Book of Abstracts of the 3rd International Conference and Summer School "Numerical Computations: Theory and Algorithms NUMTA-2019"http://si.dimes.unical.it/~yaro/numta2019/pdf/Book_NUMTA2019.pdfVery recently in CaMa, a new set of local indices has been proposed for an urban water distribution network together with a useful mathematical framework that organizes and provides the tools to treat the complex of these local parameters varying from node to node. In this talk, the applicability of such indices to various models of both abstract and real hydraulic networks will be explored through direct numerical computations and hydraulic simulations. Furthermore, starting from explicit data sets for these local parameters and using the tools offered by the mentioned mathematical setting, some well known and very frequently used global energetic indicators will be calculated in a new way and through new formulas (for example, measures of resilience, pressure, deficiency, etc.). Finally, since the tools and the framework proposed in CaMa have the important advantage of favoring in many cases a more in-depth structural analysis of global indices, new interpretations and new implications will be briefly discussed.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

In this paper, we investigate the teaching and reading of literature in brazilian public schools. Based on scientific and empirical foundations from research, discussions and teaching experiences, in these spaces, we have noticed the presence of two asymmetric phenomena: on the one hand, twilight, characterized by the rancidity of teaching units and traditional pedagogical practices, which we call schools of papers; and, on the other, dawn, which points to classroom reading practices, investigations, and events of creative literacy, transforming, empowering the potential readers' subjectivity, analytical ability and humanity. As teachers and researchers in the teaching of literature in basic education, escaping the twilight has become imperative. School plastering and demotivating practices gray the classrooms. It is time to strengthen the paths of a broader dawn of literature reading in these teaching spaces. Evidence that the first rays of the sun are beginning to dawn on the horizon of many schools, we point out practices that value reading subjectivity, as well as research and events that have been promoting the teaching and training of literary readers in the perspective of humanization through the literary text. &nbsp

SAGA reloaded: towards a generic platform for developing cooperative applications

    Get PDF
Groupware specification and development has always been a complex task, requiring special attention to issues such as notification of cooperative actions and ensuring consistency of shared data. Some years ago SAGA was developed as a framework to build groupware applications based on a set of core web services that provide the most common cooperative functionalities. Despite its potential, the last few years brought some technological developments that placed new challenges. This paper presents a new generation of the SAGA platform that adds to the original framework features that emerged recently, namely the regulation of social interaction, incorporation of new communication technologies, connectors to several external services and interaction environments, and the addition of contextual information

Echocardiographic Assessment of Right Ventriculo-arterial Coupling: Clinical Correlates and Prognostic Impact in Heart Failure Patients Undergoing Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy

    Get PDF
Background: Right ventriculo-arterial coupling (RV-PA) can be estimated by echocardiography using the ratio between tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion (TAPSE) and pulmonary artery systolic pressure (PASP) and it has prognostic value in the general heart failure (HF) population. We aimed to study the clinical correlates and prognostic value of RV-PA in HF patients undergoing cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT). Methods: We retrospectively studied 70 HF patients undergoing CRT implantation. Results: RV-PA coupling was estimated by TAPSE/PASP ratio using baseline echocardiography. Non-response to CRT was defined as improvement of left ventricular ejection fraction < 5% in a follow-up echo 6-12 months after CRT. Those with lower TAPSE/PASP ratios (worse RV-PA coupling) had higher NT-proBNP concentrations and increased E/e' ratio. TAPSE/PASP ratio and PASP, but not TAPSE, predicted nonresponse to CRT with TAPSE/PASP ratio showing the best discriminative ability with a sensitivity of 76% and specificity of 71%. Among these parameters, PASP independently predicted all-cause mortality. Conclusions: RV-PA coupling estimated by TAPSE/PASP ratio was associated with established prognostic markers in HF. It numerically outperformed PASP and TAPSE in predicting the response to CRT. Our data suggest that this simple and widely available echocardiographic parameter conveys significant pathophysiological and prognostic meaning in HF patients undergoing CRT.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Data security and trading framework for smart grids in neighborhood area networks

