Relationship between estimation and real motor performance in school-age children
The relationship between estimated and real motor competences was analyzed for several tasks. Participants were 303 children (160 boys and 143 girls), which had between 6 and 10 years of age (M=8.63, SD=1.16). None of the children presented developmental difficulties or learning disabilities, and all attended age-appropriate classes. Children were divided into three groups according to their age: group 1 (N= 102; age range: 6.48-8.01 years); group 2 (N= 101; age range: 8.02-9.22 years); and group 3 (N=100; age range: 9.24-10.93 years).
Children were asked to predict their maximum distance for a locomotor, a manipulative, and a balance task, prior to performing those tasks. Children’s estimations were compared with their real performance to determine their accuracy.
Children had, in general, a tendency to overestimate their performance (standing long jump: 56.11%, kicking: 63.37%, throwing: 73.60%, and Walking Backwards (WB) on a balance beam: 45.21%), and older children tended to be more accurate, except for the manipulative tasks.
Furthermore, the relationship between estimation and real performance in children with different levels of motor coordination (Köperkoordinationstest für Kinder, KTK) was analyzed. The 75 children with the highest score comprised the Highest Motor Coordination (HMC) group, and the 78 children with the lowest score were placed in the Lowest Motor Coordination (LMC) group. There was a tendency for LMC and HMC children to overestimate their skills at all tasks, except for the HMC group at the WB task. Children with the HMC level tended to be more accurate when predicting their motor performance; however, differences in absolute percent error were only significant for the throwing and WB tasks.
In conclusion, children display a tendency to overestimate their performance independently of their motor coordination level and task. This fact may be determinant to the development of their motor competences, since they are more likely to engage and persist in motor tasks, but it might also increase the occurrence of unintended injuries.O objetivo principal deste estudo foi analisar a relação entre a estimativa e a competência motora real, para várias tarefas envolvendo habilidade motoras fundamentais, em 303 crianças (160 rapazes e 143 raparigas) com idades compreendidas entre os 6 e os 10 anos (M=8.43, DP=1.16).
Effects of an Educational Psychomotor Intervention program in preschool children
This research was intended to investigate (test) the effects of an Educational Psychomotor
Therapy in children physical and peers relation self-perceived competence in pre-school, and
analyze through the educator perception the relevance to include the Psychomotor Therapy in
Preschool curriculum. The sample (N=9) consisted of 4 male and 5 female, between 48 and
72 months of age (M= 61.6; SD= 9.53), with normative neurodevelopment and belonging to
the same preschool. An Educational Psychomotor Intervention program was created and
conducted for 2 months, with one week session during 60 min. each, and applied to the group
of children at the same time. Data analysis was performed with descriptive analysis and nonparametric
statistics, using the Wilcoxon statistical test. The results from the data comparison
in pre and post-intervention evaluation showed significant gains in physical self-perceived
competence and non-significant gains in relation with peers’ self-perceived competence. The
Kindergarten Teacher refers significant positive differences in children motor development
and in learning motivation in classroom tasks. She sustained also the inclusion of Educational
Psychomotor Intervention in preschool curriculum. In conclusion, this research provides
interesting results that contribute to increase understanding about Educational Psychomotor
therapy relevance in psychosocial and academic preschool child development, and warns to
further research in this area
O desenvolvimento
do controlo postural é a chave para outros aspectos do desenvolvimento,
nomeadamente dos sistemas visual e vestibular. Assim que a criança se desloca
autonomamente, outras habilidades começam a emergir.
designadamente perceptivo, sócio-emocional e cognitivo.
