Diffusion Tensor Imaging in a Large Longitudinal Series of Patients With Cervical Spondylotic Myelopathy Correlated With Long-Term Functional Outcome
BACKGROUND
Fractional anisotropy (FA) of the high cervical cord correlates with upper limb function in acute cervical cord injury. We investigated the correlation between preoperative FA at the level of maximal compression and functional recovery in a group of patients after decompressive surgery for cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM).
OBJECTIVE
To determine the usefulness of FA as a biomarker for severity of CSM and as a prognostic biomarker for improvement after surgery.
METHODS
Patients received diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) scans preoperatively. FA values of the whole cord cross-section at the level of maximal compression and upper cervical cord (C1-2) were calculated. Functional status was measured using the modified Japanese Orthopedic Association (mJOA) scale preoperatively and at follow-up up to 2 yr. Regression analysis between FA and mJOA was performed. DTI at C4-7 was obtained in controls.
RESULTS
Forty-four CSM patients enrolled prior to decompression were compared with 24 controls. FA at the level of maximal compression correlated positively with preoperative mJOA score. Preoperative FA correlated inversely with recovery throughout the postoperative period. This was statistically significant at 12 mo postoperation and nearly so at 6 and 24 mo. Patients with preoperative FA0.55.
CONCLUSION
In the largest longitudinal study of this kind, FA promises a valid biomarker for severity of CSM and postoperative improvement. FA is an objective measure of function and could provide a basis for prognosis. FA is particularly useful if preoperative values are less than 0.55
Evaluation of Satellite Retrievals of Chlorophyll-a in the Arabian Gulf
The Arabian Gulf is a highly turbid, shallow sedimentary basin whose coastal areas have been classified as optically complex Case II waters (where ocean colour sensors have been proved to be unreliable). Yet, there is no such study assessing the performance and quality of satellite ocean-colour datasets in relation to ground truth data in the Gulf. Here, using a unique set of in situ Chlorophyll-a measurements (Chl-a; an index of phytoplankton biomass), collected from 24 locations in four transects in the central Gulf over six recent research cruises (2015–2016), we evaluated the performance of VIIRS and other merged satellite datasets, for the first time in the region. A highly significant relationship was found (r = 0.795, p < 0.001), though a clear overestimation in satellite-derived Chl-a concentrations is evident. Regardless of this constant overestimation, the remotely sensed Chl-a observations illustrated adequately the seasonal cycles. Due to the optically complex environment, the first optical depth was calculated to be on average 6–10 m depth, and thus the satellite signal is not capturing the deep chlorophyll maximum (DCM at ~25 m). Overall, the ocean colour sensors’ performance was comparable to other Case II waters in other regions, supporting the use of satellite ocean colour in the Gulf. Yet, the development of a regional-tuned algorithm is needed to account for the unique environmental conditions of the Gulf, and ultimately provide a better estimation of surface Chl-a in the region
The role of tool geometry in process damped milling
The complex interaction between machining structural systems and the cutting process results in machining instability, so called chatter. In some milling scenarios, process damping is a useful phenomenon that can be exploited to mitigate chatter and hence improve productivity. In the present study, experiments are performed to evaluate the performance of process damped milling considering different tool geometries (edge radius, rake and relief angles and variable helix/pitch). The results clearly indicate that variable helix/pitch angles most significantly increase process damping performance. Additionally, increased cutting edge radius moderately improves process damping performance, while rake and relief angles have a smaller and closely coupled effect

