this procedure should not be absolute contraindicated, thus its effect has not demonstrated any harm to participants. Introdução : A lesão da medula espinhal ocasiona paralisia dos músculos respiratórios, principalmente na tetraplegia e paraplegia torácica alta, com lesão acima ou igual ao sextosegmento torácico, e assim mudanças na biomecânica, volumes, capacidades e pressões respiratórias das pessoas acometidas. A cinta abdominal elástica proporciona um suporte mecânico ao tratamento e cuidados com as alterações da função respiratória destas pessoas, podendo auxiliar na contenção abdominal, reduzindo a complacência abdominal durante a posição ortostática. Objetivo : Verificar os efeitos que a cinta abdominal elástica proporciona à função respiratória das pessoas com lesão medular posicionadas em ortostatismo com auxílio da mesa ortostática, a partir da posição a 60° e 90° de angulação vertical. Método : Participaram deste estudo 56 pessoas acometidas por lesão medular com nível motor igual ou acima do sexto segmento torácico, divididos aleatoriamente em quatro grupos distintos em relação ao uso ou não da cinta e angulações da mesa ortostática durante o procedimento de avaliação. Os desfechos mensurados foram capacidade vital, volume corrente, pressão inspiratória e expiratória máxima e saturação de oxigênio. A análise descritiva apresentou-se por meio de média e desvio padrão ou mediana e interquartis. Para análise dos desfechos nos cinco momentos avaliados utilizou-se a Análise de Variância (ANOVA) de dois fatores com medidas repetidas. A significância estatística foi estipulada em 5%. Resultados : Os valores encontrados para os parâmetros respiratórios avaliados demonstraram que não houve significância estatística em relação à intervenção cinta abdominal elástica e à angulação do ortostatismo. Conclusão : Não houve efeito diferencial em relação ao uso da cinta nas pessoas avaliadas, não podendo ser indicada como um procedimento padrão para as abordagens de tratamento na posição ortostática na lesão medular espinhal. Em contrapartida, este procedimento não deve ser uma contraindicação absoluta, pois, seu efeito não demonstrou malefícios aos participantes

    Quantum discord determines the interferometric power of quantum states

    Quantum metrology exploits quantum mechanical laws to improve the precision in estimating technologically relevant parameters such as phase, frequency, or magnetic fields. Probe states are usually tailored to the particular dynamics whose parameters are being estimated. Here we consider a novel framework where quantum estimation is performed in an interferometric configuration, using bipartite probe states prepared when only the spectrum of the generating Hamiltonian is known. We introduce a figure of merit for the scheme, given by the worst-case precision over all suitable Hamiltonians, and prove that it amounts exactly to a computable measure of discord-type quantum correlations for the input probe. We complement our theoretical results with a metrology experiment, realized in a highly controllable room-temperature nuclear magnetic resonance setup, which provides a proof-of-concept demonstration for the usefulness of discord in sensing applications. Discordant probes are shown to guarantee a nonzero phase sensitivity for all the chosen generating Hamiltonians, while classically correlated probes are unable to accomplish the estimation in a worst-case setting. This work establishes a rigorous and direct operational interpretation for general quantum correlations, shedding light on their potential for quantum technology

    Avaliação da capacidade preditiva da circunferência da cintura para obesidade global e hipertensão arterial em mulheres residentes na Região Metropolitana de Belo Horizonte, Brasil

    Avaliou-se a capacidade que a Circunferência da Cintura (CC) tem em identificar valores de IMC ≥25 (sobrepeso) e ≥30 (obesidade) a partir de níveis de ação recomendados internacionalmente. Setecentas e noventa e uma mulheres entre 15-59 anos foram recrutadas. Foram calculadas a sensibilidade e a especificidade no diagnóstico de sobrepeso e obesidade e a sensibilidade e especificidade na predição da hipertensão, a partir de valores de CC. As associações foram testadas por análise de regressão linear e regressão logística controlando para o efeito de fatores de confusão. A CC ≥80 e ≥88cm discriminou corretamente 89,8% de mulheres com IMC ≥25 e 88,5% com IMC ≥30. A obesidade abdominal (CC ≥88cm) esteve associada significativamente com a hipertensão na análise multivariada (OR = 2,88, IC 95%: 1,77-4,67). A hipertensão foi identificada com sensibilidade de 63,8 e 42,8% e especificidade de 68,0 e 83,3% para CC ≥80 e ≥88, respectivamente. A obesidade abdominal nos pontos de corte propostos pode discriminar adequadamente indivíduos em risco de se tornarem obesos, no entanto, apresenta um poder apenas moderado para discriminar indivíduos com níveis pressóricos altos. _______________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACTThis study examined the capacity of waist circumference (WC) to identify subjects with overweight (BMI ≥25) and obesity (BMI ≥30), in agreement with internationally recommended levels of action. Data were obtained from 791 women, 15-59 years old. After identifying overweight and obesity according to WC values, sensitivity and specificity were calculated to verify whether WC could be a good risk predictor for hypertension. Associations were tested by linear regression and logistic regression, controlling for confounding.WC cut-off points of 80cm and 88cm correctly identified 89.8% and 88.5% of women with overweight and obesity, respectively. Abdominal obesity (WC ≥88cm) was statistically associated with hypertension in the multivariate analysis (OR = 2.88; 95% CI: 1.77-4.67). Hypertension was identified with a sensitivity of 63.8% and 42.8%, and with a specificity of 68.0% and 83.3%, for WC ≥80 and ≥88, respectively. The proposed cut-off points for abdominal obesity can potentially distinguish individuals at risk for future obesity, but has only moderate power to predict individuals with high blood pressure