elevadas
an integrative review
The development of motor competence (MC) is essential in childhood. In this respect, previous studies have found several positive associations of the MC with physical activity, cardiorespiratory fitness, physical fitness, and perceived physical competence, as well as an inverse association with weight status. The lack of MC during this stage might, therefore, compromise the future adoption of active and healthier lifestyles. This review aimed at listing and examining the different instruments that have been used to evaluate MC in typically developing children, pointing the weakness and strengths from the perspective of Physical Education (PE) teachers. A systematic search of six electronic databases was conducted. Research designs included cross-sectional, longitudinal or experimental/quasi-experimental. Forty-two articles were identified according to the inclusion criteria. A preference for quantitative measures (21 studies) was verified comparatively to a more
qualitative approach (13 studies), although eight studies used both measures. Additionally, we have found that 34 studies used standardized protocol tests and eight studies used protocols developed by the authors. In general the protocols exhibited some strong points, however several presented weaknesses that can limit their application in PE classes, such as the excessive amount of time required, the large number of tasks, the ceiling or floor effects, and the fact that not all MC components are simultaneously evaluated. Different instruments and methodologies have been used to evaluate MC. Finally, a quantitative standardized protocol test is suggested, with proper reliability and validity, which can be used by physical education professionals.4811-99FE-2ECD | Luis Paulo Rodriguesinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
SHORT-TERM SOCIAL ISOLATION DOES NOT REDUCE ELEVATED PLUS-MAZE EXPLORATION IN EARLY PROTEIN MALNOURISHED RATS
An increased number of visits and time spent in the open arms of the elevated plus-maze by malnourished rats has been used as indicative of lower anxiety or impulsiveness. In order to study how this behavior profile responds to an anxiogenic procedure (short-term social isolation), control (16% protein) and malnourished (6% protein) rats were socially isolated prior to the test in the maze. Litters (dam plus 6 male 2 female pups) were fed the diets from birth to 49 days of age. From 50 days on, all rats were fed a lab chow diet. Social isolation consists in removing the rats from the group and placing in individual cages for 2h before the test. During the test each rat was individually placed on the center of the maze and allowed to explore for 5 min. The results showed higher open arms exploration and lower attempts to enter open arms by the malnourished rats than by the controls. Social isolation decreased open arm exploration and increased time spent on the central platform in control animals, but had no effect on the malnourished rats. The results reinforce the lower anxiety or higher impulsiveness of malnourished rats, as well as the anxiogenic effect of social isolation in control rats. However, the malnourished rats were unresponsive to the anxiogenic effects of social isolation, indicating that protein deficiency early in life not only induces lower anxiety or higher impulsiveness in the maze, but also changes the behavior of these animals in response to another environmentally-induced procedure of anxiety (social isolation). Objective: To identify how the professional nursing staff of a university hospital interacts to care for their deaf patients. Method: A descriptive, exploratory, and quanti-qualitative study performed in the second semester of 2012. Results: Twenty-one nurses (57%) reported never having provided care for deaf patients. Sixteen nurses (43%) have provided care for deaf patients and reported the following means of communication: 12 (46,15%) referred using mime; 4 (15,38%) mentioned using lip reading; 8 (30,77%) used writing; 1 (3,85%) used drawing and; 1 (3,85%) used an interpreter. Conclusion: It is necessary to take effective measures for nursing professionals to communicate appropriately with deaf patients starting with the offering of specific disciplines in all courses and education programs
Snake venom disintegrins update: insights about new findings
ABSTRACT Snake venom disintegrins are low molecular weight, non-enzymatic proteins rich in cysteine, present in the venom of snakes from the families Viperidae, Crotalidae, Atractaspididae, Elapidae, and Colubridae. This family of proteins originated in venom through the proteolytic processing of metalloproteinases (SVMPs), which, in turn, evolved from a gene encoding an A Disintegrin And Metalloprotease (ADAM) molecule. Disintegrins have a recognition motif for integrins in their structure, allowing interaction with these transmembrane adhesion receptors and preventing their binding to proteins in the extracellular matrix and other cells. This interaction gives disintegrins their wide range of biological functions, including inhibition of platelet aggregation and antitumor activity. As a result, many studies have been conducted in an attempt to use these natural compounds as a basis for developing therapies for the treatment of various diseases. Furthermore, the FDA has approved Tirofiban and Eptifibatide as antiplatelet compounds, and they are synthesized from the structure of echistatin and barbourin, respectively. In this review, we discuss some of the main functional and structural characteristics of this class of proteins and their potential for therapeutic use
