Our group has evolved around a small accelerator-based neutron source (ABNS), the 25 million electron Volt (MeV) linear electron accelerator at the Bariloche Atomic Centre. It is dedicated to applications of neutronic methods to tackle problems of basic sciences and to technological applications. Among these, the determination of total cross section of a material as a function of neutron energy by means of transmission experiments for thermal and sub-thermal neutrons is very sensitive to the geometric arrangement and movement of the atoms, over distances ranging from the 'first-neighbour scale' up to the microstructural level or 'grain scale'. This also allowed to test theoretical models of calculated cross sections and scattering kernels. Interest has moved from pulsed neutron diffraction towards deep inelastic neutron scattering (DINS), a powerful tool for the determination of atomic momentum distribution in condensed matter and for non-destructive mass spectroscopy. In recent years non-intrusive techniques aimed at the scanning of large cargo containers have started to be developed with this ABNS, testing the capacity and limitations to detect special nuclear material and dangerous substances in thick cargo arrangements. More recently, the use of the ever-present “bremsstrahlung” radiation has been recognized as a useful complement to instrumental neutron activation, as it permits to detect other nuclear species through high-energy photon activation. The facility is also used for graduate and undergraduate students experimental work within the frame of Instituto Balseiro Physics and Nuclear Engineering courses of study, and also MSc and PhD theses work

This rsearch is framed in the thematic “Disability and Chilean labor legislation” with the purpose of incorporating the vision of the subjects in disability situation with experience and political action. The aim of this research is to analyze the political vision regarding the current Chilean labor legislation, from the subjects in disability situation belonging to the group “Palos de ciego” during 2014. A participatory methodology with qualitative focusing is used, oriented to emancipation, with ethnographic perspective. Data gathering is from participant observation, field notes, and in-depth interviews. The analysis of information is done through open coding. Results are structured from three thematic axes: political vision of the labor legislation, limitations and proposals of transformation of the Chilean labor inclusion. The central issue is related to the dominant logic, under which the state acts on a subsidiary basis, not recognizing the inherent rights of the subjects in disability situation. The group proposes strategies of transformation of political order, with incidence in global and specific aspects, standing out the importance of awareness in society regarding compression of disability as a political problem. Finally, is expressed the challenge of enlarge occupational therapy to a political scope, encouraging the professional’s participation in the processes of political struggle of the subjects in situation of disability, as well as political participation thereof

Development and Application of the Branched and Isoprenoid GDGT Machine Learning Classification Algorithm (BIGMaC) for Paleoenvironmental Reconstruction

    No full text
Glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers (GDGTs), both archaeal isoprenoid GDGTs (isoGDGTs) and bacterial branched GDGTs (brGDGTs), have been used in paleoclimate studies to reconstruct environmental conditions. Since GDGTs are produced in many types of environments, their relative abundances also depend on the depositional setting. This suggests that the distribution of GDGTs also preserves useful information that can be used more broadly to infer these depositional environments in the geological past. Here, we combined existing iso- and brGDGT relative abundance data with newly analyzed samples to generate a database of 1,153 samples from several modern sedimentary settings. We observed a robust relationship between the depositional environment and the relative abundances of GDGTs in our samples. This data set was used to train and test the Branched and isoGDGT Machine learning Classification (BIGMaC) algorithm, which identifies the environment a sample comes from based on the distribution of GDGTs with high precision and recall (F1 = 0.95). We tested the model on the sedimentary record from the Giraffe kimberlite pipe, an Eocene maar in subantarctic Canada, and found that the BIGMaC reconstruction agrees with independent stratigraphic and palynological information, provides new information about the paleoenvironment of this site, and helps improve its paleotemperature reconstruction. In contrast, we also include an example from the PETM-aged Cobham lignite as a cautionary example that illustrates the limitations of the algorithm. We propose that in cases where paleoenvironments are unknown or are changing, BIGMaC can be applied in concert with other proxies to generate more refined paleoclimate records
