    The aim of study was to assess the prevalence of Treponema pallidum and HIV infection in Amerindian people (Mbya Guarani) over the age of 11 in Puerto Iguazu (Argentina) and to describe the contact tracking of cases. The method was a cross-sectional study in the Mbya Guarani people living in three villages of Puerto Iguazu (community A, pop. 1,146; community B, pop. 369; and community C, pop. 149). Participants were randomly invited to participate in the survey and in blood testing. Of the 551 participants, 48 were infected by T. pallidum (8.71%; 95% confidence interval [CI] 7.38-10.04). The infection prevalence decreased with age, standing at 9.66% in the 11-19 age group, 8.42% in 20-39 age group and 4.54% in people aged 40 and older. We tracked 130 contacts for the 48 T. pallidum cases; 39/40 (97.5%) sexual contacts tested positive for syphilis. Among the 90 children born to infected mothers, 76 aged 18 months or older tested negative, while 8/14 younger children were still at risk for congenital syphilis. There were four cases of HIV infection (0.72%, 95% CI 0.31-1.13). Prevalence of T. pallidum infection and HIV infection are relevant in this indigenous community of Argentina, representing a public health concern

    The MEDESS-GIB database: tracking the Atlantic water inflow

In the frame of the MEDESS-4MS Project (EU MED Program), the MEDESS-GIB experiment consisted of the deployment of 35 satellite tracked drifters, mostly of CODE-type, equipped with temperature sensor sampling at a rate of 30 min. Drifters were distributed along and on both sides of the Strait of Gibraltar. The MEDESS-GIB deployment plan was designed as to ensure quasi-synoptic spatial coverage. To this end, four boats covering an area of about 680NM2 in 6 h were coordinated. As far as these authors know, this experiment is the most important exercise in the area in terms of number of drifters released. Collected satellite-tracked data along drifter trajectories have been quality controlled and processed to build the presented MEDESS-GIB database. This paper reports the MEDESS-GIB data set that comprises drifter trajectories, derived surface currents and in situ SST measurements collected along the buoys tracks. This series of data is available through the PANGAEA (Data Publisher for Earth and Environmental Science) repository, with the following doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.853701. Likewise, the MEDESS-GIB data will be incorporated as part of the Copernicus Marine historical products.     Inducible Slc7a7 Knockout Mouse Model Recapitulates Lysinuric Protein Intolerance Disease

    Lysinuric protein intolerance (LPI) is a rare autosomal disease caused by defective cationic amino acid (CAA) transport due to mutations in SLC7A7, which encodes for the y+LAT1 transporter. LPI patients suffer from a wide variety of symptoms, which range from failure to thrive, hyperammonemia, and nephropathy to pulmonar alveolar proteinosis (PAP), a potentially life-threatening complication. Hyperammonemia is currently prevented by citrulline supplementation. However, the full impact of this treatment is not completely understood. In contrast, there is no defined therapy for the multiple reported complications of LPI, including PAP, for which bronchoalveolar lavages do not prevent progression of the disease. The lack of a viable LPI model prompted us to generate a tamoxifen-inducible Slc7a7 knockout mouse (Slc7a7-/-). The Slc7a7-/- model resembles the human LPI phenotype, including malabsorption and impaired reabsorption of CAA, hypoargininemia and hyperammonemia. Interestingly, the Slc7a7-/- mice also develops PAP and neurological impairment. We observed that citrulline treatment improves the metabolic derangement and survival. On the basis of our findings, the Slc7a7-/- model emerges as a promising tool to further study the complexity of LPI, including its immune-like complications, and to design evidence-based therapies to halt its progression

    Evolution of whispering gallery modes in Li-doped ZnO hexagonal micro- and nanostructures

    The investigated materials have great potential for integrated optoelectronic devices. The possibility to integrate them into the same material as optical resonator and light guide opens the door to the fabrication of highly compact devices. The formation of optical cavities in Li-doped ZnO nanostructures was investigated. By means of the vapor-solid method, long micro- and nanostructures with a hexagonal cross-section were grown. These morphologies were favorable for Fabry-Perot and whispering gallery modes to appear. A variety of structures with different sections was studied using mu-photoluminescence in both the transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) polarizations, showing well-pronounced optical resonant modes. The results showed a dominance of whispering gallery modes that were in good agreement with the calculated refractive index. The quality factor (Q) and finesse (F) were estimated, which demonstrated the quality of Li:ZnO structures as optical cavities

