Low temperature terahertz spectroscopy of n-InSb through a magnetic field driven metal-insulator transition
We use fiber-coupled photoconductive emitters and detectors to perform
terahertz (THz) spectroscopy of lightly-doped n-InSb directly in the cryogenic
(1.5 K) bore of a high-field superconducting magnet. We measure transmission
spectra from 0.1-1.1 THz as the sample is driven through a metal-insulator
transition (MIT) by applied magnetic field. In the low-field metallic state,
the data directly reveal the plasma edge and magneto-plasmon modes. With
increasing field, a surprisingly broad band (0.3-0.8 THz) of low transmission
appears at the onset of the MIT. This band subsequently collapses and evolves
into the sharp 1s -> 2p- transition of electrons `frozen' onto isolated donors

A technology assessment of alternative communications systems for the space exploration initiative
Telecommunications, Navigation, and Information Management (TNIM) services are vital to accomplish the ambitious goals of the Space Exploration Initiative (SEI). A technology assessment is provided for four alternative lunar and Mars operational TNIM systems based on detailed communications link analyses. The four alternative systems range from a minimum to a fully enhanced capability and use frequencies from S-band, through Ka-band, and up to optical wavelengths. Included are technology development schedules as they relate to present SEI mission architecture time frames
Significance of low energy impact damage on modal parameters of composite beams by design of experiments
This paper presents an experimental study on the effects of multi-site damage on the vibration response of composite beams damaged by low energy impacts around the barely visible impact damage limit (BVID). The variation of the modal parameters with different levels of impact energy and density of damage is studied. Vibration tests have been carried out with both burst random and classical sine dwell excitations in order to compare that which of the methods among Polymax and Half Bandwidth Method is more suitable for damping estimation in the presence of damage. Design of experiments (DOE) performed on the experimental data show that natural frequency is a more sensitive parameter for damage detection than the damping ratio. It also highlighted energy of impact as the factor having a more significant effect on the modal parameters. Half Bandwidth Method is found to be unsuitable for damping estimation in the presence of damage
Critical Currents of Josephson-Coupled Wire Arrays
We calculate the current-voltage characteristics and critical current
I_c^{array} of an array of Josephson-coupled superconducting wires. The array
has two layers, each consisting of a set of parallel wires, arranged at right
angles, such that an overdamped resistively-shunted junction forms wherever two
wires cross. A uniform magnetic field equal to f flux quanta per plaquette is
applied perpendicular to the layers. If f = p/q, where p and q are mutually
prime integers, I_c^{array}(f) is found to have sharp peaks when q is a small
integer. To an excellent approximation, it is found in a square array of n^2
plaquettes, that I_c^{array}(f) \propto (n/q)^{1/2} for sufficiently large n.
This result is interpreted in terms of the commensurability between the array
and the assumed q \times q unit cell of the ground state vortex lattice.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
UV properties of early-type galaxies in the Virgo cluster
We study the UV properties of a volume limited sample of early-type galaxies
in the Virgo cluster combining new GALEX far- (1530 A) and near-ultraviolet
(2310 A) data with spectro-photometric data available at other wavelengths. The
sample includes 264 ellipticals, lenticulars and dwarfs spanning a large range
in luminosity (M(B)<-15). While the NUV to optical or near-IR color magnitude
relations (CMR) are similar to those observed at optical wavelengths, with a
monotonic reddening of the color index with increasing luminosity, the (FUV-V)
and (FUV-H) CMRs show a discontinuity between massive and dwarf objects. An
even more pronounced dichotomy is observed in the (FUV-NUV) CMR. For
ellipticals the (FUV-NUV) color becomes bluer with increasing luminosity and
with increasing reddening of the optical or near-IR color indices. For the
dwarfs the opposite trend is observed. These observational evidences are
consistent with the idea that the UV emission is dominated by hot, evolved
stars in giant systems, while in dwarf ellipticals residual star formation

