Acute military psychiatric casualties from the war in Iraq
Background: The view that most military personnel evacuated from war zones are suffering from combat stress reactions, or are otherwise traumatised by the horrors of war, has an impact on all aspects of military psychiatry.
Aims: To delineate the reasons for psychiatric aeromedical evacuation from Iraq from the start of build-up of UK forces in January 2003 until the end of October that year, 6 months after the end of formal hostilities.
Method: A retrospective study was conducted of field and in-patient psychiatric assessments of 116 military personnel evacuated to the UK military psychiatric in-patient facility in Catterick Garrison.
Results: Evacuees were mainly non-combatants (69%). A significant proportion were in reserve service (21%) and had a history of contact with mental health services (37%). Only 3% had a combat stress reaction. In over 85% of cases evacuation was for low mood attributed to separation from friends or family, or difficulties adjusting to the environment.
Conclusions: These findings have implications especially for screening for suitability for deployment, and for understanding any longer-term mental health problems arising in veterans from Iraq

Spectrophotometric analysis of ternary uranyl systems to replace tri-N-butyl phosphate (TBP) in used fuel reprocessing
In this report, the interaction of monoamide/diamide and monoamide/diglycolamide mixtures with UO2+2 are investigated in pH = 1 methanolic nitric acid media. These monoamides include N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMAA), N,N-diethylacetamide (DEAA), N,N-dibutylacetamide (DBAA) and N,N-dibutylbutanamide (DBBA). N,N,Nâ˛Nâ˛-tetraethylmalonamide (TEMA) and N,N,Nâ˛,Nâ˛-tetraethyldiglycolamide (TEDGA), which were chosen as model diamides and diglycolamides, respectively. Complex stability constants for each ligand were modelled using the Stability Quotients Using Absorbance Data program using UVâvisible data. Complex stoichiometry of ligand mixtures was determined using Job plots and UVâVis spectrometry. Monoamides were confirmed to produce only disolvate complexes with UO2+2 in solution. The log10(K) values for monoamides were found to be independent of amine-side chain length, but were slightly dependent on the carbonyl-side chain length. TEDGA was found to produce multiple uranyl complexes in solution. Job plot data indicated that the uranyl cation strongly prefers to bond either only with the monoamide or diamide in ternary monoamideâdiamideâUO2 systems. MonoamideâdiglycolamideâUO2 systems were more complicated, with Job plot data indicating the potential for multiple ternary species being present is dependent on the monoamide structure

Decadal predictability of regional scale wind speed and wind energy potentials over Central Europe
Decadal predictions on timescales from one year to one decade are gaining importance since this time frame falls within the planning horizon of politics, economy and society. The present study examines the decadal predictability of regional wind speed and wind energy potentials in three generations of the MiKlip (âMittelfristige Klimaprognosenâ) decadal prediction system. The system is based on the global Max-Planck-Institute Earth System Model (MPI-ESM), and the three generations differ primarily in the ocean initialisation. Ensembles of uninitialised historical and yearly initialised hindcast experiments are used to assess the forecast skill for 10 m wind speeds and wind energy output (Eout) over Central Europe with lead times from one year to one decade. With this aim, a statistical-dynamical downscaling (SDD) approach is used for the regionalisation. Its added value is evaluated by comparison of skill scores for MPI-ESM large-scale wind speeds and SDD-simulated regional wind speeds. All three MPI-ESM ensemble generations show some forecast skill for annual mean wind speed and Eout over Central Europe on yearly and multi-yearly time scales. This forecast skill is mostly limited to the first years after initialisation. Differences between the three ensemble generations are generally small. The regionalisation preserves and sometimes increases the forecast skills of the global runs but results depend on lead time and ensemble generation. Moreover, regionalisation often improves the ensemble spread. Seasonal Eout skills are generally lower than for annual means. Skill scores are lowest during summer and persist longest in autumn. A large-scale westerly weather type with strong pressure gradients over Central Europe is identified as potential source of the skill for wind energy potentials, showing a similar forecast skill and a high correlation with Eout anomalies. These results are promising towards the establishment of a decadal prediction system for wind energy applications over Central Europe

