    Ecosystem modeling to evaluate the ecological sustainability of small-scale fisheries: A case study from El Hierro, Canary Islands

    This paper examines various fishery management scenarios based on the recovery of small-scale fisheries (SSF) following a submarine volcanic eruption in 2011 in El Hierro Island (Canary Islands, Spain). After this catastrophic event, the SSF composition of La Restinga fishing community was affected by socio-economic and demographic changes. The uncertainty derived from this situation provides an opportunity to evaluate the fisheries’ sustainability and advice on different management options under an ecosystem-based approach. The Ecopath with Ecosim modeling framework was used to build a model of El Hierro Island, where the versatile and traditional multispecies small-scale fleet of La Restinga operates. Our main goal is to improve traditional fisheries, based on the relevance of key local fisheries and multi-specific fishery strategies in the light of scientific knowledge. Temporal simulations for the next decade were analyzed by creating scenarios of alternative fishing effort distributions based on the fishing trends observed in El Hierro small-scale community of La Restinga after a natural hazard. The outcomes of this modeling prototype show the vulnerability of some littoral and demersal species, the resilience of migratory species, and the sustainability of SSF diversification practices.     Massage in the prevention and treatment of delayed onset muscle soreness: an updated systematic review

    El masaje es una de las terapias más utilizadas para aliviar el dolor muscular tardío (DMT). El objetivo del presente estudio fue determinar la efectividad del masaje en el tratamiento del DMT, para lo cual se llevó a cabo una revisión sistemática en las bases de datos, Pubmed, Scopus, SportDiscus, Web of Science y el buscador Google académico, usando las palabras clave delayed onset muscle soreness y exercise induced muscle damage combinado con massage. Se incluyeron en el estudio 23 artículos en los cuales el 78% mostró disminución del DMT mientras que en el restante 22% no hubo mejoras o bien empeoró. El análisis de los estudios permite concluir que el masaje es una terapia efectiva en el tratamiento del dolor muscular tardío

    Modeling Optical and Electronic Properties of Silica Nano-Clusters in Silicon Rich Oxide Films

    Quantum effects are very important in nano scale systems such as molecules and clusters constituted of particles from a few to hundreds or a few thousands of atoms. Their optical and electronic properties are often dependent on the size of the systems and the way in which the atoms in these molecules or clusters are bonded. Generally, these nano-structures display optical and electronic properties significantly different of the bulk materials. Silica agglomerates expected in Silicon Rich Oxide (SRO) films have optical properties, which depend directly on size, and their rationalization can lead to new applications with a potential impact on many fields of science and technology. On the other hand, the room temperature photoluminescence (PL) of Si : SiO2 or Si : SiOx structures usually found in SRO has recently generated an enormous interest due to their possible applications in optoelectronic devices. However, the understanding of the emission mechanism is still under debate. In this research, we employed the Density Functional Theory with a functional B3LYP and a basis set 6-31 G* to calculate the electronic and optical properties of molecules and clusters of silicon dioxide. With the theoretical calculation of the structural and optical properties of silicon dioxide clusters is possible to evaluate the contribution of silica in the luminescent emission mechanism experimentally found in thin SRO films. It was found that silica contribution to the luminescent phenomenon in SRO thin films is less important than that of the silicon monoxide agglomerates because the number of silica structures, which may show emission in the visible spectrum, is much lower [1], compared to the number of silicon monoxide structures which emit in this region.     Hepatic Expression of Insulin-Like Growth Factor-1 in Underfed Pregnant Ewes

    The liver is one of the most important visceral organs, which represents a large contribution to whole animal energy expenditure and the major synthetic site of insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) peptide. Decreased plane of nutrition acts by reducing the metabolic rate and mass of metabolic tissues, such as liver. Also, undernutrition results in the reduced circulating IGF-1 concentrations, due to the uncoupled growth hormone-IGF (GH-IGF) axis. This study investigated whether a 22-day period of undernutrition (half maintenance) could affect liver mass and IGF-1 protein and gene expression. Sixteen pregnant ewes fed all (n = 9) or half (n = 7) of their maintenance energy requirements were slaughtered on day 7 of pregnancy (oestrus = day 0). Body and liver mass, IGF-1 plasmatic concentrations and liver IGF-1 mRNA and protein expression were determined. Liver mass and the proportion of liver mass to empty body weight were lower in underfed animals. While IGF-1 plasmatic concentrations were lower in undernourished ewes, no differences in liver mRNA expression were found. This is the first time that differences in immunohistochemistry intensity and total content are reported in sheep. In summary, the decreased plasma IGF-1 concentrations induced by undernutrition in ewes was not associated with its reduced hepatic mRNA or protein expression, but to a decrease in liver mass

    Evaluation of the contribution of D9S1120 to anthropological studies in Native American populations

    The D9S1120 locus exhibits a population-specific allele of 9 repeats (9RA) in all Native American and two Siberian populations currently studied, but it is absent in other worldwide populations. Although this feature has been used in anthropological genetic studies, its impact on the evaluation of the structure and genetic relations among Native American populations has been scarcely assessed. Consequently, the aim of this study was to evaluate the anthropological impact of D9S1120 when it was added to STR population datasets in Mexican Native American groups. We analyzed D9S1120 by PCR and capillary electrophoresis (CE) in 1117 unrelated individuals from 13 native groups from the north and west of Mexico. Additional worldwide populations previously studied with D9S1120 and/or 15 autosomal STRs (Identifier kit) were included for interpopulation analyses. We report statistical results of forensic importance for D9S1120. On average, the modal alleles were the Native American-specific allele 9RA (0.3254) and 16 (0.3362). Genetic distances between Native American and worldwide populations were estimated. When D9S1120 was included in the 15 STR population dataset, we observed improvements for admixture estimation in Mestizo populations and for representing congruent genetic relationships in dendrograms. Analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA) based on D9S1120 confirms that most of the genetic variability in the Mexican population is attributable to their Native American backgrounds, and allows the detection of significant intercontinental differentiation attributed to the exclusive presence of 9RA in America.     Fibrinogen Sevilla, a congenital dysfibrinogenemia characterized by an abnormal monomer aggregation and a defective plasmin lysis

    A dysfibrinogenemia (fibrinogen Sevilla) was detected in a 64-yr-old woman with no previous history of hemorrhagic diathesis or thrombosis. Thrombin and reptilase times were prolonged. The aggregation of fibrin monomers showed a prolonged latency time with a defective slope although fibrinopeptide release and clot stabilization were found to be normal. Plasmin proteolysis was abnormal with a much slower plasmic degradation in patient's purified fibrinogen. By chromatofocussing the patient's fibrinogen showed an abnormality in pattern elution with a second peak eluting at a pH slightly more basic than the normal one (pH 5.5). Likewise, the isoelectrofocussing of purified non-reduced patient's fibrinogen in agarose gel showed an abnormal distribution in its focussed bands, especially in a group which focussed in a pI-interval between 5.20-5.85. By two-dimensional electrophoresis we did not find any abnormality in the fibrinogen-reduced chains. These results could indicate that the abnormal monomer aggregation, as well as the defective plasmin lysis, could be due to conformational aspects of fibrinogen rather than to structural defects
