    FPGA embedded multichannel analyzer

    An multichannel analyzer has been designed, and its performance has been evaluated. The multichannel analyzer is embedded into a Field programmable gate array. The design incudes the virtual instrument in order to hand and to visualize the pulse height spectrum. Two commercially available multichannel analyzers using a NaI(Tl) and HPGe detectors were used to obtain the pulse height spectra of 137Cs, 60Co and 152Eu sources and were compared with the pulse height spectra obtained with the embedded multichannel analyzer, being alike the spectra obtained with the commercial multichannel analyzer.     DALI Bridge FPGA-Based Implementation in a Wireless Sensor Node for IoT Street Lighting Applications

    Smart lighting systems based on the Digital Addressable Lighting Interface (DALI) protocol are the most suitable for street lighting systems, allowing digital lighting control operations. Unfortunately, the microcontrollers, which are commonly used in the Wireless Sensor Network nodes to control the lamps, do not implement this protocol. The DALI protocol implemented by software in the microcontroller consumes hardware resources (timers), processing time and requires a precise temporal analysis of the application, due to the strict bit times and the Manchester coding that it uses. In this work, the design of a bridge is proposed to free the microcontroller from the implementation of the DALI protocol. The novelty of this work is the implementation of the DALI Bridge in a low-cost Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) with low power consumption. The bridge has been described in the hardware description language following the 1076-93 and 1076.3-97 standards, to guarantee its portability. The results of the synthesis show that a minimum amount of logical and routing resources is used, that the power consumption is in the order of tens of mW, that it has a very small latency time and that it supports a high operating frequency, which allows adding new functions. Its operation is verified by implementing a wireless sensor node using an FPGA of the Lattice Semiconductor iCE40 family

    Analyzing Typical Mobile Gestures in mHealth Applications for Users with Down Syndrome

    Mobile technology has provided many advantages for all members of the Information Society. Communication, Organization, Transportation, Health, and Entertainment are just a few areas of mobile technology application. Nevertheless, there are still some people who find difficulties using it. Although there are a lot of applications of mHealth available for almost any kind of mobile device, there is still a lack of understanding and attending users’ needs, especially those of users with disabilities. People with Down syndrome have the potential to function as active members of our society, taking care of themselves and their own, having jobs, voting, and so on, but their physical limitations prevent them from handling correctly technological tools that could enhance their performance, including mobile technology. In this paper, we had analyzed how suitable the mHealth applications are for users with Down syndrome. We tested 24 users and analyzed their physical performance in fine-motor movements while developing a set of tasks over a mHealth application. Results showed that the design of a mHealth application for users with Down syndrome must center its interaction with simple gestures as tap and swipe avoiding more complex ones as spread and rotate. This research is a starting point to understand the fundamentals of people with Down syndrome interacting with mobile technology

    El V Congreso Internacional de Ciencia, Tecnología e Innovación para la Sociedad, CITIS 2019, realizado del 6 al 8 de febrero de 2019 y organizado por la Universidad Politécnica Salesiana, ofreció a la comunidad académica nacional e internacional una plataforma de comunicación unificada, dirigida a cubrir los problemas teóricos y prácticos de mayor impacto en la sociedad moderna desde la ingeniería. En esta edición, dedicada a los 25 años de vida de la UPS, los ejes temáticos estuvieron relacionados con la aplicación de la ciencia, el desarrollo tecnológico y la innovación en cinco pilares fundamentales de nuestra sociedad: la industria, la movilidad, la sostenibilidad ambiental, la información y las telecomunicaciones. El comité científico estuvo conformado formado por 48 investigadores procedentes de diez países: España, Reino Unido, Italia, Bélgica, México, Venezuela, Colombia, Brasil, Estados Unidos y Ecuador. Fueron recibidas un centenar de contribuciones, de las cuales 39 fueron aprobadas en forma de ponencias y 15 en formato poster. Estas contribuciones fueron presentadas de forma oral ante toda la comunidad académica que se dio cita en el Congreso, quienes desde el aula magna, el auditorio y la sala de usos múltiples de la Universidad Politécnica Salesiana, cumplieron respetuosamente la responsabilidad de representar a toda la sociedad en la revisión, aceptación y validación del conocimiento nuevo que fue presentado en cada exposición por los investigadores. Paralelo a las sesiones técnicas, el Congreso contó con espacios de presentación de posters científicos y cinco workshops en temáticas de vanguardia que cautivaron la atención de nuestros docentes y estudiantes. También en el marco del evento se impartieron un total de ocho conferencias magistrales en temas tan actuales como la gestión del conocimiento en la universidad-ecosistema, los retos y oportunidades de la industria 4.0, los avances de la investigación básica y aplicada en mecatrónica para el estudio de robots de nueva generación, la optimización en ingeniería con técnicas multi-objetivo, el desarrollo de las redes avanzadas en Latinoamérica y los mundos, la contaminación del aire debido al tránsito vehicular, el radón y los riesgos que representa este gas radiactivo para la salud humana, entre otros