On the helium content of Galactic globular clusters via the R parameter
We estimate the empirical R parameter in 26 Galactic Globular Clusters
covering a wide metallicity range, imaged by WFPC2 on board the HST. The
improved spatial resolution permits a large fraction of the evolved stars to be
measured and permits accurate assessment of radial populaton gradients and
completeness corrections. In order to evaluate both the He abundance and the He
to metal enrichment ratio, we construct a large set of evolutionary models by
adopting similar metallicities and different He contents. We find an absolute
He abundance which is lower than that estimated from spectroscopic measurements
in HII regions and from primordial nucleosynthesis models. This discrepancy
could be removed by adopting a C12O16 nuclear cross section about a factor of
two smaller than the canonical value, although also different assumptions for
mixing processes can introduce systematical effects. The trend in the R
parameter toward solar metallicity is consistent with an upper limit to the He
to metal enrichment ratio of the order of 2.5.Comment: accepted for pubblication on Ap
Multiple Stellar Populations in the Globular Cluster omega Centauri as Tracers of a Merger Event
The discovery of the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy, which is being tidally
disrupted by and merging with the Milky Way, supports the view that the halo of
the Galaxy has been built up at least partially by the accretion of similar
dwarf systems. The Sagittarius dwarf contains several distinct populations of
stars, and includes M54 as its nucleus, which is the second most massive
globular cluster associated with the Milky Way. The most massive globular
cluster is omega Centauri, and here we report that omega Centauri also has
several distinct stellar populations, as traced by red-giant-branch stars. The
most metal-rich red-giant-branch stars are about 2 Gyr younger than the
dominant metal-poor component, indicating that omega Centauri was enriched over
this timescale. The presence of more than one epoch of star formation in a
globular cluster is quite surprising, and suggests that omega Centauri was once
part of a more massive system that merged with the Milky Way, as the
Sagittarius dwarf galaxy is in the process of doing now. Mergers probably were
much more frequent in the early history of the Galaxy and omega Centauri

Enhanced Supersymmetry of Nonrelativistic ABJM Theory
We study the supersymmetry enhancement of nonrelativistic limits of the ABJM
theory for Chern-Simons level . The special attention is paid to the
nonrelativistic limit (known as `PAAP' case) containing both particles and
antiparticles. Using supersymmetry transformations generated by the monopole
operators, we find additional 2 kinematical, 2 dynamical, and 2 conformal
supercharges for this case. Combining with the original 8 kinematical
supercharges, the total number of supercharges becomes maximal: 14
supercharges, like in the well-known PPPP limit. We obtain the corresponding
super Schr\"odinger algebra which appears to be isomorphic to the one of the
PPPP case. We also discuss the role of monopole operators in supersymmetry
enhancement and partial breaking of supersymmetry in nonrelativistic limit of

The nuclear immune receptor RPS4 is required for RRS1SLH1-dependent constitutive defense activation in Arabidopsis thaliana
Plant nucleotide-binding leucine-rich repeat (NB-LRR) disease resistance (R) proteins recognize specific ‘‘avirulent’’ pathogen effectors and activate immune responses. NB-LRR proteins structurally and functionally resemble mammalian Nod-like receptors (NLRs). How NB-LRR and NLR proteins activate defense is poorly understood. The divergently transcribed Arabidopsis R genes, RPS4 (resistance to Pseudomonas syringae 4) and RRS1 (resistance to Ralstonia solanacearum 1), function together to confer recognition of Pseudomonas AvrRps4 and Ralstonia PopP2. RRS1 is the only known recessive NBLRR R gene and encodes a WRKY DNA binding domain, prompting suggestions that it acts downstream of RPS4 for transcriptional activation of defense genes. We define here the early RRS1-dependent transcriptional changes upon delivery of PopP2 via Pseudomonas type III secretion. The Arabidopsis slh1 (sensitive to low humidity 1) mutant encodes an RRS1 allele (RRS1SLH1) with a single amino acid (leucine) insertion in the WRKY DNA-binding domain. Its poor growth due to constitutive defense activation is rescued at higher temperature. Transcription profiling data indicate that RRS1SLH1-mediated defense activation overlaps substantially with AvrRps4- and PopP2-regulated responses. To better understand the genetic basis of RPS4/RRS1-dependent immunity, we performed a genetic screen to identify suppressor of slh1 immunity (sushi) mutants. We show that many sushi mutants carry mutations in RPS4, suggesting that RPS4 acts downstream or in a complex with RRS1. Interestingly, several mutations were identified in a domain C-terminal to the RPS4 LRR domain. Using an Agrobacterium-mediated transient assay system, we demonstrate that the P-loop motif of RPS4 but not of RRS1SLH1 is required for RRS1SLH1 function. We also recapitulate the dominant suppression of RRS1SLH1 defense activation by wild type RRS1 and show this suppression requires an intact RRS1 P-loop. These analyses of RRS1SLH1 shed new light on mechanisms by which NB-LRR protein pairs activate defense signaling, or are held inactive in the absence of a pathogen effector