    Get PDF
Due to the drastic increase of electricity prosumers, i.e., energy consumers that are also producers, smart grids have become a key solution for electricity infrastructure. In smart grids, one of the most crucial requirements is the privacy of the final users. The vast majority of the literature addresses the privacy issue by providing ways of hiding user’s electricity consumption. However, open issues in the literature related to the privacy of the electricity producers still remain. In this paper, we propose a framework that preserves the secrecy of prosumers’ identities and provides protection against the traffic analysis attack in a competitive market for energy trade in a Neighborhood Area Network (NAN). In addition, the amount of bidders and of successful bids are hidden from malicious attackers by our framework. Due to the need for small data throughput for the bidders, the communication links of our framework are based on a proprietary communication system. Still, in terms of data security, we adopt the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) 128bit with Exclusive-OR (XOR) keys due to their reduced computational complexity, allowing fast processing. Our framework outperforms the state-of-the-art solutions in terms of privacy protection and trading flexibility in a prosumer-to-prosumer design

Combined search for the Standard Model Higgs boson in pppp collisions at s=7\sqrt{s} = 7 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    Get PDF
A combined search for the Standard Model Higgs boson with the ATLAS detector at the LHC is presented. The datasets used correspond to integrated luminosities from 4.6 fb^-1 to 4.9 fb^-1 of proton-proton collisions collected at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV in 2011. The Higgs boson mass ranges of 111.4 GeV to 116.6 GeV, 119.4 GeV to 122.1 GeV, and 129.2 GeV to 541 GeV are excluded at the 95% confidence level, while the range 120 GeV to 560 GeV is expected to be excluded in the absence of a signal. An excess of events is observed at Higgs boson mass hypotheses around 126 GeV with a local significance of 2.9 standard deviations (sigma). The global probability for the background to produce an excess at least as significant anywhere in the entire explored Higgs boson mass range of 110-600 GeV is estimated to be ~15%, corresponding to a significance of approximately one sigma.Peer Reviewe

Search for nonpointing and delayed photons in the diphoton and missing transverse momentum final state in 8 TeV pppp collisions at the LHC using the ATLAS detector

    Get PDF
A search has been performed, using the full 20.3  fb-1 data sample of 8 TeV proton-proton collisions collected in 2012 with the ATLAS detector at the LHC, for photons originating from a displaced vertex due to the decay of a neutral long-lived particle into a photon and an invisible particle. The analysis investigates the diphoton plus missing transverse momentum final state, and is therefore most sensitive to pair production of long-lived particles. The analysis technique exploits the capabilities of the ATLAS electromagnetic calorimeter to make precise measurements of the flight direction, as well as the time of flight, of photons. No excess is observed over the Standard Model predictions for background. Exclusion limits are set within the context of gauge mediated supersymmetry breaking models, with the lightest neutralino being the next-to-lightest supersymmetric particle and decaying into a photon and gravitino with a lifetime in the range from 250 ps to about 100 ns.Peer Reviewe

Measurement of the dependence of transverse energy production at large pseudorapidity on the hard-scattering kinematics of proton-proton collisions at s=2.76\sqrt{s} = 2.76 TeV with ATLAS

    Get PDF
The relationship between jet production in the central region and the underlying-event activity in a pseudorapidity-separated region is studied in 4.0 pb1^{-1} of s=2.76\sqrt{s} = 2.76 TeV pppp collision data recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The underlying event is characterised through measurements of the average value of the sum of the transverse energy at large pseudorapidity downstream of one of the protons, which are reported here as a function of hard-scattering kinematic variables. The hard scattering is characterised by the average transverse momentum and pseudorapidity of the two highest transverse momentum jets in the event. The dijet kinematics are used to estimate, on an event-by-event basis, the scaled longitudinal momenta of the hard-scattered partons in the target and projectile beam-protons moving toward and away from the region measuring transverse energy, respectively. Transverse energy production at large pseudorapidity is observed to decrease with a linear dependence on the longitudinal momentum fraction in the target proton and to depend only weakly on that in the projectile proton. The results are compared to the predictions of various Monte Carlo event generators, which qualitatively reproduce the trends observed in data but generally underpredict the overall level of transverse energy at forward pseudorapidity.Peer Reviewe