    Evidence of spatial clustering of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia cases in Greater Mexico City: report from the Mexican Inter-Institutional Group for the identification of the causes of childhood leukemia

    BackgroundA heterogeneous geographic distribution of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) cases has been described, possibly, related to the presence of different environmental factors. The aim of the present study was to explore the geographical distribution of childhood ALL cases in Greater Mexico City (GMC).MethodsA population-based case-control study was conducted. Children <18 years old, newly diagnosed with ALL and residents of GMC were included. Controls were patients without leukemia recruited from second-level public hospitals, frequency-matched by sex, age, and health institution with the cases. The residence address where the patients lived during the last year before diagnosis (cases) or the interview (controls) was used for geolocation. Kulldorff’s spatial scan statistic was used to detect spatial clusters (SCs). Relative risks (RR), associated p-value and number of cases included for each cluster were obtained.ResultsA total of 1054 cases with ALL were analyzed. Of these, 408 (38.7%) were distributed across eight SCs detected. A relative risk of 1.61 (p<0.0001) was observed for the main cluster. Similar results were noted for the remaining seven ones. Additionally, a proximity between SCs, electrical installations and petrochemical facilities was observed.ConclusionsThe identification of SCs in certain regions of GMC suggest the possible role of environmental factors in the etiology of childhood ALL

    Clock Synchronization for Multihop Wireless Sensor Networks

    118 p.Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2009.In wireless sensor networks, more so generally than in other types of distributed systems, clock synchronization is crucial since by having this service available, several applications such as media access protocols, object tracking, or data fusion, would improve their performance. In this dissertation, we propose a set of algorithms to achieve accurate time synchronization in large multihop wireless networks.First, we present a fully distributed and asynchronous algorithm that has been designed to exploit the large number of global constraints that have to be satisfied by a common notion of time in a multihop network. For example, the sum of the clock offsets along any cycle in the network must be zero at any instant. This leads to the concept of "spatial smoothing." By imposing the large number of global constraints for all the cycles in the multihop network, these time estimates can be smoothed and made more accurate.The algorithm functions by simple asynchronous broadcasts at each node. Changing the time reference node for synchronization is also easy, consisting simply of one node switching on adaptation, and another switching it off. It has been implemented on a Berkeley motes testbed of forty nodes, and comparative evaluation against a leading algorithm is presented.Next, considering that most of the clock synchronization protocols that have been developed do not provide means to detect security attacks which could render them useless, we present a secure network-wide clock synchronization protocol. At the same time, this protocol allows the nodes to securely discover the network's topology by detecting and isolating all links that have fallen under the control of attackers.     Las tareas asignadas a los estudiantes de educación primaria son generalmente desconocidas por los padres de familia, y es por ello que permitir a un docente de una institución primaria generar avisos de tareas para los padres de familia, con el objetivo de mejorar el proceso de la comunicación de tareas entre el docente y los padres de familia, es de vital importancia. La elaboración de un prototipo de aplicación web que permita a un profesor anunciar/notificar a padres de familia sobre las tareas o avisos de los estudiantes, se logró completar considerando los atributos de calidad como: usabilidad, rendimiento y confiabilidad; brindando así a los docentes y padres de familia una alternativa electrónica enteramente desarrollada para difundir la información dentro de las escuelas primarias. Con el uso de la aplicación web “Alerta a los padres” en la escuela primaria Prof. María Soledad Fernández Bañuelos de la ciudad de Zacatecas, se redujo 9% el incumplimiento de tareas en el último bloque del ciclo escolar. Ahora los padres de familia puedan tener un mejor conocimiento de las tareas y con esa información motivar o ayudar a los estudiantes en la realización de tareas escolares y mejorar el desempeño escolar

    La leche materna es el alimento que provee al niño desde su nacimiento de todos los nutrientes que necesita para su crecimiento y desarrollo físico y psicológico. Su efecto sobre el tejido dental ha sido objeto de controversias, ya que se ha visto que actúa sobre la mineralización del esmalte y se ha asociado a caries de la infancia temprana. La leche humana tiene diversos componentes protectores para el esmalte dental pero al mismo tiempo contiene factores que pueden generar la pérdida de minerales. El propósito de esta revisión es exponer los elementos que producen la desmineralización y la remineralización del esmalte y proponer algunas medidas que apoyen la integridad de este tejido, así como recomendar la lactancia materna como la alimentación principal que el infante debe recibir durante el primer año de vida. La leche humana tiene diversas proteínas y elementos que ayudan en el proceso de desmineralización y remineralización del esmalte dental de la primera dentición. Se puede concluir que, la leche materna es el alimento ideal para los niños en los primeros años de vida. Por lo que hay que promover la lactancia materna como el método preferido para alimentar a los bebés. Se debe implementar la higiene desde que el primer diente erupciona en boca. Esta medida evitará que el posible efecto desmineralizante de la leche ejerza un efecto irreversible sobre el esmalte dental. Es conveniente orientar a las madres sobre el almacenamiento de la leche materna de tal manera que al ser consumida por el niño, no se encuentre acidificada, y no produzca un efecto dañino sobre el esmalte
