National Television in Putin's Russia - The Media's Changing Role in Society and the Consolidation of Competitive Authoritarianism

Over the course of Putin's two terms as president, national television, the most important form of media for the Russian population, fell increasingly under the control of the state and many independent channels were dismantled. Employing the 2000 and 2008 presidential elections as case studies, this thesis looks at the decline of media independence in Russia since the 1990s and considers the changing role of the mass media in Russian society and politics. In the late 1990s national television served as a means for competing oligarchs to propagate their views and political aspirations to the public. However, by 2008, pro-Kremlin coverage had become the dominant voice on national television. This is a reflection of wider trends of the time. Putin transformed the weak government that lacked sufficient coercive and organisational capacity to respond to elite challenges into a competitive authoritarian regime, where elections remain competitive, but the media and other crucial resources are biased in favour of the incumbent candidate

This section presents exchanges between intellectuals from Eastern and Western Europe, Russia, and North America who kindly agreed to read and comment on Martin Mueller’s article “In Search of the Global East”, relying on the situation in their own academic disciplines, work experiences, and the twists and turns of their scientific research and creative challenges. Researchers, academic teachers, exhibition curators, writers, and architects reflect on the power and influence which geographical names exert on academic life, politics, and culture. Starting from Mueller’s article on the Global East, as well as his other text wherein he expresses his skepticism of the concept of post-socialism, the commentators, evaluating Mueller’s arguments critically, raise a number of fundamental questions. Among these questions is the need to historicize scientific concepts, the issue of the regularly-reproducible misunderstanding (or even exclusion) of the East by Western intellectuals, the tasks the inclusion of the Global East in the overall geographical picture will contribute to, as well as the question of whether the concern that the Global East is not sufficiently heard in the world is narrowly academic. This indirect debate between the author of the key text in this thematic issue and his commentators is significant as an episode of the joint search for a more democratic, creative, and inspiring future for the region that unites Eastern Europe, Russia, and Central Asia. © 2020, RUSSIAN SOCIOLOGICAL REVIEW. Ką jie man duoda? Kodėl jais galiu pasakyti praktiškai viską, kas man aktualu šiame gyvenimo etape. There is a moment in almost every creator‘s life when he wants to understand himself, figure out the internal processes and answer the questions related to emotions and feelings change. Some people are looking for the answers in older age, other start to care about that already in the beginning of their creative career. Personally, I faced the problem of self-perception quite recently. The key questions, like why I am different every day, why I feel exactly that way today, why my emotional state is unstable, encouraged the interest to myself, my internal state and to what has been long accumulating and happening today in it. An important need for the internal dialogue and aspiration for the understanding of my personal connection to the painting has appeared. During the creative process I began to observe what was the relationship of the emotions to the color and form. I began to look for the answers: why my works are dominated by circles, what they give me, why they help me to express virtually everything what is actual to me at the current stage of life. Observation of the environment and the wish to discover something new for myself developed the skill of quick visual matching of three colors, which now significantly helps to solve color problems and facilitates the color combinations. Color emotional value and it‘s relation to circle became the purpose of my creative work. Various artist of their time were solving various problems with the help of circles, but every one did that in his own way, according to his needs, aspirations and desires. This is also my creative principle: „My works can say about what I am today“.Švietimo akademijaVytauto Didžiojo universiteta