    La presente investigación tiene como finalidad el desarrollo de un plan estratégico para la división de Estados Unidos de Pillsens, una empresa farmacéutica que produce analgésicos y antinflamatorios. El plan busca aumentar las ventas de la compañía en un mercado estancado debido a una guerra de precios. Para lograrlo se establecerá una alianza comercial con CVS, la principal farmacia minorista en dicho país, para desarrollar un nuevo producto en la categoría de nutrición deportiva, además de un plan de marketing para estimular el crecimiento de las ventas con los distribuidores actuales. Se elaboró un estudio de mercado que identificó una oportunidad para impulsar las ventas de Pillsens en Estados Unidos, ya que se proyecta un crecimiento promedio del 4% en las ventas de analgésicos y del 2.69% en las ventas de antioxidantes para el período 2024-2028. Además, se proyecta un crecimiento económico por encima del 5% del PBI. El plan estratégico se enfoca en capturar un mayor porcentaje de ventas a una tasa superior que el crecimiento del mercado de ambos productos. Para ello, se establecerá un plan de acción que incluye actividades agresivas de marketing como una mayor inversión en publicidad, incentivos comerciales y mejoramiento de la asistencia para los clientes B2B. También se propone una alianza estratégica con CVS para incrementar las ventas en un mercado altamente competitivo, alianza que permitiría a ambas empresas explotar sus capacidades y recursos para generar economías de escala en la manufactura

    Printed materials and their use continue to be a concern in terms of environmental sustainability and continuous improvement in universities. Therefore, this research focuses on analyzing the reduction of paper use in higher education to contribute to the care of the environment. A descriptive bibliographic methodology was used, for which a systematic review of scientific articles and portals of international organizations was carried out; concluding that many universities have created awareness about this problem, which has allowed promoting "zero paper" plans in favor of the environment, reducing the use of paper, use of ICT and being attentive to recycling, is considered one of the ways in which universities can help and contribute to global climate change.Los materiales impresos y su uso siguen siendo una preocupación en términos de sostenibilidad ambiental y mejora continua en las universidades. Por ello, esta investigación se centra en analizar la reducción del uso del papel en la educación superior para contribuir con el cuidado del medio ambiente. Se empleó la metodología bibliográfica de corte descriptivo, para lo cual se realizó una revisión sistemática de artículos científicos y portales de organismos internacionales; concluyendo que muchas universidades han creado conciencia acerca de esta problemática, lo que ha permitido impulsar planes de “cero papeles” en pro del medio ambiente, reducir el uso del papel, utilización de las TIC y estar atentos al reciclaje, se considera una de las formas en que las universidades pueden ayudar y contribuir al cambio climático global

    El presente proyecto aborda dos aspectos muy importantes y estrechamente ligados a la adquisición de competencias básicas de cualquier titulación de grado actual y altamente demandadas por los empleadores: la adquisición de habilidades para desarrollar trabajo colaborativo y la capacidad de desarrollar actividades de aprendizaje en línea. Estas últimas tienen una doble función. Por una parte, deben preparar a los estudiantes para ser capaces de gestionar su trabajo, de manera autónoma, con vistas al posible desarrollo de trabajo no presencial, cada vez más importante en muchos entornos laborales. Por otra parte, deber permitirles adquirir las habilidades necesarias para continuar se formación a lo largo de su vida (LLL, Long Life Learning) a través de entornos más informales, pero no por ello menos efectivos, como puede ser el caso de los Massive Online Open Courses (MOOC), ofertados cada vez por más instituciones, con cursos de calidad, impartidos por grandes expertos y con posibilidades de certificación del trabajo realizado

    Current practices and challenges in the diagnosis and management of pku in Latin America: A multicenter survey

    This study aimed to describe the current practices in the diagnosis and dietary management of phenylketonuria (PKU) in Latin America, as well as the main barriers to treatment. We developed a 44-item online survey aimed at health professionals. After a pilot test, the final version was sent to 25 practitioners working with inborn errors of metabolism (IEM) in 14 countries. Our results include 22 centers in 13 countries. Most countries (12/13) screened newborns for PKU. Phenylalanine (Phe) targets at different ages were very heterogeneous among centers, with greater consistency at the 0–1 year age group (14/22 sought 120–240 µmol/L) and the lowest at >12 years (10 targets reported). Most countries had only unflavored powdered amino acid substitutes (10/13) and did not have low-protein foods (8/13). Only 3/13 countries had regional databases of the Phe content of foods, and only 4/22 centers had nutrient analysis software. The perceived obstacles to treatment were: low purchasing power (62%), limited/insufficient availability of low-protein foods (60%), poor adherence, and lack of technical resources to manage the diet (50% each). We observed a heterogeneous scenario in the dietary management of PKU, and most countries experienced a lack of dietary resources for both patients and health professionals.Fil: Poloni, Soraia.