Soft contact lens extended wear affects corneal epithelial permeability: hypoxic or mechanical etiology?
Contact lens extended wear increases the permeability of epithelium to sodium fluorescein (P(dc)). The exact mechanism is not known. However, changes in P(dc) likely result from either corneal hypoxia or mechanical trauma, or both. We explored the effects of one-night continuous wear with either high- or low-Dk/t soft lenses on P(dc). The results show that corneal epithelial barrier function decreases significantly with both lens groups. We also observed that Asian eyes had higher P(dc) after overnight wear compared to non-Asian and that for both Asian and non-Asian eyes, the elimination of corneal hypoxia did not prevent changes in epithelial permeability
Characterization of growth and metabolism of the haloalkaliphile Natronomonas pharaonis
Natronomonas pharaonis is an archaeon adapted to two extreme conditions: high salt concentration and alkaline pH. It has become one of the model organisms for the study of extremophilic life. Here, we present a genome-scale, manually curated metabolic reconstruction for the microorganism. The reconstruction itself represents a knowledge base of the haloalkaliphile's metabolism and, as such, would greatly assist further investigations on archaeal pathways. In addition, we experimentally determined several parameters relevant to growth, including a characterization of the biomass composition and a quantification of carbon and oxygen consumption. Using the metabolic reconstruction and the experimental data, we formulated a constraints-based model which we used to analyze the behavior of the archaeon when grown on a single carbon source. Results of the analysis include the finding that Natronomonas pharaonis, when grown aerobically on acetate, uses a carbon to oxygen consumption ratio that is theoretically near-optimal with respect to growth and energy production. This supports the hypothesis that, under simple conditions, the microorganism optimizes its metabolism with respect to the two objectives. We also found that the archaeon has a very low carbon efficiency of only about 35%. This inefficiency is probably due to a very low P/O ratio as well as to the other difficulties posed by its extreme environment

Resumo: As pragas exóticas do eucalipto o psilideo-de-concha Glycaspis brimblecombei (Hemiptera: Psyllidae), o percevejo bronzeado Thaumastocoris peregrinus (Hemiptera: Thaumastocoridae) e a vespa-de-galha Leptocybe invasa (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae), tem comprometido o desenvolvimento de espécies e clones de eucalipto no Brasil, Sistemas de monitoramento, baseado no uso de armadilhas adesivas tem sido utilizados. As principais estratégias de manejo dessas pragas são baseadas em controle biológico clássico, com importação e liberação de inimigos naturais, e avaliação de material genético de eucalipto resistente. Summary: The exotic pests of eucalyptus redgum lerp psyllid Glycaspis brimblecombei (Hemiptera: Psyllidae), the bronze bug Thaumastocoris peregrinus (Hemiptera: Thaumastocoridae) and gall wasp Leptocybe invasiva (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae), has compromised the development of Eucalyptus species and clones in Brazil. Monitoring systems, based on the use of sticky traps have been used. The main management strategies for these pests are based on classical biological control, with import and release of natural enemies, and evaluation of resistant genetic material to the exotic pests

Symbolic analysis of analog circuits containing voltage mirrors

However, both the VM and CM have not equivalents to perform automatic symbolic circuit analysis. In this manner, we introduce nullor-equivalents for these pathological elements allowing to include parasitics and to perform only symbolic nodal analysis. The nullor-equivalent of the CM is extended to provide multiple-outpus (MO-CM). Scalloped channels enhance tear mixing under hydrogel contact lenses.
PurposeTear exchange under a soft contact lens is directly related to the amount of lateral and transverse lens motion. Hydrodynamic modeling suggests that channels placed on the back surface of a soft lens will reduce fluid resistance and increase transverse lens movement. This study measured the effect of posterior lens surface scalloped channels on tear exchange.MethodsTear exchange in the postlens tear film (PoLTF) was estimated using a fluorometer to measure the exponential depletion of high-MW fluorescein under the lens expressed as the time to deplete 95% of dye (T95). A total of 32 subjects wore two pairs of identical lenses except that the experimental lens had 12 scalloped channels placed radially in the midperiphery of the posterior lens surface, whereas lenses without channels served as controls.ResultsThe mean +/- standard error T95 values for the channel lenses was 28 +/- 2 minutes compared with 32 +/- 2 minutes for the control lenses (p = 0.107). There was a marginally significant difference in T95 between two lens groups in Asian eyes (p = 0.054).ConclusionPlacing scallop-shaped channels on high-H2O content soft lenses improved the postlens tear pumping in Asian eyes