    In vitro activity of daptomycin, linezolid and rifampicin on Staphylococcus epidermidis biofilms

    Owing to their massive use, Staphylococcus epidermidis has recently developed significant resistance to several antibiotics, and became one of the leading causes of hospital-acquired infections. Current antibiotics are typically ineffective in the eradication of bacteria in biofilmassociated persistent infections. Accordingly, the paucity of effective treatment against cells in this mode of growth is a key factor that potentiates the need for new agents active in the prevention or eradication of biofilms. Daptomycin and linezolid belong to the novel antibiotic therapies that are active against gram-positive cocci. On the other hand, rifampicin has been shown to be one of the most potent, prevalent antibiotics against S. epidermidis biofilms. Therefore, the main aim of this study was to study the susceptibility of S. epidermidis biofilm cells to the two newer antimicrobial agents previously mentioned, and compare the results obtained with the antimicrobial effect of rifampicin, widely used in the prevention/treatment of indwelling medical device infections. To this end the in vitro activities of daptomycin, linezolid, and rifampicin on S. epidermidis biofilms were accessed, using these antibiotics at MIC and peak serum concentrations. The results demonstrated that at MIC concentration, rifampicin was the most effective antibiotic tested. At peak serum concentration, both strains demonstrated similar susceptibility to rifampicin and daptomycin, with colony-forming units (CFUs) reductions of approximately 3–4 log10, with a slightly lower response to linezolid, which was also more strain dependent. However, considering all the parameters studied, daptomycin was considered the most effective antibiotic tested, demonstrating an excellent in vitro activity against S. epidermidis biofilm cells.     Whales, dolphins or fishes? The ethnotaxonomy of cetaceans in São Sebastião, Brazil

    The local knowledge of human populations about the natural world has been addressed through ethnobiological studies, especially concerning resources uses and their management. Several criteria, such as morphology, ecology, behavior, utility and salience, have been used by local communities to classify plants and animals. Studies regarding fishers' knowledge on cetaceans in the world, especially in Brazil, began in the last decade. Our objective is to investigate the folk classification by fishers concerning cetaceans, and the contribution of fishers' local knowledge to the conservation of that group. In particular, we aim to record fishers' knowledge in relation to cetaceans, with emphasis on folk taxonomy. The studied area is São Sebastião, located in the southeastern coast of Brazil, where 70 fishers from 14 communities were selected according to their fishing experience and interviewed through questionnaires about classification, nomenclature and ecological aspects of local cetaceans' species. Our results indicated that most fishers classified cetaceans as belonging to the life-form 'fish'. Fishers' citations for the nomenclature of the 11 biological species (10 biological genera), resulted in 14 folk species (3 generic names). Fishers' taxonomy was influenced mostly by the phenotypic and cultural salience of the studied cetaceans. Cultural transmission, vertical and horizontal, was intimately linked to fishers' classification process. The most salient species, therefore well recognized and named, were those most often caught by gillnets, in addition to the biggest ones and those most exposed by media, through TV programs, which were watched and mentioned by fishers. Our results showed that fishers' ecological knowledge could be a valuable contribution to cetaceans' conservation, helping to determine areas and periods for their protection, indicating priority topics for research and participating in alternative management related to the gillnet fisheries

    BPAG1a and b Associate with EB1 and EB3 and Modulate Vesicular Transport, Golgi Apparatus Structure, and Cell Migration in C2.7 Myoblasts

    BPAG1a and BPAG1b (BPAG1a/b) constitute two major isoforms encoded by the dystonin (Dst) gene and show homology with MACF1a and MACF1b. These proteins are members of the plakin family, giant multi-modular proteins able to connect the intermediate filament, microtubule and microfilament cytoskeletal networks with each other and to distinct cell membrane sites. They also serve as scaffolds for signaling proteins that modulate cytoskeletal dynamics. To gain better insights into the functions of BPAG1a/b, we further characterized their C-terminal region important for their interaction with microtubules and assessed the role of these isoforms in the cytoskeletal organization of C2.7 myoblast cells. Our results show that alternative splicing does not only occur at the 5′ end of Dst and Macf1 pre-mRNAs, as previously reported, but also at their 3′ end, resulting in expression of additional four mRNA variants of BPAG1 and MACF1. These isoform-specific C-tails were able to bundle microtubules and bound to both EB1 and EB3, two microtubule plus end proteins. In the C2.7 cell line, knockdown of BPAG1a/b had no major effect on the organization of the microtubule and microfilament networks, but negatively affected endocytosis and maintenance of the Golgi apparatus structure, which became dispersed. Finally, knockdown of BPAG1a/b caused a specific decrease in the directness of cell migration, but did not impair initial cell adhesion. These data provide novel insights into the complexity of alternative splicing of Dst pre-mRNAs and into the role of BPAG1a/b in vesicular transport, Golgi apparatus structure as well as in migration in C2.7 myoblasts