Extending Human Perception of Electromagnetic Radiation to the UV Region through Biologically Inspired Photochromic Fuzzy Logic (BIPFUL) Systems.
Photochromic Fuzzy Logic Systems have been designed that extend human visual perception into the UV region. The systems are founded on a detailed knowledge of the activation wavelengths and quantum yields of a series of thermally reversible photochromic compounds. By appropriate matching of the photochromic behaviour unique colour signatures are generated in response differing UV activation frequencies
Graph-Controlled Insertion-Deletion Systems
In this article, we consider the operations of insertion and deletion working
in a graph-controlled manner. We show that like in the case of context-free
productions, the computational power is strictly increased when using a control
graph: computational completeness can be obtained by systems with insertion or
deletion rules involving at most two symbols in a contextual or in a

Implementation of the LANS-alpha turbulence model in a primitive equation ocean model
This paper presents the first numerical implementation and tests of the
Lagrangian-averaged Navier-Stokes-alpha (LANS-alpha) turbulence model in a
primitive equation ocean model. The ocean model in which we work is the Los
Alamos Parallel Ocean Program (POP); we refer to POP and our implementation of
LANS-alpha as POP-alpha. Two versions of POP-alpha are presented: the full
POP-alpha algorithm is derived from the LANS-alpha primitive equations, but
requires a nested iteration that makes it too slow for practical simulations; a
reduced POP-alpha algorithm is proposed, which lacks the nested iteration and
is two to three times faster than the full algorithm. The reduced algorithm
does not follow from a formal derivation of the LANS-alpha model equations.
Despite this, simulations of the reduced algorithm are nearly identical to the
full algorithm, as judged by globally averaged temperature and kinetic energy,
and snapshots of temperature and velocity fields. Both POP-alpha algorithms can
run stably with longer timesteps than standard POP.
Comparison of implementations of full and reduced POP-alpha algorithms are
made within an idealized test problem that captures some aspects of the
Antarctic Circumpolar Current, a problem in which baroclinic instability is
prominent. Both POP-alpha algorithms produce statistics that resemble
higher-resolution simulations of standard POP.
A linear stability analysis shows that both the full and reduced POP-alpha
algorithms benefit from the way the LANS-alpha equations take into account the
effects of the small scales on the large. Both algorithms (1) are stable; (2)
make the Rossby Radius effectively larger; and (3) slow down Rossby and gravity

Observed multivariable signals of late 20th and early 21st century volcanic activity
The relatively muted warming of the surface and lower troposphere since 1998 has attracted considerable attention. One contributory factor to this âwarming hiatusâ is an increase in volcanically induced cooling over the early 21st century. Here we identify the signals of late 20th and early 21st century volcanic activity in multiple observed climate variables. Volcanic signals are statistically discernible in spatial averages of tropical and near-global SST, tropospheric temperature, net clear-sky short-wave radiation, and atmospheric water vapor. Signals of late 20th and early 21st century volcanic eruptions are also detectable in near-global averages of rainfall. In tropical average rainfall, however, only a Pinatubo-caused drying signal is identifiable. Elevated Ratio of Urinary Metabolites of Thromboxane and Prostacyclin Is Associated with Adverse Cardiovascular Events in ADAPT
Results from prevention trials, including the Alzheimer's Disease Anti-inflammatory Prevention Trial (ADAPT), have fueled discussion about the cardiovascular (CV) risks associated with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). We tested the hypotheses that (i) adverse CV events reported among ADAPT participants (aged 70 years and older) are associated with increased ratio of urine 11-dehydrothromboxane B2 (Tx-M) to 2â˛3-donorâ6-keto-PGF1 (PGI-M) attributable to NSAID treatments; (ii) coincident use of aspirin (ASA) would attenuate NSAID-induced changes in Tx-M/PGI-M ratio; and (iii) use of NSAIDs and/or ASA would not alter urine or plasma concentrations of F2-isoprostanes (IsoPs), in vivo biomarkers of free radical damage. We quantified urine Tx-M and PGI-M, and urine and plasma F2-IsoPs from 315 ADAPT participants using stable isotope dilution assays with gas chromatography/mass spectrometry, and analyzed these data by randomized drug assignment and self-report compliance as well as ASA use. Adverse CV events were significantly associated with higher urine Tx-M/PGI-M ratio, which seemed to derive mainly from lowered PGI-M. Participants taking ASA alone had reduced urine Tx-M/PGI-M compared to no ASA or NSAID; however, participants taking NSAIDs plus ASA did not have reduced urine Tx-M/PGI-M ratio compared to NSAIDs alone. Neither NSAID nor ASA use altered plasma or urine F2-IsoPs. These data suggest a possible mechanism for the increased risk of CV events reported in ADAPT participants assigned to NSAIDs, and suggest that the changes in the Tx-M/PGI-M ratio was not substantively mitigated by coincident use of ASA in individuals 70 years or older
